I'm having the same problem. However I can open a second client by running the ExeFile.exe from the bin folder. |

Don't close the launcher. If you keep the launcher open you can open multiple sessions.
HOWEVER ~
If you run multiple installs, like I do, and use them for various purposes, here's what happens: (this is just an example) * Install A runs account 1 + 2, install B runs 3+4+5 * You keep the launcher for install B open, now you can close/open as many accounts you want with install B * But here's the problem: when you want to log an alt or use install A again, you have to kill ALL active accounts using install A. In our example, we need to log off 1 + 2 just to be able to open that thing again.
For us multi-install, multi-account players this is completely batshit insane and completely breaking the game. The irony is: after d/t the game worked perfectly fine, then there was a 'patcher update' during the day that broke this. I.e. a small update to the patcher, nothing server related or major/important. Just a small damn tweak that has completely broke the game for zero reasons.
This is the dumbest thing that has happened to EVE since boot.ini Game is completely unplayable before this is fixed, as you can't log off and log alts on same accounts, or keep logging out/in without using the same install/keeping launcher open non-stop.
Don't think I ever been this furious over a game (just a damn game, hah) before, it's just ridicilous how retardedly gamebreaking such a minor unecessary tweak has been. I seriously hope this is fixed ASAP
Meanwhile / TL;DR-version: Only run one install, do not close launcher, and you'll be fine. DO NOT TRY TO CLOSE THE LAUNCHER (or try to run multiple installs and close/open different launchers). That "fixes" it, temporary. Meanwhile, say goodbay to all your alts you have spent time/isk/invested in. shiptoastin' liek a baws |

Confirming this issue. I ran bin\exefile.exe directly to get around the problem. |

Same problem here. If client is running it errors out when launching the launcher saying it can't patch.

Confirming this issue
Updated today, now can't run more than one client, just get this message:
The EVE launcher cannot update a directory in which processes are running. Please close the following process: exefile.exe
Running the repair tool does not fix this issue (simply meant I had to update the client again).
Second client can be launched if done so from the Eve\bin directory, bypassing the launcher, as others have suggested. |

Yep. That birthday cake already tastes stale.
This fine piece of software isn't able to do what launchers should do (manage multiple clients in various configurations, for instance), it seems its just a marketing sling, throwing CCP's adds and announcements upon us. And its so well written and tested that a simple changed ad breaks it.
-1 for the launcher group for being sloppy |

Thanks for typing what I was going to type.
This affected me too IMMEDIATELY after patching.

Confirming same problem after yesterday's DT. Now I leave launcher window open (check option not to close launcher after launching client), but it's annoying nevertheless.
Please fix. |

Same problem here.
I have set it to "Do not update unless there is a patch"
Someone suggested unchecking "Close launcher when eve is running" and launching multiple clients through the same launcher, but my launcher keeps closing after use, even when this is unchecked |

Thank you for reporting this guys, I've sent the Launcher team information on this issue as well as a link to this forum. It seems something in the launcher update released yesterday caused this, I just hope the Launcher development team manage to get this fixed as soon as possible.
As noted in the OP, you can start the second client from the \CCP\EVE\bin\exefile.exe to circumvent the launcher.

I have the same problem and on top of things I've placed all EVE-related programs in a sub-folder called programs. So every time I start the launcher I have to shut down programs like EFT and EVEMon as well :( But at least exefile-workaround works for now :) |

Also checking the box 'Skip launcher if no updates' in the launcher configuration screen bypasses this bug. |
