Might be a stupid question, but i'm still a noob with some parts of this game.
I love probing, and Cov ops with their ability to scan down ships and exploration sites fast while cloaked seems like something I love to do. But... are cov ops any use to corporations either in pve or pvp? Are they useful in fleet pvp?

They are good scouts. First scout usually also scans out hostiles in system before the rest of the gang warps in and wtfpwns them. _________________________

Think about what you just said and ask again.
"their ability to scan down ships and exploration sites fast while cloaked"
Sounds like it's useful no?
Just keep in mind basically all 0.0 FCs do it from Cov Ops ships.

Also it is a nice stepping stope before recons and stealth bombers. Cov Op ships are limited to pretty much scouting but recon ships can scout and do some hefty damage.

Hefty damage? Indirect damage yes (web, ecm, damps etc.) but they're not primarily damage dealers. _________________________

While they are not HACs, Amarr and Gallente Force Recons can get to nice DPS numbers. Combined with the Cloak (ability to select fights) this can be powerful. There is a reason Pilgrim is considered the best solo PvP ship :P

5 good reasons to train for Covert Ops 1) The best scouts in the game (T2 frig speed even when cloaked + cloaked warping) 2) The best ships for probing, too (highest bonus for scanning among all ships) 3) The Covert Ops skill is needed to train for Recon Ships 4) Covert Ops share their skills requirement (Electronic Upgrades V) with Electronic Attack Ships. 5) They are fun to play, and not too expensive ____________________________________ Fulbert Peon |

Pretty much said above. Covops are amazing scouts, and amazing probers. The small size, high agility ,and probing bonuses make them ideal in wormhole space.

Want to explore? forget about having a home? want to scan down hacking sites for a week going through wormhole after worm hole only filling your cargo with the rare stuff you find until you get to a station to stash your spoils? want to be a real explorer? well the covert ops is for you, I spent 2 days going in and out of worm holes, just traveling, great ship for exploring the game, making cash while doing it.
covert ops are for free spirits, and ofc the above points, skill is needed for other ships, good scout, hard to die in ect
great ships

You can put pressure on paranoid bears by being that red guy in their nullsec systems local. ---

Except that the first sleeper that sees you hacking his cans in w-space will be the end of your exploration. *-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^ By the way, I am an Ishtar and T2 sentries fan. Fight to make the sentry damage rig work for all drones. |

This... why do people seem to think hacking sites are undefended?

I prefer a Stealth Bomber for this as you can actually back up that paranoia from time to time if you choose your targets right.

Cov Ops no longer necessary for exploration. Lots of ships better for the task, especially if you're looking to clear the sites by yourself.

Disagree that there are lots of ships better for the task. Solo (reasonably safe) exploration is the sole domain of the cov-ops, doesn't matter what it's exploring. However, I will agree that if you are planning on also clearing the site or area of exploration (say finding enemy ships) there are better vessels available, especially if you can't dock where you are exploring and refit.
The primary reason is that cov-ops are hard to kill. Doesn't matter what you are scanning or where, if you are decently skilled, you are extremely hard to kill. You can literally live in a cov-ops for months and gather intel or do exploration without anyone being able to harm you if you do it right, most of the time they shouldn't even be able to scan you down, it only takes a couple seconds to MWD away from a probe you might set out and then you can re-cloak, something recons take a bit longer to do and thus might be caught while doing.
Many gate camps won't even bother trying to uncloak a lone cov-ops as it's often a waste of resources knowing a whole gang might be right on it's heels.
TL;DR cov-ops are the single best intel gathering ships in the game.

experienced covops are absolutely essential for 0.0 alliance warfare. they are irreplaceable, even by recons. i'm not sure what if any role they might have in empire or strict pvp gameplay. scanning i guess. p.s. stealth bombers are almost useless post missle nerf. they were barely useful before.
