Edited by: William DeMeo on 22/03/2009 00:30:33 Edited by: William DeMeo on 22/03/2009 00:26:01 Hello! First an introduction:
I'm William DeMeo, often labelled by my friends and foes alike as the "Lion of the North" (After King GUSTAVUS II ADOLPHUS of Sweden), I have vast PVP experience (thus the nickname) and have been known to fly with such great pvp'ers as CHED (IRC might know this guy) and NEXUS KINNON who also is a regular poster on these very forums.
Anyway, today I thought I'd let you guys in on a little trade secret that has given both me, CHED and NEXUS KINNON many good kills and helped us win many exciting PVP encounters. Namely, FLANKING!
Flanking is a commonly overlooked tactic in PVP, not often mentioned in patch notes it is a feature that dates all the way back to 2003, to the release of the game. Long thought to be broken, through vigorous testing me, CHED and NEXUS KINNON have confirmed that flanking is a working and viable tactic.
But, why should you flank?
Many EVE players don't know, but on the side of the EVE ships all the vital components (such as the engine, warp drive, stra***ometer, hydraulics and oxygen tank) are located. Therefore, if you position your ship in a 90 degree angle from the opponents ship and fire straight into his side the game will register every hit as hitting a "critical part" of your enemies space vessel. In plain English; every hit will register as a "critical hit".
This, of course, will increase your DPS output CONSIDERABLY. CHED's rifter has been known to put out OVER 600 dps (overloading). Not only that, but every hit will also slightly hurt your enemies capacitor (because the capacitor turnpike gravimetric consumption engine, CTGCE, is located there). The loss of capacitor power can be simply be explained by this formula:
C = H X 2
Namely, with each HIT from your guns the enemy loses TWO points of capacitor. This may seem like a small amount, but it can be very useful in long, drawn out frigate fights, and here's the kicker - Against battleships this cap loss is increased by 500%!
By now you're probably thinking "all this difficult math sure seems wonderful, but how do I apply it in combat?"
Simple!
STEP 1.
Hit CTRL + Q. A common misconception is that ships in EVE can't be controlled with the WASD keys. CTRL + Q will take your ship out of boring "point and click" mode and put you in fun, fast-paced WASD mode. This is absolutely VITAL when positioning yourself in that perfect 90 degree angle you need to get the flanking bonus.
STEP 2.
Buy and fit a "Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher". You cannot find these on the market but they are farmed from complexes and are relatively cheap, I personally sell them so convo me if you need one. So what will this scan probe launcher do? Well, it will react with your ships CTCGE and hydraulics system engaging the SHARPSHOOTER system which works by automatically sending out 1000-2000 small, invisible, probes that help your targeting system locate the vital spots you want to hit on your enemies ship. Due to the hydraulics system, it will also make your ship bounce (spacebar).
STEP 3.
FIND A TARGET! - I don't think I need to explain this one, but a suggestion would be to load up your Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher with Xzibit probes for easy and fast scanning.
STEP 4. Manually position yourself in a 90 degree angle on either side of your enemy's ship, once you reach a 90 degree angle you will start to notice the damage increase. This may take some practice, so I suggest practicing this with your friends before you try to do it in a REAL PVP combat engagement.
STEP 5. Sit back, relax, and enjoy watching yourself pwn every killboard in the galaxy.
Sidenotes:
Mods, I think this is the first guide on flanking in PVP, could this be stickied?
And any donations will obviously be accepted with a big smile
Sincurely yours, William DeMeo. Yarr |

Well then, if you open such confidential data I perhaps shall add there mine. This is really strong one. You see, if you are cloacking and flanking at same time, it would do the best trick in game. Approach as close as you can while cloacking, and then quickly uncloack and shoot from flanking position. The formula shows just how powerfull this trick is: C= (H X 2)^A X 1000! where A is number of your turrets/launchers 1000! - multiplier, nwm this

You forgot to mention hiding behind walls. The most viable tactic so far against people that use missiles is to hide behind a station or someone else. Then you just pop out of the cover of your wall, shoot all your guns, and then hide again. After this you just need to wait till his missiles hit the structure or person you're hiding behind, then just repeat! He cant hit you but you can hit him!

If you notice people using this tactic against you a lot (and they will), it's important to find some countermeasures.
The best way is to counter it actively. Moving in a straight line or orbit is too predictable and will result in them easily hitting your vulnerable systems. To counter it, constantly change your ship heading by clicking or turning randomly. While you won't move very far in space, this motion will make it much harder for your opponent to obtain the perfect 90% angle to the side of your ship.
In addition to this, reinforcing your critical ship systems to make them less vulnerable to this tactic is also effective. Reinforced Bulkheads, available on the market, are useful for this role. These reduce the impact of wrecking hits by 75%, so if your opponent is hitting for nothing but wreckings (a 200% bonus to damage), you'll have reduced their overall DPS to (100+200)*0.25 = 75% of their initial output!
Finally to counteract the cap draining effect, don't use cap boosters - they have more ammo than you have cap boosters. Instead, fit cap rechargers and capacitor power relays. Even better, fit many of those and a cap battery or two of the largest type available. This will make your enemy's pathetic attempts to drain your massive capacitor buffer laughable.
In summary, to counter flanking: a) constantly and randomly change your heading b) fit reinforced bulkheads c) fit capacitor batteries, rechargers, and power relays __________________________________

The graphics switch required to engage WASD mode is a lot more intensive than normal mode, so if you are having trouble maybe trying getting the newest drivers from your vendor or perhaps buy a new graphics card?
Good luck!

If you recently purchased an EVE account with access to carriers, this effect is for carriers and dreadnoughts and will garantee a successful solo engagement of enemies ranging from the 20-50 man numbers. Simply burn away from the station 10km and proceed to enter fast paste WADS mode.

Hey..
I have a problem with WASD mode.. Everytime i try to switc to it, eve crashes.. i have a new graphic card, gtx i belive, and the newest drivers i think.. and yet it crashes everytime.. I dont know if its a error in eve, or maybe Directx or something? I have made a petition to check if its a possible bug.. will let you know when i get a response from a gamemaster..
I find it hard to use the flank tactic though, but it seems like i do more damage overall with flanking.. i have gotten more of the wrecking hits i think, but i have to do some more testing.. or maybe just get better at flanking
i cant find that brotherhood scan launcher, and when asking in help channel, someone mentioned i might be looking for a sister launcher i might have lost the meaning in that context, but why would i need a sister launcher? i love my sisters
and is the a module that will allow me to check how much capacitor the pirates have left, as i have no idea about how much capacitor my turrets damages on them

actually it is DEADLY serious. in case you have troubles with entering WSAD mode, try to run some FPS game like Counter Strike or Uneal Trournament 2k4, which supports this mode natively, this helps a lot to keep EVE stable for WSAD mode. Just make sure your move keys are binded to WSAD also in CS or UT2k4... __________________________________ I do it myyyy wayyyy... Milky Way. |

While trying out this fancy move (works great btw), my friend and I discovered this nifty trick:
If you position your ship just right and you hit an extremely critical part like the warp core or the fuel cells, it will result in a massive explosion, causing the ship to rip apart violently (this is what's commonly referred to at "instapopping"). If the explodiong ship is at least cruiser size, the resulting blast will cause severe AoE damage to nearby ships (I killed a bunch of my friend's drones this way>_<). Also, is the ship has more than 50% shield left, the resulting discharge of residue shield energy will cause a massive EMP-surge to spread out from the ship 1km for each shield HP left (awesome graphical effect). The blast will instantly drain the capacitor of nearby ships, so watch out!

It is unfortunate that this trick has gotten out. I have killed many even in high sec using this. With an interceptor and an MWD using WSAD mode I can even evade Concord.
Flanking is the most powerful pvp tool in the game. Nothing like a good flank gank.

Why is this utter crap still in W&T forum? True noobs will fall for this tarp. Obviously off-topic should be moved to "BS" forum.

Whenever someone tells you in a game to hit "ctrl + Q" or "ALT + F4" to get a cool feature, just ignore/block him and move on.

You would be surprised at the number of gm type figures in rookie channel that don't know about the wasd thing.. (asked one and they said there wasn't a wasd feature ingame)..
Out of curiosity is there anyway to convert the wasd movement to a joystick controled function?

this guide is total bull****. flanking used to work but in RMR they patched it. the only way to get it to work now is to use a hex editor to modify the file LogServer.exe
open it in your hex editor of choice and replace the first three characters with value 00. flanking will now work.

Nope, they made it work again after apocrypha, no need for hex editor.

wow ctrl+Q. first off Will this is a classic. i praise your research efforts and those named in your post!!!
i would like to contribute. the ctrl+ Q "keystroke" as those of us involved in the game industry secretly refer to it as, is a very closly guarded secret. since you let the cat out, ill "trickle" some more helpful info on this subject. the keystroke actually works on many other games. i know this having helped develop many. you may want to try it on WOW or battlefield. in BF4 it actually releases the blue pill. in lay-persons terms. it freezes the server.
good to note some graphix cards will have a desktop crash as a result of using this key strokes. but its only about 70% of the time so keep trying.

STEP 3.
FIND A TARGET! - I don't think I need to explain this one, but a suggestion would be to load up your Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher with Xzibit probes for easy and fast scanning.
Overall this worked much better than my usual PvP tactics. (Though I did think 947m ISK was a bit steep for a Brotherhood's Scan Probe Launcher.)
However, I did encounter one problem. Commonly my target is disrupted in the conversion to WASD mode. Since the Overview isn't useful in WASD keypad mode, I need to see him to retarget. Alas, when I emerge in WASD mode he is often hidden behind my desktop teddy bear and the Xzibit probes seem to be line-of-sight. Have you found a workaround for this situation?

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 20/04/2009 23:48:53 Uh ... one tip to new people ... not that there are that many new people in this forum ... but if you are going to try out a new tactic - it is advisable to try it out against the weakest opposition you can arrange and in a ship that you don't mind losing.
Getting into trouble in your big expensive mission ship you just put every ISK you had into and then deciding "Oh! I think I'll try that tactic I read on the forums!" is a recipe for disaster.
The best way - is to get a person from your corporation to go try it out with you. Being in the same Player Corporation (not NPC) will let you shoot at each other with out Concorde Intervention. That is an ideal way to test your tank and any tactics you may be thinking of using. You and your corp mates can practice on each other before going somewhere that your opponents won't stop firing once they've got you all shot up, not to mention podding you when they pop your ship.
Now - to take my advice on that - in case you don't believe me - get you and your corp mate in rookie ships and go shoot each other and see what happens. Don't worry - Concorde won't pod you.
OBTW, here's a video of me and my buddy Crimson Claws Practicing the Flanking Maneuver in our Rookie Ships.

Hit CTRL + Q. A common misconception is that ships in EVE can't be controlled with the WASD keys. CTRL + Q will take your ship out of boring "point and click" mode and put you in fun, fast-paced WASD mode.
----- OMGWTF bunch of BS! ROTFLMAO!
You know what's the worst part about it? I actually did log in the game to check what was my shortcut for CTRL+Q... obviously was QUIT GAME!
And for the noobs, heres a good guide!
Press 'ESC' button >> shortcuts >> read everything...

Anywayz, good joke, although i think that someone from CCP should come and delete this post or at least place a 'tag' saying it's fake info ^_^
Not that i would mind seeing noobs coming to low sec for the 1st time logging off when engaged lol, but still...if a target is doing that, he's not worth the kill. ^^
Btw, eve NEVER HAS BEEN ALWAYS POINT AND CLICK. THERE IS NO WASD CONTROLS FOR THE GAME.

Very ... informative post
I'm looking forward to your next post, where you should explain more advanced "Ctrl+Q" techniques, like loops, barrel-rolls , pumping and cranking . Maybe you could advance to flight tactics like dragging , brackets and single side offsets...
Free tip: Beaming (turning 90 degrees to the enemy's flight path)will break their lock, just like a successful ECM cycle !
