Relax, with the progression that CCP has shown and the frequency of new skills on the market there should be plenty of time to train all 6 specializations to Large Lvl 5

If skills designed for specialization would be easy to train then everyone would have all so called specialization skills soon at level 4 which would mean there is no specialization. It's not that hard to understand.
The 10% bonus sounds tiny but it will make a difference. If this difference is worth your training time or if you prefer to be versatile is up to you. I do believe specialization is a valid option as much as being a jack of all trades a valid option is.
The combat system of Eve is very hard to balance. With new modules/ships there will always be some kind of advantage/disadvantage here and there (unfortunatly). There is a chance you will be able to compensate a nerf because you are specialized as much as there is a chance to compensate because you can switch to another races ship and weapon system. The decision is up to you.
Specialization takes a long time. The times of progression of a noob who can train lots of skills in no time from 0 to 3 are history for vets. This is helping new players to close the gap of performance while they never will be able to close the gap of skillpoints. Specialistation will enable new players to become better than vets in their field of specialization (think: close range vs long range, and new player fights at his range). The skillsystem of Eve is brilliant.
I hope for more specialization in other areas like industrials, mining, EW. I hope for real 'playable' science/trader/smuggler/... careers. One day each of us will realize he cant do everything. Like in real life. This will enforce teamwork but hopefully will also enforce the need to hire specialized freelancers for a job.

This is just another misguided, not very well thought out addition to the game. I started another post about skills in general and the duration of time needed to train etc.
These specialization skills are just stupid and a waste of time. I don't think CCP even thinks about this stuff, I think they just do it. So we will waste months training these skills and they will just nerf them or change the direction of the game making these useless.

don't like them?
don't train them.
nobody is forcing you to specialise.
personally, i plan on specialising in hybrid stuff, so i welcome the new skills. |

Edited by: Evona Moucrou on 18/08/2004 09:32:01 You forget one thing about the tech2 gunnery skills: The skill lets you use the weapons in the first place. The 2% bonus is a generous addition to this.
Generous?
Think about this collection of skills:
small x turrets 5 - at 5% +dam per skill gunnery 5 - at 2% +rof **) surgical strike 5 - at 3% +dam per skill ship skill 5 - at 5% +dam per skill
Assuming base damage: 1
1 * 1.25 * 1.1 * 1.15 * 1.25 = 1.98
The 2% for each special weapon skill are in fact: 3.94 % extra damage per skill level.
With 5* 2% this we could reach 2.17 times the base damage.
If the special weapon skill would give 5% each we could do 2.47 times the base damage
And I am not fully certain if there are not even more ROF skills. Hmm. i think one ship has 5% +dam and 5% +rof.
1.98 * 1.25 = 2.47
In that casae the 2% would be: 4.94 % extra damage per special skill.
With 5* 2% this we could reach 2.72 times the base damage.
If the special weapon skill would give 5% each we could do 3.09 times the base damage
The more different +DAM and +ROF skills there are, the more boost a tiny percentage will do.
**) is gunnery 2% or 5%? ***) rounded to 2 digits, math done with all

Although I do think it should apply to the tech 1 turrets, too.
Agree totally. Especially the last part :)
