Looking at the base stats, it's a close call to determine whether or not the ship is intended for Armor tank or Shield. Both have very nice Kin/Therm resists, and are almost equal in HP. And the Mids and Lows are even as well.
In talking to a few folks, most seem to claim being able to do L4s with an Active Armor tank. So I cobbled one together in EFT, and wasn't terribly impressed. Defense and Effective HP were well below my current L4 Domi, though some say the signature and nimbleness makes up for that.
Then I looked in Battleclinic, and made a few modifications to their most popular fitting, which is a Passive Shield tank. They claim it can solo L4s and L5s. And with a bit of tweaking, I think they're right. By my calculations it has higher Defense, more Effective HP, and smaller signature than the Domi still, and moves twice as fast.
So... I guess I'm asking, how does everyone else fit theirs? Active Armor, or Passive Shields (since there's no viable options for Passive Armor, which I'd love to see someday).
And a side question... I've heard that orbiting a Jet Can will help alleviate DPS. I understand the complications of tracking that you're imposing. What I'm wondering is, for any given ship, what is the proper orbit? How far out, and how fast, before you see a healthy improvement?

hmm well this one is tricky but I have always had luck with dual MAR II's and an active tank with cap rechargers in the mids with a MWD II to keep it running. Using Ogre II's to do their deed has always worked and keeping the highs with some rails to shoot the little frigs or drone control units to help out. Since it's a drone boat you could also mix and match drones in your bay to see what works best.
When the Nano-Ishtar was all the rage I know people where shield tanking them but with the Nano nerf that may have changed. __________________

Edited by: VoiceInTheDesert on 23/03/2009 17:04:13 I have not used one of these for lvl 4s, but I've used it in 6/10 and 10/10 plexes...so same idea I assume.
Shields work nicely because you don't have to think about it. It will passive shield tank a reasonable amount of dps (anyone dealing EM damage will be a bit of a problem though). The problem with this setup is that LSE's increase your sig radius, which is a big reason you're flying a smaller ship. This will result in you taking more fire and your tank having to deal with more of the dps instead of just shaking it off with speed. Shield setup is also hard on your CPU (ishtar cpu blows), making it hard to fit tractors/salvagers. Also, obviously the shields take up mid slots that are better used on Drone Nav Links (You would not believe how much one of these will speed things up) and ABs
Armor works better in my experience. You can load up resistances to the 90s against most damage types (Kin/Therm can both be high 90s with the right mods/rigs). With resistance that high and assuming you're not sitting still, one repper will more than take care of any incoming dps that actually manages to hit you.
Yes, orbiting a jet can or wreck will greatly decrease the dps. To give you an idea of how much, when I run The Maze (DED 10/10), there is a citadel torp launcher in the last room.
When I'm stuck webbed at 5m/s or stopped (made that mistake once, never again), I get hit for over 5000 damage per missile (at 88% resistance). When I'm moving 50m/s, it gets knocked down to 2700. When I'm at full speed (190m/s), it's closer to 1300 When I'm running my AB (now up to 400ishm/s), I get hit for about 400.
It's not just missiles either. Large guns will hit you much easier if you're not moving...so move. Drop a can, orbit a wreck, whatever. Just keep moving and your incoming dps should be cut in half at least (assuming you're fighting a decent mix of large and small ships). As for distance, just orbit far enough away that you can maintain speed (I find that 5km works well).
EDIT: Do NOT use a MWD on your ishtar for missions. The whole point is lower sig radius. A MWD will bring in more dps that it dodges, especially when fighting missile ships.

If you're purely looking for a Mishtar, either shield or armor will work. I prefer armor myself, as it gives you more flexibility and mobility, but passive shield will tank more iirc.
I can run any lvl 4 safely in a single-rep Ishtar ... although I tend to switch between a Sentry-fit and a combat drone-fit. And yes, sig and nimbleness are the key here: battleships can't do sh*t to you when they can't hit you. Use lights to clean-up any tackler frigs, then deploy your sentries and orbit them, or deploy your heavies and orbit the field. You can even sentry tank to some degree if you plan ahead.
As for soloing lvl 5s, I would probably say passive shield Ishtar, and only against certain NPCs. Good luck.

FYI... I'm basically comparing something along these lines.
Passive Shield
Active Armor
And I have played with both in EFT, and noticed the speed and signature changes. If I were to go with Shields, which I'm heavily leaning towards just because of the rediculous Defense and HP, I'd also invest in a full set of Halo implants to cut down the Signature.
I also tweaked the passive shield setup, using more resistance mods and fewer Expanders. It actually raised the stats, and lowered the signature.
But as I said, a lot of folks keep recommending Armor, which has significantly lower Defense and HP. So I guess I'm just paranoid that I'd armor fit an expensive investment, and wind up popped. Versus shield fitting, and never worrying about damage again. |

On the shield setup: Yes, you can fit hardeners instead of expanders. The problem with that is you get rid of your already somewhat suspect buffer (ishtar base shield count is lame). Some lvl 4s will hit very hard and you'll want some buffer to keep from getting alpha'd.
On the armor setup: Fit a DC. I know the conventional wisdom is to fit two MARs, but I honestly dont think it's necessary any more since speed and low sig is now your best friend. A DC will give you a few more seconds if something goes wrong in addition to giving you a little more resistance to your armor/shield.

LOWS: MAR II DCII Armor Hards x2 (specific to mission) EAMN or extra mission specific hardener
RIGS: Auxillary Nano Pump Nanobot Accelerator (Only one MAR, you will be able to perma run it easily)
I'd be VERY surprised to see you get in trouble with that setup. I've tanked spawns of 10 BS and support craft with it without even breaking a sweat. The key is to just keep moving.
Final thoughts: The shield thing can work, especially with Halos...but how much money do you really want to invest in this? Armor is cheaper by far (especially factoring in those implants) and I'd argue that it performs just as well if not better in most situations (having a mid open for nav link, AB and being able to fit more salvage stuff).
Go with armor. :P

There is not much to argue. The passive shieldtank tanks more, and deals the same amount of damage. Active tank defeats the purpose of it being a lazymans mission mule, if you want to actively manage your tank you can get the Domi and do missions as fast as a Marauder.

I'm at work right now, so I don't have the EFT totals with me.
But toying with Armor vs Shield, versus the Serpentis template, and not factoring speed and signature into reducing damage...
My L4 Domi has about 90k HP, and 1000 Defense.
Ishtar (Armor) was something like 35k Effective HP, and 898 Defense.
Ishtar (Shields) were closer to 95k HP, and 1300-1400 Defense.
So I understand the Armor being more nimble, and the possibility of damage mitigation via Speed Tank. But I keep looking at those shield numbers, and wondering if I couldn't just float and absorb a whole room's aggro with 90% shields sustained or something.
I do agree though, that the skill training, and the implants, would make it a very large investment of time and ISK. While I can easily fit my L4 Domi now, and the armor fit isn't much different.
So I guess the concensus is that I shouldn't be worried about popping due to the smaller numbers. And if I do, I have a whole thread full of people I'll be coming to for reparations! ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif) |

Edited by: Marcus Gideon on 23/03/2009 23:16:54 Okay... made it home from work, and did some math magic in EFT.
None of these take implants into account. If I wanted to reduce the Shield Sigs further, I'd buy a set of Halo.
So what I'm seeing is... the Armor can fit a T2 AB, and get 450-500m/s. But it has significantly less survivability if it happens to get webbed or something, and the shots start to count. This is also fitting a single MAR II. If you replaced the EANM with another MAR II, and replaced an Aux Nano Pump with a CCC I, you'd get a stable Defense of 795.
The Shield is nearly equal to a Domi, and that's without me having much in the way of Shield skill right now. When you take All V (which I hate using because it's terribly unrealistic), then the Shield should be able to AFK-solo L5s without ever breaking a sweat.
The other thing I'm noticing, is Sentries vs Heavies aren't much different. Only 20 DPS or so. And you still have to take travel time into consideration.
Once again, I'm sorry if I seem to be a worry wart. But I'd really rather not invest in a ship only to lose it in the first WC4.

If you sit still with a sig radius that big (expanders), you will take a lot more damage that you want. Still probably not enough to break you...but meh.
Orbiting a can with armor rep going just seems easier to me. The extra mids lets you finish missions faster with the nav link and AB.
No, that setup wouldnt tank a 10/10. You need more buffer and logistics.
And the Ishtar has plenty of room for a mix of drones, take a bunch of different kinds.

I run L4s:
3x 200mm rail IIs, 2x salvagers (I find them occasionally convenient, and there's nothing else useful for the highslots)
AB, Painter, 3x Cap Rechargers MAR, DCU, EANM2, and 2 type specific actives. Rigs: CCC, and Aux Nano Pump.
Only time I really ever have trouble is the Angel-X bonus room. I need to pilot carefully at the start until I can winnow out the webbing frigates, and a couple of the missile launchers.
Being able to move is life and death. Anything that can web me dies INSTANTLY. I can trivially tank 30 battleships unencumbered. But if I get webbed, then 5 is lethal. I just pick the wreck of whatever ship explodes first, and orbit it at 5km. Let's me orbit at nearly full speed, and has enough transversal that stuff has great difficulty hitting at all. Missile damage from torps drops into single digits.

So yeah...
I'm definately gathering that most people feel a quick stepping Armor setup is more than adequate. Several folks have mentioned however, that if it isn't moving, it's toast. So Webs are the enemy.
The shield setup more than exceeds the HP and Defense of a Dual Rep Domi, which I know can just float and survive comfortably. And the signature radius is still lower than the Domi too. So it should be more than capable of sitting still and tanking. Plus it's still more nimble than the Domi, if you should decide to Orbit anyways.
I think I'm gonna try the Dual MAR first, and see how that fares. Then I'll drop down to a single MAR if it's surviving. I'm nowhere near trained on shields to pull off the All V setup anyways. But I was trying to get opinions on whether or not to waste the effort getting there.

I used to run lvl 4's in an ishtar myself. Once you have t2 sentries its the only way to go. You can orbit them at 5k or so to keep as close to max velocity as possible but if they get aggro somehow you can scoop quickly. I used the armor tank because firstly my skills are better for armor, but also i'm more comfortable armor tanking. Plus, its exciting to watch your armor go from 1/2 to full =)
If you decide you don't like using the ishtar however a sentry domi can be better as you can fit rails as well. More dps -> Faster mission -> More isk -> i like arrows.

And a side question... I've heard that orbiting a Jet Can will help alleviate DPS. I understand the complications of tracking that you're imposing. What I'm wondering is, for any given ship, what is the proper orbit? How far out, and how fast, before you see a healthy improvement?
