Reading through these posts, there are some very "educated" film fans here. It gives me hope that there is still a future for good film-making.
While agreeing that there is no "best," here are a few of my favorites (some of which, to my delight, have already been mentioned):
"The Mission"
"Brazil"
"Citizen Kane" (it is amazing how well this movie has aged - still so pertinent)
"12 Monkeys" (Yes, I know...Gilliam again!)
"Ordinary People"
"Six Degrees Separation"
"The Right Stuff"
"The Sting"
"Yojimbo"
"Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World"
"Changing Lanes" (Shocking...a Ben Affleck film that was not only tolerable, but great!)
"Leon" ("The Professional" in America)
"Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind" (I hesitate to put such a recent film on my "favorites" list. I usually allow more time to reflect. But I think this one is here to stay.)
"Amores Perros" (Translated "Love's a *****.")
"Three Kings" (Can't believe this film didn't get more buzz.)
And just for fun:
"Spy Game"
"Equilibrium" (Don't think Christian Bale can pull off Batman? See this film, and you'll be psyched for "Batman Begins" in 2005! Without a doubt some of the best action choreography ever done in American cinema.)
"Drive"
"Cradle Will Rock"

city of god - totally blew me away....
12 angry men - the original 50's version, amazing
akira - still beats the crap out of 99.9% of all sci fi films..
the killer - John Woo and Chow Yun Fat before they sold out..
hard boiled - see above
man bites dog - the best film to come out of Belgium - has to be seen to be believed
those and too many others to mention Ensign Mi Canio - MIL Div. - Combat Air Patrol

Best Evar(tm)? I have to go with Saving Private Ryan, if only for the first twenty or so minutes. Normandy was a few decades before my time, but from what I've heard from WW II veterans, it was a shockingly accurate portrayal of the horrors of modern warfare.
I have to put a blurb in for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, however. That certainly takes the cake for best translation of written word to a movie. I thank pantheons of deities daily that Weir didn't Peter Jacksonize it. *shudder* --- Having recently acquired a lab slot (thank you, rental bug), I wholeheartily concur, there's absolutely no problem with lab slots! |

Top 10, in no order.
1.) Full Metal Jacket 2.) Band of Brothers 3.) GunGrave (not a "movie" but it's still one of the most played DVD's at my house) 4.) Mononoke-hime 5.) Final Fantasy: The spirits within 6.) Dune 7.) Wizards (1977, by Ralph Bakshi) 8.) Pulp Fiction 9.) Basketball Diaries 10.) Requiem For A Dream
----------------sig---------------------------- Dtai'kai'-dte sa-de nau'gkon dtain'aun bpi-de.
if you don't wake up, i'll have to stop kissing you. all that flailing has made you sleepy. you rest while i untie you. stay here until they find you. My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

I watch an awful lot of films and so tend to define my personal "best" (favourites) as those that still manage to draw me into watching them when I just happen to randomly see them on television or something. That drawing power is the secret formula that I think separates "good" from truly "great". So, (in no particular order)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Sublime camerawork and great story, excellent fighting and a genuinely moving conclusion)
The Duellists (A Joseph Conrad adaption by Ridly Scott, beautiful looking tale of obsession and rivalry between the Napoleanic officers. The PA should watch this ;)
El Cid (For my money, the Charlton Heston film, epic and inspiring. The scene where he holds the new King to account for past deeds and forces him to swear on the bible is a single defining example of how to stand up to tyrants. Its impossible to watch this film and not want to lead a rebellion.
Excalibur (Believe it or not I mastered in Arthurian mythology at the university of Bangor and I love all things celtic and dark age mythological. Excalibur is John Boorman at his visual best, mingling lush forestry and glorious evocations of feudal brutality. It does go a little new-agey but you can forgive it anything for its quoteable lines and inspiring imagery and soundtrack. I also find it impossible not to shed a tear at the end with the sunrise and climax to the musical score as arthur is taken to avalon.)
Fight Club (Hell yes! This is movie about 20-30 something kids in adult bodies and actually doing something rather than wallowing in post-adolescent angst. Its clever, uncompromising, subversive and compelling, and frankly I think the director needed burning with lye for going on to make Panic Room rather than trying to top the Pixes's scored conclusion "you met me at a strange time in my life".
Usual Suspects (A top notch cast, a very good story, twists and turns and the creation of something rare in the mordern world: a genuinely scary bogeyman figure and believable myth)
Once upon a time in the West (Buy it on DVD and watch with digitally remastered 5.1 stero. It is a work of art. I love the Clint Eastward westerns but this film beats them hands down for storytelling and an incredible slow burning inevitability of revenge.)
Magnolia (Great storytelling, intermingled plots, human drama, its funny and tragic and moves along like a forced march to a great conclusion. The music is again fantastic and well worth investing in the DVD to see the film in its best state.)
Battleship Potemkin (The "daddy" of propaganda film-making. Open your mind and heart and tell me you don't feel just the slightest urge to rise up and throw off shackles of the proletariat after watching this film. It really is piece of art. Forget your political bias and just be moved by it for a little while.) Kelly's Heroes (yes I know, Saving Private Ryan and Shindlers List are much more worthy WW2 films etc, but Kelly's heroes is the one that made me go out and "play war" with my friends when I was a kid. I think because it concentrates on the soldiers, their friendships, and what they are hoping to get out of the dog days of the war when things are pretty much decided and the conflict is won. I also liked the fact that the character of the "enemy" soldiers is developed and they become people again. The Tiger Tank german is not some faceless German goon, he's a guy just like us at the end of day. Ironically its also pretty good for the depiction of the hardware. Classic film!
*** And for the "never heard of it on release but randomly saw it at the video shop and boy what a little gem it was" category.
"Revengers Tragedy" (with Eddie Izzard Christopher Eccleston and Derek Jacobi, a superb post apocalypic retelling of a Jacobean play to a glorious soundtrack by Chumbawumba. The richness of the original dialogue is spiced with amusing anachronistic moments and the tale moves along beautifully. Because the language is by turns so dense you have to think about it ... and that allows you to dwell on the motivation and actuality of revenge as a core foundation to a life.)
