Those who use the word to describe themselves see it as a business, usually. It's a playstyle free from the rules of following an empire or the standings of a large alliance / corp. Instead of waging wars and getting excited over playing sim-city in space, the thrill of the experience and/or the potential profit are reason enough for your average pirate.
Those who use the word to describe others usually include anyone who shoots at them without some kind of larger struggle involved (be it a war dec, 0.0 sov warfare or some other official reason).
An anti-pirate is more-or-less someone who only shoots those "approved" targets (even if someone is neutral). However, for active anti-pirates who have the desire to go out and seek pvp rather than simply waiting the lines blur somewhat. There is a good reason most hardcore combat pilots leave systems like NRDS behind when their appetite for violence grows beyond what guarding local miners can provide. |

If you would do a simple search online for the definition of a pirate, you would see that the term itself is very broad.
Historically, pirates have invaded ports, ransomed people, stolen items of value, and more. It boils down to doing nasty extra-legal stuff with the intent of getting rich or die trying.
The only distinctions I can make between what makes a pirate and what doesn't is how they make their money and whether violence is involved or not.
IMO, running missions or mining (lol) to get isk to violence other boats doesn't make you a pirate; it makes you a weekend warrior. It's akin to business executives going out and buying a Harley Davidson with all the nice leather, chaps, saddlebags, and accoutrements.

Indications that someone is pirate:
1. -5 or lower Security status. 2. Says "Yaarrr!!" a lot. 3. Constantly sings about beeing a pirate, living the pirate life, buried treasure or pretty wenches.
I think number 3 is the most important one.

I think I can answer this one after having browsed this forum section for a few days.
1. The amount of posts some pirates post on the Eve forums means they don't have a life outside of the game 2. This leads me to conclude that they're pirates because they need a vent to let their aggressions out 3. why do they have aggressions? answer: Because they fail at life, and probably don't earn a lot of money. 4. So they do enjoy making other peoples life in game as miserable as their own life in the real world.
Intelligent people mine, or trade, or invent, or do something else. People who fail in real life enjoy the way of a people pirate.

No, if you had been right he probably would have resorted to a personal attack. As it is you are over generalizing which is provably wrong in specific cases so cannot be considered 'right'.
And since over generalization is the tool of a troll..well.. if the shoe fits. If it quacks like a duck. If its as big as a whale. If it depends on what the definition of 'sex' is. If you can put a jersey over it and do it for the team. If New Jersey wasn't such a hole...wait..where was I? --

To me a "Pirate" is someone who ransoms, otherwhise they are pvper's looking for killmails/loot to sell. Of course you have the occasional greifer but it happens. I prefer pvper's personally, I'd rather lose a ship (that I should be able to afford) than give them the satisfaction of a bribe. WE DONT NEGOTIATE WITH TERROISTSSSSS, as Bush would say! lol ! |

I think there is quite a difference between Pirates, who generally maintain some degree of honor and a twisted ethical code.. and plain old psychopaths who will pop a ship and warp out without even checking the can.
The universe is hostile, so impersonal. Devour to survive; so it is, so it's always been.

OK I'll bite: first off the "red" list is simply a standing set in one of three ways, personally, by corp, or by the alliance, and is used to show hostile intent towards those who are "red" standings are set in three ways positive or "blue" means you are allied or have a friendly working relationship with the corp/alliance, neut or nothing means you do not know the player/corp/alliance, hostile or "red" means that those are targets for you and you will generally show "red" to them.
Piracy has many forms, and while I havent really engaged in them here are what I have heard of/seen.
Ransoming: usually this is done with a ship or pod locked down, sometimes even close to dying. The pirate or "buisnessman" offers that if you pay a certan amount, then he will let you go. Pay it and you can go, but one thing make sure to ask for clemency to leave the system or you may be ransomed at the gates.
Low Sec Gate Camping: Another way pirates make their kills/isk is by blowing up every ship they can that comes through a gate, then looting the wrecks, there are ways to beat this but those have been hashed out and I would not want to give away the farm so to speak.
However: as much as some people will NOT see this anything that happens in Sovergn Null Sec space is in no way pirating. It is either interdiction of other players from entering space that is being defended at a tremendous cost to the alliances, low level warfare between alliances/corps, interdiction of possible spies, or all out warfare.
Sorry for being long winded but it IS kinda a broad question

I am so stuuuuuuupid. Me try shooting NPCs but me not skilled enough to not go boom. Me try shooting other people but me too stupid to understand game mechanics. Me try to gang up but me not understand complicated strategies. So me stick to mining asteroids because astroids not move or shoot back. Me pay for space combat game to sit and mine in a belt to build things for the real players.

I guess the term pirate is subjective. A person might be a self proclaimed pirate, or might claim not to be.
Anyone who flies into low-sec and gets attacked by a person will automatically file that person into the pirate category, wether the person claims to be one or not.
Also, there's a fine line between anti-pirate and pirate corps. Often times the anti-pirate roamining gangs will engage pretty much whatever they come across, just as pirates do. Only difference is they have a self-proclaimed higher goal than pirates who are content with simply killing and looting.
I guess it all boils down to semantics :P
