This is not a snarky response to you. It will just seem like one. If you don't know, on your own, don't bother. Firstly, I hope you didn't buy one and then start looking for this solution. You'd be surprised how many people do this. Next, it is a rare person that will actually tell you what is profitable to do. At least in a public venue. Why you ask? Because telling you here is telling everyone in eve at the same time. Immediate profit killer right there. My suggestion: Social network inside the game. Develop relationships with people like minded to your activities and never avoid brainstorming or partnering. I strive to never fail at mental fair trade. Not saying I'm the smartest, not saying that the ideas I put on the table are as good (or better) than the other participants. I'm just saying that always strive to give as much in kind, in collaborating, as you receive. Follow my suggestion: You'll get richer, faster, and in more than just isk. My $0.02

Note that sometimes it's better to reprocess it and sell the minerals (depending on your location).

Well, it takes all of like 2 weeks to become a freighter pilot. And a billion is only two GTCs away.
Not much of a wonder people get stuck at step 3 of
1. Roll freighter pilot 2. Sell GTC to buy freighter 3. ??? 4. Profit!
My suggestion is talk to larger empire mining corps. See if you can buy freighterloads of lowends from them at .2 PU or so below jita prices.

I would say this :
1. Roll freighter pilot 2. Sell GTC to buy freighter 3. Buy low in system X 4. Sell high in system Y 5. Profit!

Is there any way I can effectively make money off it, or am I pretty much stuck just having those skills until I'm in a corp that needs it? Bulk hauling. Learn to trade. Get your accounting/broker relations/margin trading skills up.
I can make about 150M a week just shuffling crap around intra-region. If I was a full-time trader and ran between the trade hubs as well I could make far more than that.
You need to double down and do this:
1) get the 5% agility implant so you warp faster 2) train all agility and cap ship skills to level 5 so you warp faster 3) get an alt and sit the alt in the "quad" or "tri" systems... These systems are the stars that boarder on three regions. For example, you can find a system that is inside of ONE jump of forge, domain, and citadel. With an alt in a shuttle, you can quickly check the price of ANY trade good and then send the freighter to the best possible price... This helps a lot with new freighter pilots and isk...
4) get an alt or the freighter pilot a blockade runner skill
With this, you use the blockade runner to zip in and out of low sec with NPC goods. Once you get 50000 or as many as you want, then the freighter picks them up and then goes afk to the high sec sell point. Many NPC goods make a lot more isk this way...
5) get the alt with a fast ECM ship like a falcon... With this advanced step, you move the freighter to low sec 1-2 jumps, dock, and load up 700 000 M3 of trade goods. Then the alt scouts the freighter back to hi sec, from there u go afk until you sell your stuff. With this you can easily make 50-75mil isk per run in your freighter. Obviously its risky...
6) start funding low sec hubs with t2 ships... Once you get the hang of low sec trading, you start moving in t2 ships into low sec with your new fat wallet... For example, move in 10-20 stealth bombers or 3-5 recons. Train up remote sell orders so you can monitor the trade from hi-sec... This lets you move in goods into low sec, and then come out with 700 000 m3 of NPC goods...
7) start monitoring courier orders... There are many legit courier orders that require a freighter. For example, a manufacturer might have 6 orders of 100000m3 at a station to move 20 jumps. You take all 6 in the freighter and afk them back to hi sec 30 jumps. When you dock, cash them in...
8) learn to triangular trade... Once you get your NPC trading well done, trade in three regions--NPC good A, sell in region B, buy NPC good B, sell in region C, buy NPC good C, and sell in region A. This nets an easy 50-100mil isk per round trip, almost all afk and in high sec... Personally we keep a google document and everyone updates it with trades so we can quickly direct a freighter pilot online to the best trade
9) move to a jump freighter... This is so uber for NPC trading that it is broken, but so many people don't have one or are too risk-adverse to using it that it is just free isk for the bold and well-capitalized.
What you do now is use an alt and jump the freighter 6-10 jumps into a low sec system and load up on NPC goods, then you can get someone at the gate to hi-sec. You jump right to that person and jump to hi sec. Bingo! 10 jumps of low sec for zero risk and ur plus 100mil isk.
The key to this is "stockpiling"--when u are well capitalized, you put 50000m3 of whatever trade good u want right after downtime and whenever the price resets to the low low sec price. When you have 600 000m3 or a freighter load, you move in the j-freighter. After about 2 weeks of this, you'll have a j-freighter load or two daily...
Freighter Insurance for High Sec? A hauling alt of mine just trained his way into a freighter. Do any of you folks that fly freighters in high-sec insure your ships? I plan on following the "keep your value down" rules and the alt is safely tucked into an NPC corp so he won't have problems with war decs. I'm j

Very well written, and Fritz (Sorry if name is off some, we all know I suck with those) has a pretty good understanding of most aspects in Eve like this. The issue with that is it will make you a killing in the long run, it will also take you a lot of time, reserach, and isk to get going.
If you have the things I mention above then this plan is sound, if you don't advertising is the key way to go. Advertise your freighter service anywhere and anyway you can. Ignore those in channels that say get out, if they block you they didnt need your services anyway so does not hurt you.
If your doing this hauling with your main account, I suggest a second account. I run my account afk in the background almost 24/7. It works great because it does not stop me from my RL / Eve Fun, but I am making okay isk at the same time.
Services are isk makers, just figure out a service you can offer with your freighter. -----
