At 2:16pm on March 15th 2004, five years ago today, Eve University was founded by our CEO: Morning Maniac.
For those who don't know us, we have been described as one of the few truly altruistic corporations in New Eden. We take new players and teach teach them what is necessary to survive and be successful in Eve with scheduled lessons and events, guest lectures from external pilots, a supportive environment and a forum crammed full of information. And on top of this, we also provide ships, modules, ammo and skillbooks to our members, as well as various other initiatives.
Since that day five years ago, the University has gone from its humble beginnings as a place where some experienced players could interact directly with a handful new players, providing them the benefit of their experience, to what it is today, with thousands of instructive forum posts, weeks of recorded lessons, and hundreds of millions of ISK being spent a week on the student membership.
However, amongst all of this, one thing is clear - Eve University is not something that could exist without the support of the community and its members.
- Without the tireless work of our recruiters, we would not be able to accept new members without significant risk.
- Without the selfless members who have taken their own time to teach, we would have no lessons.
- Without the never-ending work of the logistics department, we would not be able to efficiently provide the resources to the membership.
- Without the members of the ILN, the Ivy League Navy, defence of the University would be considerably more difficult.
- Without Morning Maniac coming up with the idea and forming the corporation, may pilots in Eve would not be in the same positions they are today.
- And most of all, without the donations, support, and backing from the community at large, Eve University would be unable to continue at the level is has been doing.
What many current and ex-members are aware of is that Eve University is greater than the sum of its parts - it is not simply a corporation, an alliance, a forum, some servers, people who share their knowledge, or anything so simple. In a cut-throat universe with infinite potential for backstabbing, theft, espionage and destruction of peoples hard work, the fact that Eve University even exists can be quite surprising, but that neglects what E-UNI actually is.
The core of the University is altruism which Morning Maniac started 5 years ago and it transcends simple constructs like corporations and forums. Above all else Eve University is a concept, and you cannot wage war against such things. If somehow Eve University itself were to be disbanded tomorrow and all its assets disappeared, the concept would continue to exist, and I truly believe it will still exist until the last star in New Eden burns up the last of its fuel and goes dark.
The names and faces may have changed over the years, but Eve University is still the same concept it was those five years ago - experienced players giving back to the community and new pilots pooling their resources and learning amongst themselves. As New Eden changes, expands and evolves, Eve University will still be here, freely teaching those new players what they need to know to be a success.
So, to the community of New Eden on behalf of Eve University, its current, past and future students and staff, thank you for these last five years, and here's to another five.
Fly safe o7

Eve online was the first MMO I signed up to. I've been playing now for over a year, but without EVE Uni I wouldn't have stuck it past the trial.
New players in EVE could learn a lot by joining EVE Uni - the depth of experience provided by the instructors combined with the willingness to teach makes EVE Uni the premier learning institution of New Eden.

I've played this game for a little over a month now, and I bet I wouldn't have played over 14 days if I wasn't accepted into EUNI, given the help and lessons needed to survive, and the kindness of the instructors and fellow students to keep me playing past trial. Even after I leave EUNI I will always remember and respect the members, and hope to give back as much as the instructors have. _________________________________________ One does not simply warp through Rancer... |

I tried EVE once before, a year or so ago, and lasted about a week before I gave up. This time I found EVE Uni and I'm still going strong months later. Without them I wouldn't be having the fun I am now.
To anyone wandering whether to join I would most heartily recommend giving them a shot. Everyone is friendly, willing to listen to and answer questions (no matter how stupid), and will help you out when you get into trouble. They're (very) forgiving of honest mistakes, and keep a hanger full of basic equipment to help you get on your feet in your first few weeks of EVE. And most importantly they run classes regularly helping you get to know every aspect of life in New Eden.
EVE Uni - it's like having an army of big brothers and sisters. With guns.

I would have left EVE for sure if it had not been for the UNI. EVE has a steep learning curve and the UNI is there to help new players climb that hill. Even for random players like myself who have been in the UNI for just over a year, I am constantly learning something new. I enjoy passing on bits of knowledge and the communication in the channels is great.
Everyone needs a starting place and I can not think of better one than EVE University.

I was in week 2 of my trial when I found Eve University. I would surly have dropped the game at the end of the 2 week trial if it were not for this wonderful group of people.
Because of them, I quickly learned the basics of most everything that was available to me. I spent 4 months the UNI before I moved onto the bigger world that is this crazy and sometimes painful game. Thanks to everyone who helped me.
Happy 5th anniversary E-UNI!

Eve Uni opens up parts of Eve that new users would otherwise have no idea about. Instead of passing your first days grinding missions at your starter location wondering where else you dare go, week old Unistas get to command fleets of 100 pilots in lowsec, take part in vast mining operations, and attend practical lessons in how to get the most out of New Eden. Long live the Uni! o7 If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, You are well tanked, my son! |

It is a strange thing, the EVE University. Before I began playing EVE, the only stories you'd get out of it were the ones of betrayal. Corp thefts, bank heists, inter-alliance politics, infiltrating spies, rampaging pirates. Everything was focused on what a brutal, harsh environment New Eden was and how to get anywhere - anywhere at all - you'd have to be a bigger, nastier bastard than everyone else. It is an imposing, terrifying image of a world without trust, honour and friendship and whilst I obviously knew that these stories were not the day-to-day, bread and butter experience that EVE offered, just the possibility for such freedom both enticed and frightened me. We've all seen what the anonymity of the Internet can do to a person, giving those people a universe in which to do as they please? Madness!
I signed up anyway, of course. I'm not much of a bastard but in a world of such freedom, surely anybody can carve out a niche of their own, right? After a few days of enduring help, NPC corp and the recruitment channel, a friend of mine told me about the Uni. I'd heard about it before, ages ago on the MOG podcast, but it had slipped my mind. She didn't tell me much, just pointed me to the public channel and said, "you won't regret it". Of course, she was right. A month down the road and I've never experienced such a welcoming and giving community in an MMO before - and I've played a few of them - and one that expects nothing in return, too. In a world as harsh as EVE, a little kindness goes a long way especially when talking of those early, frustrating weeks after character creation. For what the Uni has already given me - and I don't mean in terms of components and ships, though they are appreciated - I can't possible express my gratitude.
A little melodramatic, I'll admit, but I wasn't expecting to find something like the Uni when I stepped into the game. For providing me with a real reason to fly, for imbuing my tiny T1 ships with purpose, for giving us all safe port and a warbeer when times are tough, I salute each and every member, be they teacher or student, past or present.
Excellent work everyone, five years is something to be truly proud of, make no mistake. Apologies for the long post but hey, it gives you something to read.
Suffice to say, I am extremely proud to be a member of EVE University, flying alongside some truly great pilots. Long may it continue.

If ever there was a n00b who asked 10,000 questions, it was me... However, the patience of everyone around me 13 months ago kept me in game... From the time I targeted my first billboard... to the time I led 18 pilots out on my first fleet was about a month... I STILL can't believe they followed me...
There are so many things to try, and so many ways to do it wrong, Eve Uni will at least get you pointed in the right direction - what you do with it after that...

As someone who has been drifting in and out of EVE for a few years now I can honestly say that I have never been in a more helpful and better run corp. The guys here are constantly trying new ideas and learning and are ecstatic to pass that knowledge on to anyone who will listen or read their forums. The faces may change but the attitude remains positive an cheerful, and the ones that have been teachers and directors since I started still are the same helpful tireless people today as they re when I joined so long ago.

My first character and 2 Days into my Eve trial I had heard about Eve Uni by word of mouth in the Rookie Help channel. I spent over a year with the Uni before moving on and was definitely worth my time there. Learned alot about the game after being sent off into the cold space by the old Aurora tutorial from Eve Uni and would recommend to any new pilot to join.

Long live the Uni, may many years follow.
As a new player myself (1 month) eve for me was a rather overwhelming game to start out with. Most games and mmo's have a clear cut road for you to walk on.
To see that you had so many different options in eve and that the only real limit you had was your imagination was a refreshing thing and now that I do play, I regret always having refused to play eve because I was either playing other games or to bussy with real life.
To continue on that thought that the only real limit you have is your imagination makes this game very hard to start out with compared to others. The fact that someone in the rookie help channel referred me to E-Uni is something i'm very much thankfull for.
The uni is a great learning place, you have teachers with experience in just about every aspect of the game, you have classes both recorded and live that you can listen in on/to. And should that not be enough? There are also 1on1 mentorships and a whole lot of helpfull people to awnser your questions or to explain a certain aspect of the game to you.
Personally i'm thankfull to be part of such a thing and shall always be recommending the uni to any player in need of help.
Once more, long live the Uni.

I originally tried this game almost 2 years ago, but didn't stay long to be honest. With the new update I thought I'd check it out once again. Started the NPE tutorials and joined the Recruitment channel in-game in search for a corp to guide me back into the intricacies of the game. The chatter in that channel was harsh to say the least, but I bit the bullet and convoed one of the recruiters there. It lasted for about 5 secs and he left before even saying good bye (or giving me the chance to at least). Cold as the vacuum of space outside the hangar bay :( I thought to myself, "what in the world am I doing in this game?!". Then I remembered a new player friendly corp that I'd come across almost 2 years ago, and wondered if they were still around. To my pleasant surprise they were!! So I checked out their web site and joined their in-game chat channel. What a world of difference! It felt like I was talking to people from a completely different game! Members welcomed the influx of interested new players and offered friendly & helpful advice to all. Let's just say I didn't have to think too hard about my choice. I scrambled into my newbie frig, and warped to the nearest Corp Office in my system and signed up. Shortly after, an RO convoed me (wow did I feel special!), and in contrast to the 5 sec. abrupt conversation I had earlier, this one lasted a good few minutes even though I could see many more people in the chat channel pounding on the doors of the E-UNI to join!!
I could go on forever about the unique feeling of camaraderie that filled Corp chat, even though a lot of the members have only known each other for mere days, or even just hours! Not to mention the humility of the Corp directors and staff (who's game experience ranged from months to years). In an attempt to summarize my brief but rich experience with the Corp, let's just say that after flying in a Corp fleet last night (my first by the way), they made this pilot (of only a mere 4 days of experience) seem important, gave him purpose, and made him feel at home in the otherwise harsh & cold depths of space that is EVE Online.
I salute you EVE University, and may you have many more years of great service to new EVE players

Darn, Ceo and didn't even make it to the first page.
Five years ago when I came up with the idea all my EVE buddies thought I was crazy. They were right.
I have been so fortunate to have so many dedicated and competent directors who run the uni on a day to day base. But it's not just the directors, many members, some a few days into the game, step up and take initiative. Every day those new players remind me that it's not the skillpoints but the person behind the pc who determines the level of success in EVE.
Happy birthday to us!

2 months in to eve and the uni, and couldn't be more impressed with the corp. In a game like eve it is truly difficult to stick to an ideal, no matter what it is. The fact that the uni has managed to survive, and thrive all this time is a testament to the selflessness of all those who helped guide it on. Special kudos to Morning Maniac for making it all happen and Kelduum Revaan because he is my boss.

This is currently my second character- the first got canned several years ago because, frankly, I found the game a chore and simply not fun. This go around, I was lucky enough to stumble upon one of their offices in a starter station shortly after character creation. Best decision I've made in game so far.
Yeah, EU has a few...erm.."characters", but by and large is a great bunch of people that are conducive to getting a start in the game and learning some of the ropes. Its a damn dirty shame that certain corps in the game for some reason have a grudge against EU, but hey, that's what 100 man EU Fleets are for!

Words can't express how highly I regard this corporation and our merry group.
This game is one of chaos, backstabbing and intrigue, yet out of this comes altruism which I have never seen in any other MMO - even MMOs that were designed to encourage friendship, peace and cooperation.
This is what makes Eve, and Eve University great.
As Recruitment Manager, I witness first hand the sheer enthusiasm and dedication to learning that so many of newest recruits have. It is a pleasure to work with them and see them grow from inexperienced pilots taking their first steps in the tutorial, to trade tycoons, fleet commanders, pvpers and so many other careers, and even more fulfilling, to see them surpass myself as an Eve player.
Here's to another five prosperous years.
While I'm posting, I'd also like to take a moment to give everyone a point to our Recruiting Thread here and ask people to post there and continue to keep our presence among newbies visible
PS - And to the Goonswarm poster, yes indeed we still are here, teaching newbies, just as you folks are, in your own way :) ______ Cazzah, Recruiting Manager Eve University |

Happy Birthday Uni!!
Seven months and three weeks ago I joined a corporation to learn just how the heck to play this infernally complex game. It was my first real MMO and I had no idea what to do. There were too many options.
That corporation was Eve University. It has taken me a while to find my feet (old dog, new trick thing) but now that I have, I look forward to logging in everyday and learning or helping other players. Two weeks ago, I led my first wartime fleet, a small one (only thirty or forty pilots ). It may not sound impressive to some of you but for me, the shy-est(?) noobiest noob, that was a huge milestone.
Thank you Eve University, Morning Maniac, and the tireless directors for all the effort and care you give to us. We truly appreciate it.
Here's to five more years,

This past Thanksgiving, my cousin introduced me to EVE, who was introduced to EVE by his brother, a PvP'er for years. I wanted to play with my two cousins, but I knew that I lacked skills and experience, and decided to wait until I get proper skills. I struggled finding a learning route and was not pleased the way things were going. I finally found Eve University and my learning comprehension went into warp drive.
I met some great people along the way following my initial struggles. I am sure "Weeks" is an example of the class act that Agony Unleashed is as he was certainly kind and helpful to me. I want to thank the good people at Einherjar Rising for their help along the way. I found my current home at Eve University, and if there is any player out there who knows they like the game but is frustrated regardless of the reason, you really should join Eve University. Not only are the official mentors, instructors and directors helpful, but the great majority of the members have a teaching spirit within them. The resources from files, audio, to classroom, to in space instruction is awesome.
For the health of the game of EVE, the game must have good guys and "bad guys". I respect all corps that instruct, regardless of the end of the spectrum they are on, since EVE is complex, and if you love the game, you need new players to not get frustrated and quit. Eve University is on one end of that spectrum, and from my experience, it is as good as it gets. The testimonials from past members of Eve University are a joy to read.
Thank you Morning Maniac for your vision and Kelduum Revaan and all other officers for making Eve University happen. You put the word "fun" into the game for me.
Happy Birthday!

A game of the depth of EVE has the inherent risk of scaring off many a new player, and E-UNI helps new players overcome the steep learning curve of EVE. If it wasn't for Eve Uni, I would not still be playing this game, and having such a blast doing it.
They took me in as a newbie, and in all my time since I left I notice how much new pilots have missed out on by not joining them like I did.
Simply an institution of the game, long may then continue.
My thanks go out to all those who contribute their time, effort and patience into making Eve a better place for all of us!

I never thought I will see so many Unitas on the CAOD where they are not usually allowed.
But letting the joke aside, grate job and see you in 5 years. Best Corp in EVE in my book.

Edited by: Cobra Ball on 20/03/2009 16:24:14 Congrats Uni! I enrolled two weeks after joining. You guys made the learning curve so much more easier. I always point new players in your direction. Its the best way to get them to learn this game. I am also enjoying seeing players on this thread that I used to fly with when i was in there. Kind of like a high school reunion.

No way I would have stuck with Eve without the EUNI. Fantastic folks teaching fantastic lessons.
o/ to all of the familiar faces here.
If you are a new player to Eve and are reading this (and you should not be reading CAOD anyway) then go apply to EUNI now.
Cheers guys.

Happy Birthday and congrats to E-Uni! I was just a one month old character when the gates of E-Uni let me into their school and I must say it was the best move I've ever made. As one of the recruiters of my current corp, I still refer fairly new and inexperienced players to E-Uni. May your success continue for another 5 years.

While I'm here one minor correction to that article. It says it takes 3 months to graduate. It actually takes 3 months to receive the graduate *title* but you may leave move onto your journeys in New Eden at any time, we don't hold anybody back :D ______ Cazzah, Recruiting Manager Eve University |

I loved hanging out with the EVE UNI guys at Fanfest - I had a blast at the presentation.
Congrats for being a shining symbol of edumacation for the noobies of eve! It would not be fun if all of them did not know how to fit their ships properly! You guys are doing eve a service that not nearly enough people recognize you for.

I'm Unista. And probably I'm not the best person to talk about EVE University. I only want to say that I've been two months in New Eden and now, knowing more about EVE Universe than my second week when I applied for the Uni, I'd return to apply for it.
I think that not only the goal and the values of our corp are the right ones for the pilots that land on New Eden for the first time, like me, but also all of our corpmates are committed with these values and this goal.
So, for all of this, thank you very much friends and happy anniversary Uni!.
See you all in Caldari space and beyond, from the core of Empire to the very limits of the known New Eden and, why not, to W-space...

Edited by: Joe Lost on 23/03/2009 21:10:07 Edited by: Joe Lost on 23/03/2009 21:08:16 It has been a great time here and I am still enjoying it. I am not able to be online as often as some, but the e-uni lets you learn at your own pace. The atmosphere among the unistas is great too. I wish that I could help more, but RL calls all the time.
Grats Morning Maniac for coming up with the idea and starting this whole thing, and also to some of the lead figures of my time here, Dee Carson, Kelduum Revaan, Silentbrick, Acacia, SabreA, Patric, Eyedoll, Cazzah and many others who have made this place what it is. Thanks.

Too bad eve uni doesn't actually teach the newbs how to fight a war without 60 other people with you on the gate... or tells them to dock up otherwise. It's kind of like a 'martial artist' that refuses to spar. |

They were a rather interesting. So kudos to DariusJOHNSON and The Mittani for their patience with being quizzed for a couple of hours each and providing an insight into their views on aspects of Eve. And thank you too LaVista Vista and the upcoming guest lecturers on the current schedule!
Being neutral of course, should someone from BoB (or indeed anyone) feel like addressing E-uni as a guest lecturer please do get in contact. You're not limited to politics etc, any aspect of the game you'd like to talk about would be eagerly attended by our students.

Darius was pretty good but people asked lots of dumb questions.
Mittens was fantastic, and a really interesting talk, I think it inspired our members to think outside the box, rather than just missioning/mining/pvp etc.
Props to you guys and your newbie friendly culture, Goonies :) ______ Cazzah, Recruiting Manager Eve University |
