If your computer is tough enough to handle it, try using both compiz and EVE at the same time. I must say that using the cube rotate plugin to switch between EVE and a browser or some other application is soooooo much better/easier than alt+tabbing between EVE and these same programs on Windows.
Any other success stories with compiz and EVE?
For any interested in my setup: Intel Core 2 Quad 9450, overclocked to roughly 2.9GHz 4GB DDR2 RAM clocked at 800MHz Nvidia 9800 GTX+ Gentoo - kernel 2.6.28-rc1 KDE 4.2

See my sig.
Actually when I want top performance, I switch down to metacity as compiz overhead does impact fps a bit. (not huge anymore, but still a bit.)
I'm using twinview with 2x 24" lcd widescreens, so even with EVE "fullscreen" as it were, I've got the other monitor for other applications, so its not much different than having the cube (or the cylinder in my case.)

How did you setup your xorg.conf file for that? When I try and run EVE with my second monitor active, Eve renders at 3360*1050...and moves over to the right monitor. Makes playing kinda impossible.

EVE (wine) + Compiz has been working well here for > 3 years now.

If you're referring to my sig, then...I'm using twinview and not xinerama.
The twinview options allows for two "discrete" desktops. The screen shot itself was done as a "here's what it looks like" with just a single monitor and no spanning or 2nd monitor involved. A view of the way it looks in action: Home setup
