I just lost 3 cans to thieves yesterday. I was mining in .9 only 6-7 people in the sector I thought it was safe but i got robbed for the first time.
Is there some tricks to avoid theft when mining alone ?
I was thinking about secure jet cans with password, i could release 6-8 of them, full them and haul them. Will they be able to steal my stuff with a codebreaker ? Will the can disappear after 2 hours like a normal jet can ?
Thanks for your advice

Your safest bet to defeat ore thieves is to not use jetcans at all. Fill your hold, dock, unload, rinse, repeat. As far as secure containers (GSCs) You will need the Anchoring skill, they have to be 5km from any object to launch them, and they cannot be codebroken unless you use s stupidly simple password. As long as you anchor the GSC it will only disappear after 30 days of not using the can. I use a hauler on a second account, ore goes into the can and then right into the hauler. the higher security systems are not always the safest place to mine, as most ore thieves are looking for a quick score and stroke of the e-peen since they can't hack lowsec or nullsec. If you find yourself faced with an ore thief, don't give them the atisfaction. Put away your miner and go run missions for an hour, they will get bored and go away.

Most ore thieves are not really after the ore. They mostly will be putting the ore in their own ship and than jettison the ore again so you can pick it up. They hope you will steal it back so the agression counter is set and they can kill you without interferance of concord. That's what they are after..

Edited by: Friq on 25/03/2009 11:24:40 Also note that Secure Cans can't be Anchored (and password-protected) in 1.0-0.8 space, as one can flipper so nicely informed me after robbing my Sec Can.

Oh well, live and learn.

Yeah, as someone experienced in the trade, it's probably a good idea to make sure that you actually anchor those secure cans (requires 0.7 and down if I remember right). Otherwise, the thief can just warp in with an industrial and scoop your cans. You won't even get kill rights if he does that.

Best way to avoid the flippers: move to another system with less people.
In the current system I'm mostly mining in, at peak there are 8 people. Typically there are 3, counting me.

No secure container in .8 to 1.0 ??? Why Concord doesn't intervene in .8 to 1.0 for can flipping, just boost the response delay since the infraction didn't cause death. At least we would get some kind of justice in the safe sectors ! It seems way too easy to steal lone miners, it should be more difficult to steal in .9 and 1.0.
I'll sitck to dead space mining until my drones are strong enough for .7.

1st point, CCP doesn't think players deserve to jetcan mine in peace. Jetcanning wasn't intended for that use, but as William Gibson says... The street has its own uses for things.
2nd point, 3 Hobgoblin 1s have never failed to handle 0.7 rats for me. No uber drone skills needed.
I have never been in fear with 5 Hobgoblins in 0.5, and get the feeling I could probably survive 0.5 with fewer.

My view is against jet can mining in open space.
If you mix mining and mission running a good idea if to jet can mine the ore you sometimes find in them. Its not 100% safe as you can still be scanned down. however it is many times safer.

You could easily fit a Hulk to permatank 0.5 rats...although drones seem to chew them up quite nicely

Train to fly an Orca. Park the Orca, mine into it while you are flying your Hulk.
Jetcan flipping problem solved!
Alternately, if you're worried about your 500M ISK jetcan being stolen, train an alt to fly the Orca, or find a friend who flies an Orca.

You say Jet can mining.. I say crating obstructions to the space lanes.
One must understand, you chose to jettison cargo, thus it no longer remains yours. It is in fact fair game to any who wander by, and many pilots tired of paying higher insurance premiums for garbage banging into their ships, scratching the paint and breaking comm array's, have begun to clear the space lanes.
Walk about a station, and spot a $50,000.00 ISK credit voucher on the floor, you really gonna stop and ask who dropped it? __________________

If the jettison cargo no longer remains mine, how come they "steal" from it and start flashing red ?

size of astroids >>> size of can
however when people start using GSC to avoid flipping, then we suddenly have 30 of those cans in each belt. So the alternative to jetcanning is actually worse on lag than the honest jetcanning miner who's making less isk/hour in his retriever than he would if he was ratting in nullsec in a t1 frig.

Mining needs a huge buff, the isk you make is awful compared to missions or ratting. Give miners decent mining missions or npc buy-orders that they can dump their ore at for a reasonable price, thus increasing the demand and price of ore sold to players.

Plenty of nice fat asteroids in combat missions. Seems a bit unfair, doesn't it :)

Guess that is the price you pay for sitting there doing nothing but eating roids. We could keep talking about this all day but you're too busy reading my sig instead.
