OK, so the nebula thing is way overdone in EVE. Look more like clouds. Feels like Im rather flying through multicolored skies than space.
BTW...space is mostly black and nebula dont look like clouds.

Um yes, except when you realise the whole eve "galaxy" is actually a tiny cluster of stars within such nebulas and the like are extremely common.

P.S. What we see is generated by our Pods so we dont go insane.
Perhaps, but for a space based game...it sucks.

Edited by: Sirial Soulfly on 28/03/2009 09:07:14 Completely agree its way too fluffy, would love to see some real space and ccp have acknowleged it as well as they plan to redo the backgrounds at some point its on the 'to do list' aka 'soonÖ
So I guess in a year or 2.

Parts of space do look like EVE space.
Earth is in a pretty barren part of the Milky Way.

actually, some of the nebula pictures thats been taken does resemble the backgrounds in eve.
I dont know the science behind them, but there might be a bit too many fluffy elements in the eve universe.
1 or 3 small clouds/nebulas would be okay, but those long rings that kind of circle around the whole system is a bit too much :P

I would rather see a 50/50 split between a dark star field and nebula backgrounds. The best of both worlds that way, and would make the nebula more interesting, rather then being overdone, as they are now.
Btw, as far as my limited understanding goesàin reality you don't see nebula in colour as per the famous hubble pictures. Those are multiple images layered, each image is taken specifically to measure a certain wavelength and from that infer what materials the clouds contain.

Nebulas in space are pretty much the same as clouds. They come in different shapes and sizes, and there's nothing at all stopping all the stars in the EVE cluster being smack bang in the middle of a very nebula-rich portion of the universe.
Of course, given the option of gaudy pink clouds filling up space, versus empty black - I'd take the empty black. Most of the nebulas are dull or include some black space so I'm not complaining too loudly. As long I still have some dark background for the module buttons, to see which ones are active and overheated, I'll only be complaining very softly.

Reflection nebulae tend to be blue, emission nebulae tend to be red. However, green and yellow nebulae also exist.
That pretty much covers all of the nebulae we see.
It will be lovely when systems are set into a common 3D skybox, apparently coming SoonÖ
Oh, and nebulae are clouds of gas or plasma, and they are blown around by wind. So as such resemble atmospheric clouds.

i honestly dont mind the nebula, but i would like to see maby a check box to disable them if you want to. i remember when we had that map glitch where it would make all the nebula go away, gave ever a totally different feel for me

Yes but it doesnt take away from the fact that a space based game should have some...empty space.

Yes some of the renders from Apocrypha look more like atmospheric flight than space flight (namely, this one and this one, for example.) I think the main problem is that the nebula clouds in those renders are whitish and not colored, like you might see in the picture that Arthur Frayn just showed:
Originally by: Arthur Frayn Look at the silly clouds in space!
(Look how the clouds are bright red.) I don't know why CCP choose to put whitish nebula clouds. Maybe Torfi can answer that. But if you are near or in the middle of a nebula, space is not at all black. We are just too influenced by some sci-fi movies on that respect.

The funny thing is that all the multicoloured hubble images of nebulae we see posted around the internet are false colour images. CCP seem to have based space backgrounds on them.
However, some nebulae look quite pretty in true colour too. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

Completely black background, with maybe one nebula that you can see far away that's always in the same direction.
The odd system and wormhole space should have the pretty backgrounds + weird visual effects, and this would make some appear so much more awesome. ------
