My case:
Star Wars: Rebellion (or Supremacy in the United Kingdom and Ireland) is a real-time strategy game released in 1998.
Its the first "game" I install after a system rebuild, I play it a few times a week and have save games from it's release, Why as gamers do we carry on playing older games that have long since lost the retail battle and become rare even on Ebay.
Graphics? SW:R installs DX5.. I don't need graphics to enjoy it, Playablity? ST:R has it, hands down.. Games have come and gone from my hard drive but I've not found a game that I enjoy so much (After Eve).
Whats the one game, that you carry on playing after years of completing it over and over again?, why does it have that "You touch that CD and die" feel to it.
Who needs crysis level graphics? or a million sound channels? what makes a good game to you fine people?

Nice list of games, but why do you keep going back to them? What is it about older games that new ones just don't have?

Ahh, Star Wars Supremacy... that game ****d 3 of my hard drives before I pinned it down as the culprit of a succession of head crashes, god knows what it was doing to them though.
Old games I know and love to this day
System Shock Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time Fallout and Fallout 2 Shogun Total War Planescape Torment
Why do I keep coming back to them? I think the games above have either near perfect game play or top notch characterisation and story line.
In the case of Prince of Persia, it has both, if they'd only implemented a good combat system and allowed you to avoid more fights it would be the perfect game.

I still like to load up Empire Earth every now n then for 14 hour long full generation skirmishes. I don't know why but I love playing large islands. I systematically take each island and fortify them with at least one walled city (my stone production is immense). By the time I get to Nano age I've got the computer pinned in with a fleet of ships and I slowly chip away at him for about 10-20 minutes with aircraft coming from 4 carriers and 4 airfields. After the defenses are weakened I move in my fleet to take care of any shipyards and stragglers. Once all that is done I fly a regiment of troops in and hit explore and let them finish the enemy off. Of course in most cases there is usually some peon stuck in a random corner that I have to spend the next 30 minutes looking for.
And my father stole my copy of Battlezone over a decade ago and to this day still plays it.

For me a game must have Depth in order for me to play it and really enjoy it, I have no problem playing a fun shooter like FEAR but it'll never be my #1 game unless it's all about the details.
As such my favourite games tend to be pretty unpopular these days (Aside from EVE of course) for example I have played RetroMUD for years now and don't see myself stopping any time soon, I keep playing Nethack and ADOM, I very much enjoy all the careful planning and detail involved in building a stunning Dwarf Fortress and the openness of some RPGs like Wizardry and Daggerfall. Of course, I still find it hard to take off the old nostalgia goggles and so my early games will always have honorary places on my list of fave games with Colossal Adventure and Lords of Time (Level9 computing I miss you , I even have Lords of Time on my DS) as well as Harrier and other such games. Perhaps somewhat controversially I never was a big fan of Elite, I think I was probably doing other things at the time and glossed over it.
All time fave though? hmm.. that's tough.. so tough infact that I can't give you an answer I love all those games.

Battlezone.
F-22 ADF (I don't play it myself, I'm not pro enough to even touch it, but wow - still)
"My truck is loaded."
Deer Hunter (what, you never camped a gate in your life?)
EVE Classic.
Battlezone.
But no. This is inadequate. Need more polygons. More particle clouds and shaders! Throw moar!

In my case, after having played literally hundreds (if not thousands) of PC games, the clear winner(s) after all these years are Thief 1 & 2. Other runners-up are Doom (2) and Fallout 1 & 2.
In all of the above cases the reason is pretty much the same: Fan-made content. Very few games have had as much user content created for them as Doom, while Thief and the Fallout games have dedicated fans creating high-quality content as we speak. For games over a decade old, that's saying something.
In the case of the OP and Star Wars: Rebellion (Supremacy), the reason is different but perfectly understandable: High replay value. Many strategy games similar to Rebellion offer a different game with each playthrough, as random maps and events call for different tactics. Civilization and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri are two similar games I also hold in high regards. |

Old games I love:
Xwing Freespace 1 & 2 ST: Armada 1 Homeworld 2 Sim city 3000
I think we love the old games because they are innovative, have a particularly interesting storyline, falling to that "our first time in the genre" catagory or just happen to still manage to run on the computer. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Elite Frontier and First Encounters for gameplay that goes on and on. No storyline unless you want to play it.
Wing commander 2 & 3 and Prophecy. Some stories are just made to re-enact over and over.
Privateer 2. Now I wonder what would happen if I took this path and made that decision instead.
Plus the fact that recently, there seems to be a shortage of new space sims. Why can't CCP create an open ended sim based on Eve? It could be a huge hit. --

The difference is the developers being daring, experimental and trying to make something funky rather than the cubicle, 9-5 code monkeys who are being suppressed by the mighty publishers who just want you to churn out Dead Horse 17, and they already got you by the balls so you'll have to make them 18 and 19 too.
In other words; they lost their soul, which means soulless boring games. Thing is ofcourse they get bought by the zillions. No one plays Psychonauts, everyone plays NFS37 and Anime_ripoff84.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned UFO/Terror froom the Deep yet. Legendary games still worth replaying.
Why I replay them:
Atmosphere. UFO especially. MIB, secret bases, alien invasion, alien mind control, you get to kill greys and make flying saucers. And all before the x-files came out.
Challenge - TFTD especially. 2nd Jan base invasion has been known
Player actions have consequences. Losing half your squad for a lobster man navigator (critical research alien) can make life much easier, and dodging a hard terror site can come back to haunt you when the funding nations give final notice and theres only ethereals.
And like someone else said, it was a game I played when younger.

Back in the old days game had to have a IDEA to sell. Nowdays it seems that most of the effort goes into making it look pretty and actual gameplay will remain somewhat ... shallow ... in most cases. Thus those old enough to remember what game should be like drift back to nethack or Elite II or whatever from time to time.
Nothing wrong with pretty game ofc - but at the end of day it's the actual content that counts.

Age of Empires 1 and 2 were my all time favorite games when i was younger, i easily spent 6 hours a day playing both multiplayer and trying to beat my previous time on beating the campaigns.
Other old favorites are deffinitly Duke Nukem, it was my first mature content game, and boy did i love it. Not to mention i loved playing it at only 5 years old. :D
The original Doom gets a mention for the same reason as Duke Nukem. It was also my first ever FPS i played multiplayer on, whether it was LANing with my dad or with anyone else i could find.
Finally, my favorite Star Wars games of all time are the original Dark Forces series. I am of course biased because back then at my young age i thought star wars was the only thing in the world that mattered. (altho i still have that problem sometimes :P) I also really loved the multiplayer, almost as much as the Doom multiplayer. -----------

Fallout 1+2 cause I enjoy a well-told story more than I do graphics.
X-wing and Tie Fighter cause sci-fi simulaters are almost always better than sci-fi action-shooters.
Half-Life 1 Cause I can play it for a whole week, rather than just a whole hour.
Flashback cause not every game is better in 3D. (looking at you Fade 2 Black!)

Oh yes, Syndicate rocks. 4 little guys running around in trenchcoats with miniguns and an arsenal of other weapons and upgrades. I like being able to shoot at a car to make the owner run off and then your guy driving off in it. It has to be the original GTA, Rockstar just stole the idea

Great topic. I've been an avid gamer for years now, and I totally have the same want to go back to old games that just captured me.
My first few games: Civilization.. Yeah what can I say, earth domination goodness, a game that i still have a copy of and will fire up from time to time. I spent years of my childhood with this game. A game with infinite replay ability and super simple graphics. Warcraft.. My first true RTS and i still remember killing that bastard medhiv or whatever his name was, that game really captured my imagination. X-wing vs Tie Fighter.. One hell of a simulation, i played it for years and got pretty damn good at it, even online. I miss it now as nobody seems to play it, and my copy of the game seems to have long disappeared. Starcraft.. What can I say a timeless classic, was a fun b.net game too, beware of the zerg.
To me a good game has depth, and evolution. Graphics can suck as long as the game grabs my imagination and keeps it going. I'm a big wargame and simulation fan. It seems games now have more fluff that true substance. I remember my first time playing a game called Shining Force for sega, now i was a kid mind you, but the story caught me up, and I could feel the genuine emotions from the characters, and my hair would stand on end everytime a character would become possessed by the uber bad guy.
Another great old school RPG, Lunar.. anyone ever play that? Great storyline and alot of really good movies and such, hard game to find now. Another game was XenoGear for PS1, that game was alot of epic fun.
What happened to uber epic bosses that you really feared. Games today don't seem to have it like they used to. I could remember no matter how good you were or how much you prepared, you were in for a heck of a fight. True there are bosses in alot of games, but for whatever reason, i don't feel like i really need to dispatch them, kinda like there is no emotional connection. When i finish a game, i want to feel something, good, bad, whatever have you. And want to feel a sense of I WON YOU B**CH!
As games continue on and get more graphically intense, i hope the developers and such remember why I play a game. And why i will continue to play. And just because you polished a piece of poo, and it's pretty and shiny, doesnt mean it isnt a piece of poo anymore.

Freespace 1 & 2 : Fun and the storyline.
Diablo 2 : Awesome replayability by classes and "omg a gold item!!"
Alien Legacy: Old unknown game I like very much because the storyline differs slightly each time. I'm still planning to do a remake of this one sometime.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (or the new 5)
Imperium Galactica 2 or Galactic Civilizations : Replayability because of the randomness of games.
I used to play Diablo 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic with my brother so it gives the game some extra depth for me.

Anything Total War.
KOTOR I and II
NWN through Hoards.
Why keep coming back? Cause.
Why do you watch say Family Guy or South Park or god the Simpsons?
You like it. You find it entertaining for 1 - infinty hours.
In my case with Civ, every game is different. Sometimes I prepare for with a certain nation but never go through with it. Other times I don't and get my ass handed to me 100 years later. Sometimes you just conquer everyone. Never Trust and Aztec who is not a vassel.
I learn the basics, then try out different things each time. Its different everythime.

Old games I still play:
Baldur's Gate I & II + expansions KOTOR I and II Diablo I and II Master of Orion II Master of Magic Starcraft Heroes of Might and Magic III and IV Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries Aliens vs. Predator II (no relation to the movie, for those who've never played it) Star Wars: Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy
For the roleplaying games, the reason I still play them is simple: great story and/or great gameplay. In roleplaying games the essence of the game is pretty much universal; you could massively reduce the graphical quality of a modern RPG and it would still be enjoyable (assuming it was enjoyable in the first place, that is). The same goes for the strategy games I listed above; each of them has unique aspects that make them eminently playable despite their age. Mechwarrior 4 is there because the entire Mechwarrior franchise was absolutely awesome, with gameplay elements you don't really find anywhere else. (I still have my copies of Mechwarrior 2 and Mechwarrior 3 though I can't/don't play them anymore. Also, the original creator of the franchise got the rights back, so we may FINALLY see a new Mechwarrior game for the PC sometime in the future. \o/)
As to the last two games on that list, they're something of an anomaly. When it comes to FPS games, the graphics are often a deciding factor to me. When you're in first person view in an action-oriented environment (as opposed to a story/interaction-based or strategy-based environment), the graphics quality really has an effect. It helps add immersion and draws you deeper into the game, heightening your awareness of your in-game surroundings. This leads to much more intense and fun gameplay.
All of that said, AvP2 doesn't have the most uber graphics. In fact, they're extremely dated - a lot of the objects in the game are only modeled in 2-D. That said, it's what the design team DID with those limited graphics that was absolutely impressive. The graphics, combined with awesome sound, create the most tense, creepy game I've ever played. Add in a few other items, such as many pitch-black and low-lit areas, flickering lighting, limited charge on your flashlight, the sounds of dripping water, blowing wind, and creaking structures...oh, and ALIENS...and you end up with one of the most environmentally brilliant games in existence, with just about the most immersive atmosphere imaginable.
Envision crawling along a pitch-black ventilation shaft with no sound but the hollow clank of metal from your own movements. Your flashlight battery is almost dead, and you're praying it will last until you get to a lighted area. No such luck; it caps out on you, and you stop, waiting for it to recharge sufficiently for use. Of course, it's at this very moment that you suddenly hear the pulsing chirp of your motion tracker (which, like everything else, sounds EXACTLY like it did in Aliens), which now has a tiny white dot...and the volume of your motion tracker quickly intensifies as it moves towards you in the darkness, making a hissing noise.
Then there's the Jedi Knight games, which were simply fun, and the graphics aren't (yet) so dated as to be unenjoyable.
There's another game I'd add to the list if it wasn't so old that the graphics would be massively pixellated: Hexen. As far as the truly old FPS games, it's most definitely my favorite. The atmosphere and the gothic art direction in the game made it eminently enjoyable for me, and I'd go out and buy it in a minute if they updated the graphics to be fully modern and uber. (I truly enjoy gothic-themed graphics in FPS games, for some reason. On a related note, I wish the newer Unreal Tournament games hadn't gone cartooney and had kept the gothic-looking graphics of many of the leves in the original Unreal Tournament.) -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! Ha, old games... hmm..
- EV:Nova (Great game, spent so long on that game.. even ended up making a small mod for it!) - Conquest: Frontier Wars (B'cos spaceships are kewl! ) - Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (B'cos it was full of original win)
Other than that my HD is full of modern rubbish like Quake 4, right through to Crysis Warhead and Assasins Creed.
Fake Edit: Almost for the old NFS series! *slaps himself

The original Unreal was awesome. I loved using the sniper rifle and blowing the heads off those little guys across the bridge. Although a bit corny, I used to laugh when they put their hands up to look for their head and then fell over after they couldn't feel it where it should have been. I agree, the whole feel and ambience was a bit spooky in the original but that only added to the overall effect and made the game worth playing.

System Shock 2
Oh god, I still have nightmares about this game. The spiders and...the midwives, oh god the midwives.
Silent Hill 2
Yet again, scary as hell, no matter how many times you play it, and it has a wonderful atmosphere.
Freespace
It's so simple - there are angry aliens, you shoot the angry aliens, you shoot the angry aliens before they turn Earth into a glow in the dark glass park. And flying a Hercules was just damn fun...six shots, more then enough to kill anything that moves. Which brings me to...
Metal Gear Solid
Oh Hideo, how corny your dialogue is. But in the end, that's what makes the game really memorable and fun to come back to.

There was a second Syndicate Wars which didn't have much more than the original in the way of weapons and upgrades but it was still just as much fun. I think there wasn't much in the way of advertising for it which is probably why it didn't sell so well. I only heard about it by way of a bargain bin at my local computer store.

Hmm.. The recipe of a good game for me would be depth in the game, a good story, depending on the game type.. something somewhat original, or something that will leave similar games in the shadow of it.. but regarding old games, i guess its abit of good memories in the mix that makes me get back to them.. maybe a bit of nostalgic feeling towards the games aswell.
dont play the following 2 anymore, but they where kinda the first 2 games i tried and loved, back when starting the whole gamer "career", and deserves a mention..
zak mckracken and the alien mindbenders - back in the c64 days, it was my favorite game..
Wizard of wor - was good for "multiplayer" games, and i still remember beating my sister at it.
Fallout series - Will never get tired of these. dunno exactly why.. Maybe cause of the setting, environment and the story which was epic back then, and made me love it..
final fantasy - X in particular, somewhat recent, but will always make me come back as long as my ps2 or 3 doesnt crap up on me.. SOOO many hours I've put in that game.
Empire earth (the first + expansion, II and III are horse****)- i love the style of it, and the evolution concept in it.. and a great multiplayer game..
warcraft 3 tft - kinda speaks for it self, for those who do play it still..
Heroes of might & magic - still play 3,4 + expansion from time to time..
gran turismo - dont play the original anymore, but imo, the spirit of it have lived on up until now, so the sequels are kinda the same thing.. so yea, i guess thats an "old" game i still play, and will as long as they keep spewing that series at the market.
theres some more i used to play alot and loved, but i dont play those anymore.. dunno why though, as i still consider them to be great games, even with their crap ass gfx. like settlers, civilization, diablo 1 + II, Red alert..
Im rabbling on, but i honestly cant tell exactly what makes a, not good, but a great game for me..

Anyone ever play the old game Stars! ?
I did, and even though it offered very little eye candy, it was a whole world of imagination for me. Creating a race of something and seeing it in my minds eye, then going on to conquer and colonize every star in the known universe...I really loved that game when I was a kid and I'd love to get my hands on a copy now, but its damned impossible to find.
Another one I'll admit to playing when I was younger was a game called Mordor. Same thing, no eye candy but great for the imagination of a 10 year old kid with a ****ty computer. I actually have a copy now, but its not as fun as it used to be when I was a kid.

well letssee.... old games that are still installed/on shelves are
Fallout 1 & 2 - just best non-fantasy RPG created, ever
UFO: Terror from the deep - many disagree, but I like the "Terror" more than first installment
Arcanum - still coming back to it occasionally
Vampire: Bloodlines - game that just oozes style and awesome dialogue from every pixel
Angband - yeah, haven't played that in 2 years at least but it's still sitting in my comp
hmm... noticed that most of the games I listed are from pre/Troika. Dang they were good, with Looking Glass (Deus Ex, Terra Nova, System Shock etc, ) they were best developers around.

Ultima Online, over 10 years old (almost 13, iirc?) The grand-father of MMORPG's. This game still kicks ass because of its mix of game-mechanics complexity and the simplicity of graphics ;)
UO, imo, is the living proof that MMORPG's are not about eye-candy graphics.
Aside from UO, i play AoE II every now and then, some Quake 3 Arena and I used to play RtCW: ET till the Portuguese servers went down.

Storytime!
I don't know if anyone of you have heard of Knight and merchants. A RTS game made of pure freaking win. I remember it so well, I was around 8 or 9years old, and my mom took me to a computer games store - asking what I'd like for Christmas present, since she didn't know anything about games. I went crazy with roller coaster tycoon and said it was the game I definetly wanted, but then my mom showed me KaM and said "Hey, what about this one, you love medival times and knight and all that. Wouldn't this be something for you?", and I replied that I'd much rather have roller coaster.
Christmas came, and I recieved roller coaster, I was so happy. But I also recieved KaM, I threw into a corner - and let it collect dust. After a month or two, I got bored with roller coaster. I decided that I'd give KaM a try, I installed it - and I was hooked since second 1. I spend atleast a year playing that game, fantasizing about different strategies. Eventually my friends started to play it aswell, and we took this with us in real life. We spent our time building tree houses, resembling the ones from the game. "Hey, we now have a storehouse to stash our stuff in - we now need an inn we can eat in..." and eventually we assigned persons to be farmers, labourers, carpenters and even blacksmiths . We practically lived in our treehouses that summer, and I've never been as tanned as then.
It's a RTS, being extremly sloooooow. It takes around 30minutes to produce your FIRST basic soldier, also your soldiers require food being brought to them, or they'll die. Which means you can't have a large army without a ridiculus amount of food supplies. It's also really complex, for a RTS to produce supplies. For example, to make bread you need to: Build a farm > Make a nice soil to grow wheat on > Wait until the wheat can be harvested > take the wheat to a bakery > a baker makes bread > have a serf pick it up > take it to a inn > eat/bring to soldiers.
I suppose that's why I'm still playing it atleast once a month. The complexity, and still simplicity. Not to mention the music fits so perfectly in. Medieval folk music, pleasent, and jolly.
I have so many good memories around this particular game, that I could go on for hours. Let's leave it here.

Starcraft The balance between the races is just perfect and I love to play a few games with my friends or do a bit of compstomp.
Halflife Maybe it's the nostalgia but this is the first 3D shooter that I really liked, great pace and smooth gameplay imho, and lanparties with some friends on Crossfire are just the best.
Transport Tycoon Deluxe (openTTD) Again a great LAN game to see who can build the biggest empire, all my friends play it too, we have epic networks by the time we switch steam for electric.
Soldat This game just nails it for me for multiplayer madness, too much fun, again with friends :)
GTA 2 Tag on small city is alot of fun on a lan party :D
Serious Sam Stampeding trough maps with a few friends is brilliant.
I guess I'm a lanparty player when it comes to older games.
Solo I replay Zelda Ocarina of Time once in a while and I recently completed Starcraft+Brood Wars, Homeworld+Cataclysm and Advance Wars again.

And why do we keep returning to the old classics? They had soul. They had good stories, humour, they were inventive. And ofcourse they bring back som nostalgic memories :)When life was without concern.
Todays games are pretty much streamlined in both story and graphics. Us "oldtimers" or nerds if you prefer have seen it all before. Todays 3d shooters have awesome graphics, but the stories are worse than they were 20 years ago (i got my first computer 23 years ago ). To make it short. We have seen it all before and again and again and yet ...again.
Ppl pick "old games" from 2000. Try the real old games that said "bip" "bip" "bip". I had a C64 with a casette player. We had casettes full of games and we had to adjust a small screw on the player to hit "the right track" Imagine the tension as we prayed that we had adjusted it correctly lol.

/offtopic I played Gold Rush, but wasn't too fond of it personally.
I also don't remember the cassettes that you are talking about. My memories are of having an entire game on a single 3.25" disk and you could play the game off of it, and have room for up to 10 save games. That, and the Bernolli Drives that held 20mb disks the size of a serving platter. I remember how advanced my family thought we were when we upgraded to the 44mb Bernolli drives and the disk was only slightly bigger and thicker than a 5.5" floppy. /end offtopic
But I agree, the reasons people go back to the old games are for the stories. Graphics weren't that advanced back when adventure and rpg games were coming out, so in order to sell the game it had to have something else, a story that could get you hooked. Nowadays it's all about the "bling" on the screen and storyline has fallen to second priority, except for a few rare games (recently, Fallout 3 comes to mind that has both great graphics and an immersive storyline). Roberta Williams, Al Lowe, the "Two Guys from Andromeda", the games created by these people will live forever, and will continue to be played, and I for one will introduce my children to gaming through these (if I ever have children) and keep the games alive.
