Morning guys,
i've decided to make the change to Linux as an OS cause I'm sick of re-occuring issues with Windows and various system lag etc ...
I admittedly work with Windows servers etc and know next to nothing about linux, but i've read 90% of the posts in here about running Wine and the windows EVE client, Am I to assume that there are little bugs here and there but is there a real performance increase using linux over windows?
any advice as to programs being Wine or any other tools to run windows programs or substitutes then please let me know

Your mileage may (wildly) vary.
It's honestly rare to see a clear performance gain in using linux over windows for EVE.
There are reported cases where performance is slightly better, but most of the time, you can expect a performance drop, if anything. --- Kate :: Hikage :: Eradication My corporation is recruiting! |

I tried to check this three days ago. My Computer has both Linux (Debian Lenny) and Vista installed. So I dusted off my vista and (after some hours screaming at the senseless upgrading which tells you next to nothing), I got this:
To be honest, your framerate will drop. My FPS dropped from ~150 in space and ~70 in larger fleets (if it was fluent enough to actually see something) to about 90 in space and 50 in fleets and to around 70 in space and 45 in fleets when running compiz.
I have the distinct impression, that the mini-lags or delays when placing an order/refreshing the market or jumping through a gate are greatly reduced. But its also possible that my sluggish vista causes that.

You could always install gentoo, compile everything with -fzomg-so-fast which will make your system uber.
Now for real. I've been using linux for many years now, but still can't stop myself to re-install Windoze on a spare-drive for games from time to time.
If you are using multiple accounts, there is an ugly bug currently not fixed in wine since some time now which will crash EVE after minimizing it. (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15485)
Though, most of the users are satisfied by running EVE in a virtual desktop. For me, this is not a good enough work-around.
But to what did you actually refer when asking for performance? If it's games on wine, then the answer is usually no.
If a D3D game happens to run faster on wine, then it is likely due to the fact some items are not rendered at all. For example Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. I remember on windows, the plasma generators had some lights indicating the status of the building on top of them, they are not visible in wine.

Desktop-wise, I think Linux has many things to offer to enhance your productivity on desktop related tasks. Compiz is not only all about eye-candy, no it even allows handy things like window tiling and such. (you could use another wm, though).
