Edited by: Ana Vyr on 20/03/2009 16:36:58 You can play in reletive saftey as long as you stay in high security space. Just pretend that lowsec systems autoflag you for PvP.
Staying high sec gets kinda dull after a while, but by the time that happens, you'll have some experience and know what you are dealing with.
Once I got a Blockade Runner transport ship I found I was unable to resist those sweet buy orders posted in lowsec as bait to pull industrialists into gatecamps .

I've noticed the rookie channel has been backed up with the same questions every ten or so minutes (from different rookies), so perhaps the tutorial needs to be more comprehensive at outlining how to make clones (and that it's important) and about low-sec space sooner...
Tutorials need to be understood, not only "to be done like a mission (fast)"...
And after, EvE needs to be read in his forum, at least, to understand his game-mechanics.
Can't someone do this??? DON'T play EvE, try "Space Invaders"...

Originally by: Maxpie Don't listen to all those people telling you to go play WoW. Perhaps you should, but first ask yourself a question. How did you feel when you got podded? Has a mere game ever made you feel that way before? It is the risk and the severity of consequences that sets Eve apart. Perhaps that is not for you, but let me tell you, it is an experience you will not get in just any game.
You can minimize the risks quite easily, as some have mentioned. Stay in high-security if you don't want to "turn pvp on" and basically don't go ahead with anything that pops a warning screen. Keep your clone updated and get insurance for your ship. Most importantly, if you decide to give it another go, find a good corporation that is interested in the same things as you (missions, mining, whatever). They will help you, show you the ropes, protect you, etc. Your corporation button opens up a screen that has a recruitment tab I believe.
Eve is very freeform and as a result can both be quite harsh and quite exhilarating. It's not for everybody and that's ok, but it is so much more compelling than the simple grind that sums up most other mmo's.
I highly agree with this post. I didn't "get" Eve for a couple of trials. I've tried the game probably 6 or 7 times over the years and only on my recent trial did I finally "get" it and subscribed.
See, you just lost your ship and skill points. Well, it's time to hunt down the bastards that did it to you.
This reminds me of an anime (LOL) called Kaiji. It's about a man named Kaiji who gets invited to a Mafia gambling event to erase all of his debts. Eventually Kaiji meets the boss of this Mafia and realizes why the Boss loves gambling away large sums of money and taking a ton of risks with his life. He never knows what happens. It's the same thing in EVE. I have no idea what might happen in the future. I might be involved in a huge fleet battle or I might gank a loaded miner and make millions. I just really don't know. I'm an EQ vet and realized why I have become bored with those typical MMOs: they are all the same. With all the information on the web about these games, you can basically just play it on autopilot. There's no risk or variation.
In EVE, there is so much variation that I doubt I'll ever get bored of this game.
I'll leave you with the moment when I finally GOT it with this game.
I had never been to 0.0 space before and I decided to take my first trip in there early in my latest trial. Fitted up a Slasher with some noob autocannons for a little pew pew and jumped to the nearest 0.0 system. Nothing there. Jumped through a few more gates till what is this floating around the gate? Cargo containers and wrecks (suspect it was the remains of a gate camp)! I approach one of these containers and open it, JACKPOT (for a noob). Tons of loot waited inside. Went to a wreck and started to loot it. There was one more cargo container left and as I approached it, I heard a sound that sent my heart racing: the sound of someone jumping through the gate. I decide to continue approaching the container and watch to see what the person that has just jumped through does. I open the container as the person sits there and start looting things, my heart pounding because I don't know if I'll suddenly be podded. As I loot the last item in the container, the other pilot jumps back through (guess he was a scout?) and I spam the warp to for another gate in case his friends are coming back. I made it out safely and made a few mil off of the loot I got.
In real life I am much more cautious with things like money (though not too much) and would NEVER think of stealing. But I can in this game. And it's ****ing fun and exhilirating.

Without PVP, there would be no financial empires, no need for manufacture. PVP drives the eve economy, if you want to be a rich little carbear that's fine, but you better hope that someone, somewhere, is blowing somebody's **** up, and alot of it too.
As for your stuff, learn how to keep it out of harms way (even if it means not undocking, there are probably many players that spend 99% of their time in stations doing their market pvp / research / manufacture / scamming etc.) If learning to play is not something you are prepared to do, then don't stick around and whine, nobody claimed that eve isn't a difficult game.

As a devout carebear, I feel for you. I made those mistakes early on in this game when there were few guides to help ease the learning curve. However, I learned this the same way you did except I did it with an uninsured BS, with a base clone. I barely had the skills to fly it, let alone the weapons skills and tank skills needed. I spent my life savings on that BS, then went straight to 0.0 to rat, and got podded within 10 minutes.
You do have a choice in PvE and PvP. In hisec space you are fairly (but not totally) safe.
I got angry, sent the guy who podded a whiny email, with a prompt response of him LHAO. I cried more and quit. 2 months later I was back on.
I learned the hard way because there was little info at the time. There WAS info available, but I chose to find out the hard way.
So, yes, I feel for you, but no, you had plenty of info out there to tell you not to do what you did.
Suggestions if you decide to come back:
Join Eve University--they will teach you the ropes. Read as many guides as you can. I am too lazy to get the link, but they are all over the forums. DO NOT WHINE! I am actually suprised how nice everyone is being to you in this thread to be honest.
Remember this advice:
If you go into low sec, expect to die. A LOT Keep you clone up to date Insure your ship(s) Don't fly what you can afford to lose Someone is better than you Go on the test server to practice Find a good corp to teach you No one cares if you lost your ship
I hope you give it another try. Good luck

NO this game is not WOW where you get to pick a PVP or PVE server, or *flag* yourself, (in eve PVP flags you.) and if something like that ever happens it will be the end of this game. if you dont like interaction with other players play something single player or WOW same difference.

Every ship I undock is dead when I press the 'undock' button. Some people don't like playing with that mentality, but I find it exciting.
There are plenty of ways to stay safe in this game and plenty of ways to find trouble. Take a break and come back. You might enjoy it the next time around.

Edited by: Amos Kable on 29/03/2009 17:23:42 This game of internet spaceships, takes zero brains to play. It is no more thought intensive than wow. It's that simple. Cunning, however, and general common sense is needed. And common sense really ain't that common. I have not read a module description, or pop up warning that I could not comprehend. Ditto with skill descriptions. Don't fool yourselves into thinking this is a "smart" persons game, or that somehow playing this one makes one "better" than someone who plays wow, or hello kitty. It's entertainment. If someone doesn't like shooting at other people, so be it. If someone likes shooting at other people, so be it.
My fun is not spoiled by someone else's idea of fun. I cannot be griefed, or harassed. Because if you grief me, pod me, or pop me while I am toodling along; you have wasted your time, because I don't care.

Yep, you were told in the initial tutorial that low security space is dangerous and doesn't provide any protection above sentry guns. You chose to ignore this.
When you jumped into low security space you were warned AGAIN that it was dangerous and YOU CHOSE to ignore this for a second time.
When you've read about the game a bit more on these forums you will find the first maxim of this awesome game: 'Never fly that which you cannot afford to lose'.

This, mostly.
In PVE I don't feel there's a serious risk of losing a ship. All I need to do is fly smart, and the only risk I'm taking is a suicide gank. In PVP, if I come back in the ship I left in, I have a bonus ship.

Fuldon, you should have gotten a message pop up when you enter a 0.4 system or lower (the PVP systems).
Says something like....you can be killed here!!!
Anyways, you can't be killed like that if you stay in 0.5 - 1.0 systems also known as High-security or EMPIRE.
You gotta understand the is a really hardcore game and most hardcore players (like the lvl 80 elites in World of Warcraft) here are PVP/pirates out in low-sec space. They've been playing for months or even years and have millions of skill points, they have big nasty ships and the best weaponry and to top it all off they're just waiting around pretty much to kill someone like you.
Why you ask? well who knows they get some sadistic pleasure in tracking down someone they know they can beat and crushing them. Probably because they got bullied in school I don't know...ANYwho...good luck and stay out of low sec until you really really read...like after you been playing for a year or two.
Have fun

I felt the same way when I fist started playing. In fact, I would venture to say that most people, despite what they may say, contemplated uninstalling after losing their first ship, or worse yet, their first pod with a clone that wasn't updated. The difference between us and you though, is that we realize that it's a vital mechanic of the game and it isn't going to change.
I hate solo PVP. I'm not good at doing it, and I'm not good at fitting ships for it. I'm with an alliance in 0.0 space, and I NEVER solo PVP, even after a year of playing. You don't have to EVER pvp if you are smart. If local starts filling up, run like hell.
I just recently restarted playing eve after being gone for about 6 months. When I left eve, I had a skill training that would take roughly 45 days. When I came back, I had my nice new skill, but my alliance had left the space I was in. My clone was now out of date, in a hostile system, in a hostile station, where I couldn't update my clone, or fit a ship, or anything. I lost everything I had my first day back at eve, including 1.5m SP, but you know what...I'm still playing.
In closing...

Hey, losing my beloved first cruiser and two destroyers has made me do things like trying to complete courier missions into losec in my shuttle. Imagine that, a game that makes you think and doesn't have a book solution to every problem.
I know that the tutorials warn you to keep an updated clone because I just finished them a week ago. I've even bought my first jump clone. Danger is spice and keeps Eve from being just another solo computer game.

You guys are not saying what you should..
If you you want PVE only stay in the noob Corp and never leave Empire. problem solved.
If you go into a dark ally you might get jumped, shot, or stabbed.. If you go into into low security systems you might be kiled, shot, and podded.
I personally don't think eve should have PVE. If you wanted to do some PVE you should go buy some legos and make some spaceship looking things and zoom them around in my hands and attach one to a fan/tard/little brother/dog...
