Have to say the last expansion, have been great for my RL. I have no more fun exploring.
Asking myself why it is like this, I would come with the following reasons:
1) No gambling: One of the main fun moments in the old exploration system was the gambling. Like a slot machine you started your scan and hoped for the best. And than after probing long you maybe got the jackpot. Really miss this jackpot feeling.
2) Hectic: The former exploration was no full time business. You had time to rest between the jobs, check the market or contracts, or do something RL inbetween. It had some rhythm, with times to calm down inbetween. The new system forces you to be on edge the whole time. Shifting probes around and around and around.
3) Probe shifting is no fun: Having this one interface and shifting around probes, is simply no fun. Where is the excitment in this?
4) No incentive to get bonus: In the old system, material and skill had been the key to successful exploration. In the new system all is scan strenght and it is rather uninteresting. You get almost any sig without needing any ship or module or skill bonus. The max difference is 2min per sig, so basically nothing. It might be different for deep 0.0, but well, that is not my concern.
Really considering suspending my account and waiting for the next update :(

Remember scanning a worthwhile sig down three hours without success, then watching a new dude in local getting the hit after 10minutes? Was fun!

Everything the OP is complaining about are exactly the things CCP was trying to remove from scanning, becasue they were what most normal people wanted changed.
People who didn't want to sit around 3 and a half minutes waiting for a scan result only to have all that waiting giving you nothing. Eve already has mining, we don't need the mining-but-with-the-possibility-of-zero-reward-for-your-time version too.
If your version of playing eve is staring at market windows and doing RL stuff, get a hulk.

1. Any type of lottery/gambling system makes for absolutely terrible gameplay. I still have nightmares about a minuscule goblin crippling my master assassin with a lucky shot in the die governed Pen-and-paper D&D. The jack-pot feeling can be tweaked back and forth by manipulating the loot/drop chances.
2. The time you HAD to spend was the problem. What of the family man who has maybe 2hrs to play Saturday night? Now he can go out, find and run an exploration site and then join the family with a grin on his face .. previously he dropped probes, scanned 10 times and then closed client because time ran out.
3. Where was the fun in dropping/scanning and then going to do the laundry? On the upside, I never read so many news or books than I did while exploring under the old system.
4. I challenge you to find a small site 5+/10 (can spawn in <0.5 sec.) with Pinpointing skill untrained .. it is doable but will take a lot of work. Strength is by far the most important attribute in the new system, evidenced by the CovOps bonus, but it is by no means the alpha-omega of probing. The Acquisition skill only has real value if you make exploration you main occupation or do a lot of probing in general (recommended at 5 for combat probers though).
Just the fact that we can now make a living doing exploration is a huge step forward, old systems isk/hr was easily trumped by empire mining in a BS.

Yeh. And now doesnt matter if you have full-blown scan character or total newb - you can find everything at same speed.
Maxskill covops pilot (rigged, sisters launcher) vs sleipnir with lv3 skills? Takes exactly same time to find sites. Yay for having the "edge" with lv5 skills + mods + rigs + implants.

This just means you were **** at exploring. I could outrun any lv4 mission runner while exploring, netting 1,5b/day easily (and thats exploration-only).

I assume this was mainly 0.0/very low-sec and by focusing on arc/sal/hack sites BEFORE the invention materials/books became a common commodity?
A deep low-sec/0.0 lvl4 agent yields about the same if you have the stamina to grind missions for 8 hours, more even when you factor in the salvage and LP store side of things.
That Sleipner has practically no chance at finding the smaller signatures, hell there are some that actually requires the STR bonus of a CovOps to reach 100%. For generic exploration it holds true though.

No, this was just before apocrypha. Player skill > "automated grinding". Also good knowledge how/where/when sites spawn help with it too.
