I want to become a mercenary and join a good merc corp. Can anyone give me a few pointers as to how I can go about this as there are no guides. Thanks

Most merc corps won't take people under 5m sp. Most won't train you. Most don't know how to fit their ships anyway. Most corps in this game are honestly terrible. The best thing to do is to fly around market hubs looking at people's info. If you see a corp you like the look of, convo the member you're looking at, and ask if they're recruiting. Unfortunately, a lot of these idiot lowsec pirate corps value k/d ratio over actual effectiveness in pvp, don't get that t1 frigates can be very useful additions to any fleet, and scorn newbies for some stupid reason.
You might try fitting out 20 rifters and flying them into lowsec, just to get a feel for pvp, and what to expect. Then start your own corp, get a few newbies together, and fly a small blob of t1 suicide ships at people. Blackbirds, vexors, thoraxes, vigils, and ruptures are all pretty great for suicide gangs, and you'll often end up killing a lot of doods. destroyers work well for anti-interceptor work if you don't have the isk for a bs, and falcons can be dealt with with damps or covops warpins.

Besides the slight smackiness of the goon post, he's right. You need to know how to pvp with high efficiency. If you are going to pvp for isk, you need to make sure you can get the job done without operating at a negative.
Also patience, lots of patience.

This.
Being a merc isn't like being a pirate where you can pretty much attack anything you want. Often I'll sit and watch ganks go past because I need to be paying attention to the contract targets.
It's certainly not suited to everyone, but I quite enjoy it, even though it does get silghtly frustrating at times.

All the above posters are spot on tbh.
I'd like to add that even if you can only fly a t1 trig, if your skills are focused and you know how to pvp, then you'll be in a win win situation.
I've managed to solo a maelstrom before with my rifter alt with only 10days training. [He did have a fail fit on there though lol].
Specialize your training and start off by tipping cans.. you will quickly learn the rules of engagement in highsec that way, then when you get competent do what the goon above said and fit out a rifer, look up on battle clinic for some good setups - head to an overpopulated lowsec such as ammamake. Often in places like this you end up getting hunted rather than hunting, so this will teach your how to set safes, use your directional scanner at long and short range etc, whilst also teaching your the capabilities of your ship, so you learn how to fight smart and how to get people to fight on your terms.
But the key thing is practice and patience. You will suffer a lot of losses to begin with, so make sure your clone is updated ;)
Also do some research into how your overview should be setup.

Couldn't have said it better. you spend a big amount of time waiting for the targets like mission runners etc

Alot of gatecamping, waiting for mission runner to get mission out of the main system...
it can be satisfying though, especially when carebears try to fight back when they feel confident with their blob.

Be careful when going into low sec, you may end up being locked out of a few high sec systems or high sec completely. Which obviously means you can't access high sec war targets.

You've gotta be extremely patient, as has been said above. I've known many excellent PVPers who would make terrible mercs because they just don't have the patience to wait for a specific target while passing others up.
Sometimes, you're gonna spend days counting rivets on a station. I once camped a system for 3 days straight to get a logoffski freighter- and I didn't even get the guy, someone else in corp did (I was asleep at the time).
Being professional is crucial, also.

So you want to be a Merc?
Sadly it seems some of the best Merc Corps are no longer very active. Actually this may create opportunities for you.
All of the advice above is excellent.
You can go with patience, skill, cunning, and education. Yes that will work well.
We at Bastages however have never bother with those things. It's possible to be very successful while being as lame as a 20 year old horse with gout. It does require other choices however. Such as the ability to toss self respect & morals out the window. But hey it works for us, and we have been around for years.
So in short . . . check out the various Eve-Related public forums. Read up. And do what suits your playstyle the best. You find a Merc Corp that will take you. Of that I am certain.
