I was thinking a way of bringing back the industrialist profession, which nowadays is almost considered the same as the trader. In fact it is not. Also courrier missions from NPC or player are frowned upon, mainly because of the limited rewards. This is mainly because many people consider the time or the effort of transporting goods as "free".
This will sounds very bad and maybe it is. Anyway here goes:
Add a small fee in jumping through a standard gate. This fee should be similar in cost to the amount someone pays for the isogen to jump a capital ship. But it shouldn't require fuel to be in the cargo bay (so we don't wreck havoc on the isogen market and open the gates for more suicide attacks)... or if you people think so, it should.
Also this will encourage people to use the wormhole system to avoid paying this new tax, if they can use a couple of wormhole systems to bypass 30jumpgates.
It will also remind people that traveling isn't free. It will make local markets more profitable, since people will stop considering a travel to jita "free". That should help an industrial make a small amount, for every trip someone else would rather not.
Truth be told, I haven't thought it out very much. Like how it will affect mineral prices or new players with limited funds to start with, or for example the shuttle market, that has recently come to be. So if you think this is a stupid idea, it might just as well be so.

Not sure how this idea would bring back the industrialist profession. As with something like ammo, once you make enough money, you can ignore that expense and traveling becomes "free" again.
If anything, they should make more interactive industrialist missions. They should give you a BPC, and you have to get the materials and make said item to give back to the NPC for a nice reward that well covers the cost of making the item. Something like that may help more.

Firstly, capitals dont use "isogen" to jump, they use "isotopes".
But i digress, any sort of fee that starts to effect a capsuleers wallet would destroy any npc businesses who use the gates constantly. Capsuleers are basically the richest people within the eve galaxy, only the super rich, such as ourselves even trade in ISK, because it is the currency of the super rich.
Additionally, i doubt the empires would want to stifle trade by adding such an arbitrary fee to those who import and export their goods around the galaxy, this would hurt trade and markets for the empires.

Edited by: Sky Lunartakker on 29/03/2009 11:14:30 A Gate-Fee would explain, why the Gate-Owners build these giants, and how they get financed.
- Jumpgates bring a fee to each occupant (allies/factions) - a great Isk-sink Eve might need - right, each local trade-hub would get more importance - trading (I¦m a trader) would get a bit harder - the fee¦s are different - in the own faction regions it is cheaper than at enemy faction space - ..and why haven¦t that been implemented years ago? ,-)
That¦s by far NOT a stupid idea =)

this all depends on how much would have to be paid, if its not enough then it will still remain "free" to much and those with little money will be bound to one system. Immensea |

Idiotic idea, and traveling is not free, if one preffer to make 30jumps to save 500k isk, its his will. Also gates were made for they same reason we got roads in real life, and maintenance cost of them is covered by taxes.

Please resize sig to a maximum of 400 x 120 - Mitnal lemme go for that 8 pixels - val |

Toll between regions might work, or not. Can't really know for sure unless we try it.
