You demo'ed a really cool new Energy Vampire effect which was based on CUDA particle effects on this years Fanfest. The two presentators told much about the new possiblities with state of the art particle systems, e.g. interaction between different particle effects. And that they are working on implenting these new effects into the game.
So now we got reworked effects with Apocrypha. They look quite ok, some are really cool and they are for sure more efficient resource wise than the old ones. I'm quite sure you wrote a new architecture for the effects, but what i do not understand is why there are no real particles. If you look at the new effects closely you can see that they use for example the same old systems for beams (lasers, mining lasers) with "crossed" bitmaps to generate the beam. So there are no real particles, also in the other effects.
So my question is what happened to the plans to make real particle effects for the game ? Time issues ? Or didn't they scale properly performance wise, e.g. for large fleet battles.
The new effects are still nice and you make a great job on this game. It's just because I don't understand that you showcase something that doesn't make it into the game finally.

I think it was just a tech demo, so people get to see what CCP has planned for EVE in the future. Currently we don't even have the premium version of stuff like planets, so things like that have a higher priority.
Seriously, it was just few months ago. I know CCP build up lot of expectations, but there are limits what you can do in that time.

We have to wait till DX11. Look what happens when CCP cut off the classic client, that just more than 8 years old graphic cards that got cut off and ppl are whining. Imagine if you cut off all of the ATI users :).

Well maybe they should fork out for a decent make of graphics card then

I have been wondering about this as well.
The new effects are kinda cool, sure. But particle effects!

Anything that requires a specific make and generation of graphics is very unlikely to make it into the game though they may add openCL versions at some date as they work with both major manufacturers cards.
CUDA is a joke anyway its so heavily hardware restricted you'd have to be nuts or deeply in NVIDIAs pocket to go with it in a game.

Apparently you're unaware that microsoft itself is planning on integrating cuda into directx then.

So we can expect it from CCP some time in June then? ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

And? DirectX10 is three years old and do you see some real advances with it in games? DX10 is still a gimmick, nobody cares about DX11 at this point.

From what I've heard, that particular snippet of video was never intended to be shown to the public and was done so purely by accident.
If I remember correctly the effect was rendered in real time in the engine, but the performance hit of visualizing it is so great that it would cripple current machines, particularly if quite a few similar effects were displayed at the same time. It doesn't scale well, and situations like fleet fights would bring everything to a grinding halt, as if fleet fights weren't bad enough already.

That's because Microsoft stupidly decided to only ship directx10 with Windows ME 2...er I mean Vista. DX10 does in fact do a lot of very nice things over DX9. From what I've heard from people in the windows 7 beta it's a lot better than Vista, so it will likely be adopted more quicly than Vista.

Last I heard those nos effects were pre-rendered and accidentally shown to the public. But I agree with the OP, particle effects would be a huge step forward for EVE graphics. Maybe support for Havoc or PhysX?

In addition, DX11 will be able to downscale itself to DX9 and will not be locked to Vista/7 the way DX10 is.
