Edited by: Drakxter on 17/08/2004 21:59:10 Ok.. Look at this.
Helios
Hull: Maulus Role: Covert Ops Frigate
Designed for commando and espionage operation, its main strength is the ability to travel unseen through enemy territory and to avoid unfavorable encounters.
Race Special: 25% Small Hybrid Turret Damage and 50% Scout Drone Thermal Damage bonus.
The Helios has on top of this: 100 m3 Drone bay 0m3 cargo bay (It does not say anywhere that it has any cargo space, so we must asume it has none) EDIT: Seems they have cargo after all.. So dont mind this. 2 Turret slots 2 High slots
What are covert ops ships good for.. Flying unseen, and thats about that (being unseen can be used for a lot of things). Is it meant for fighting. No.
Now the problems: * Why does the race bonus give it bonuses for hybrid turrets, A bonus that will most likely never be used by anyone. * Why does it give a bonus for drone damage? It only has a 100m3 drone bay.. Do anyone really think two light scout drones will be able to do any damage, thats worth anything, to anything? * Why does this ship have 2 turrets slots, and only 2 high slots, when we all know one high slot will be used for the COCD (covert ops cloaking device).. The ship is useless without a cloaking device.
Its the same with the other races ships. They have strange race bonuses, that are useless, and room for more turrets and launchers then it can ever use.
My point with all this is: Why not remove these strange race bonuses, and instead give some bonuses thats usefull for the ship, (Could be something with targeting/EW) ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

5 or 10% velocity or agility while cloaked would be alot better

Their cargo is the same as the regular frig that their based on. I know this because it was the same way with inty's. Said 0 in the specs, but it's not really zero.
I do agree though. Those bonus's seem a little.....useless??

Glad you see my point in these bonuses being useless..
Personally I think the Helios and its 100m3 drone space and drone bonus is a bit of a bad joke.. ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

Not sure, but the CPU bonus on Covert Ops ships is for 'covert operations modules'?
Maybe its slots and turrent designations will be used in conjuction with other options that arise from different covert operations modules beyond the cloak?

Agreed though, on the drone bonus ... That seems somewhat misplaced, unless there's going to be a drone bay low slot or something added later - and that doesn't sound particularly 'covert' either, anyways.

It would really help if a dev could post here to help clear up, if the race bonuses really are ment to be that useless, or if they have some idea behind it all? ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

Is it possible to launch the drones then cloak and have the drones still attack?
------------------------------
<Hammerhead> we can't do anything that requires programming

No, Levin, it's like when you warp away, drones stop responding.
I agree about the race bonus, these ships aren't made for fighting, bonuses for more damage or whatever are useless.
Bonuses like more agility and speed and warp core strength would be useful.
I have a question too, is it possible for gang members to warp to a cloaked covert ops frigate?

yes it is... did it just the other night. though it was to a cloaked scorp, not a frig... not that that would make any difference.

Hmm.. At this rate I will have to bump this thread every hour.. I wish a dev would give a quick answer, and share what they had in mind with the bonus. ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

I fly a buzzard and the ship seems like a nice indy\frig killer.
It has a 3/5/2 loadout.
I have covert ops skill at lvl 4 so the COCD uses 100 CPU to fit. That gives me 260 CPU and 31 grid remaining.
For hunting Indies i equip: hi-slots: 1x COCD 2x Standard missile launcher
Mid-slots: 1x 1mn ab 3x warp disruptor 1x web
low-slots: 1x aux powercore 1x ballistic control
It comes with a 25% Missile Kinetic Damage and Missile Launcher Rate of Fire Bonus which cause my Bloodclaws to do nice dmg. I just have to get the target to stay around long enough to finish him off.
It can also be used to lock down any ship as i could easily fit 3 or 4 race specific ECM mods or sensor dampners. i can lock anything 6 seconds after uncloak which is short enough where noone will even notice me unclaok before i have them locked.

Yeah, the bonus makes more sense for the Buzzard since, if it's ever going to be used in combat, it is going to be hit 'n' hide style tactics. This favours high missile damage, since you're not gonna want to stick around firing very long.
However, a drone bonus on a ship with a 100m3 drone bay is a bit of a joke really, especially when considering it will probably never use its drones anyway. Something more to do with moving whilst cloaked would be far more applicable to the covert ops class.
Oh yeah, anyone got a good price on a COCD?

I would still say that 9 out of 10 covert ops ships will never see combat, or at least combat alone..
Some better bonus really is needed.. Some good ideas have been listed here in this thread to. ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

Another bonus that might be more useful to Covert Op boats would be how long it takes for cloak re-activation (say you switch it off by mistake, or you've managed to dampen an attacking ship and need your cloak back NOW).
The time it takes before you can target after coming out of cloak would also be handy, if lessened by the Covert Ops skill level. Both of these advantages would be more useful to a Covert pilot who is likely to never get into the thick of the fighting, rather than some daft drone bonus.
However, I think speed/agility whilst cloaked is the one I'd like to see the most, perhaps a 5/10% boost to ship speed whilst cloaked per level - or something
