While trying out this fancy move (works great btw), my friend and I discovered this nifty trick:
If you position your ship just right and you hit an extremely critical part like the warp core or the fuel cells, it will result in a massive explosion, causing the ship to rip apart violently (this is what's commonly referred to at "instapopping"). If the explodiong ship is at least cruiser size, the resulting blast will cause severe AoE damage to nearby ships (I killed a bunch of my friend's drones this way>_<). Also, is the ship has more than 50% shield left, the resulting discharge of residue shield energy will cause a massive EMP-surge to spread out from the ship 1km for each shield HP left (awesome graphical effect). The blast will instantly drain the capacitor of nearby ships, so watch out!

It is unfortunate that this trick has gotten out. I have killed many even in high sec using this. With an interceptor and an MWD using WSAD mode I can even evade Concord.
Flanking is the most powerful pvp tool in the game. Nothing like a good flank gank.

Why is this utter crap still in W&T forum? True noobs will fall for this tarp. Obviously off-topic should be moved to "BS" forum.

Whenever someone tells you in a game to hit "ctrl + Q" or "ALT + F4" to get a cool feature, just ignore/block him and move on.

You would be surprised at the number of gm type figures in rookie channel that don't know about the wasd thing.. (asked one and they said there wasn't a wasd feature ingame)..
Out of curiosity is there anyway to convert the wasd movement to a joystick controled function?
P.S ty OP again

this guide is total bull****. flanking used to work but in RMR they patched it. the only way to get it to work now is to use a hex editor to modify the file LogServer.exe
open it in your hex editor of choice and replace the first three characters with value 00. flanking will now work.

Nope, they made it work again after apocrypha, no need for hex editor.

Confirming that flanking is indeed a viable tactic, not an exploit of broken game mechanics.

wow ctrl+Q. first off Will this is a classic. i praise your research efforts and those named in your post!!!
i would like to contribute. the ctrl+ Q "keystroke" as those of us involved in the game industry secretly refer to it as, is a very closly guarded secret. since you let the cat out, ill "trickle" some more helpful info on this subject. the keystroke actually works on many other games. i know this having helped develop many. you may want to try it on WOW or battlefield. in BF4 it actually releases the blue pill. in lay-persons terms. it freezes the server.
good to note some graphix cards will have a desktop crash as a result of using this key strokes. but its only about 70% of the time so keep trying.

STEP 3.
FIND A TARGET! - I don't think I need to explain this one, but a suggestion would be to load up your Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher with Xzibit probes for easy and fast scanning.
Overall this worked much better than my usual PvP tactics. (Though I did think 947m ISK was a bit steep for a Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher.)
However, I did encounter one problem. Commonly my target is disrupted in the conversion to WASD mode. Since the Overview isn't useful in WASD keypad mode, I need to see him to retarget. Alas, when I emerge in WASD mode he is often hidden behind my desktop teddy bear and the Xzibit probes seem to be line-of-sight. Have you found a workaround for this situation?

Just one question: Should I hit ctrl-q before or after I've been webbed and scrambed/disrupted?

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 20/04/2009 23:48:53 Uh ... one tip to new people ... not that there are that many new people in this forum ... but if you are going to try out a new tactic - it is advisable to try it out against the weakest opposition you can arrange and in a ship that you don't mind losing.
Getting into trouble in your big expensive mission ship you just put every ISK you had into and then deciding "Oh! I think I'll try that tactic I read on the forums!" is a recipe for disaster.
The best way - is to get a person from your corporation to go try it out with you. Being in the same Player Corporation (not NPC) will let you shoot at each other with out Concorde Intervention. That is an ideal way to test your tank and any tactics you may be thinking of using. You and your corp mates can practice on each other before going somewhere that your opponents won't stop firing once they've got you all shot up, not to mention podding you when they pop your ship.
Now - to take my advice on that - in case you don't believe me - get you and your corp mate in rookie ships and go shoot each other and see what happens. Don't worry - Concorde won't pod you.
OBTW, here's a video of me and my buddy Crimson Claws Practicing the Flanking Maneuver in our Rookie Ships.
