For any devs reading this, are all of these bug reports from people using Vista?
The only time I've ever had this error was a brief stint using Vista and I'm lead to believe it was because of the (cant remember the name) Had to use this command before I ran eve otherwise i'd get that error about every 20 mins: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled __________________

I have the socket closed problem now and then and I'm running XP with latest service packs and patches. Definitely not just a Vista issue.

I haven't had this problem since I subscribed to the Help channel with my two characters. I still get disconnects (separate issue), but no socket issues.

VPN tunneling. try it, may works.
I am also experiencing horrific packet loss (constant 20-40%) at telecity while running the ping trace. Whats this VPN tenneling you speak of as it seams this may be the source of my problems...

Managed to replicate this quite easily by letting my ship sit docked and not do anything for 10mins then try to load the regional market. Had Logserver and Ping Plotter running and submitted a bug report with said files. Unfortunately as the singularity client won't install no matter which way i download it i had to do it on Tranquility. Hope it helps at least a little, i'm dying here lol

I want everyone to know that I was running a Belkin wireless N router and had the constant socket closed error. So much so that I was scared to do many things like fight rats or go into 0.0
I have changed to a new router (not belkin) and Have not been disconnected yet (about 24 hours so far) I will update if I run into the problem with the new router.
If you are using a belkin and getting the socket closed error let us know!

I'm getting these lately, only really after Apoc. Several times a day, nothing has changed on my end. I have contacted my ISP to see if anything is at fault at their end... ---

Edited by: Liang Nuren on 09/04/2009 18:08:08 This happened to me last night on TQ, but the problem was almost certainly packet loss on my end because Vent also crashed. It's happened a few other times without any other noticeable problems, and it happens to a corpmate while I'm running a steady conversation on vent with him. I'm running Vista, 2 clients, Vent, and sometimes a firefox on AT&T Edge (Cellular data) service.
-Liang
Ed: It only happens to me when I try to load a lot of data (opening market or jumping into a new sytem). Maybe it's an artifact of packet loss with lots of data being suddenly thrown at the user. -- Liang Nuren - Eve Forum ***** Extraordinaire www.kwikdeath.org |

Less than 40 bug reports have been received with the information we have requested. Based on this and our connection graphs it is clear that this issue has affected a small number of users from different parts of the world.
LOL.... do you guys even play your own game?
The only way we have been able to do that so far is by artificially creating packet loss of 30% or higher, this would indicate an issue with the userÆs connection as opposed to our software or hardware. Some of the reports we have received however hinted at other possibilities that we want to explore fully before completely closing the door on this.
LOL... again... do you even play this game?
You might want to consider whether maybe you're not getting responses because people are so frustrated with how useless filing these bug reports has been historically. I know that I personally have found the "tech support" experience with CCP to be highly annoying. As is, there's very little communication from our perspective... and lots of annoyances like discovering that your report was simply tossed because some element was missing, and that was never communicated back to us. Worst of all... the loop is never closed. Fixed or not, there's no communication back to the bug reporter... even when it's obviously needed.
I know that I personally saw your request... that I've been having trouble with crashes and socket drops, despite a top notch connection, with monitoring tools that validate such.... basically I'm the type of person that you sent your request to.... but I simply never considered responding because of how frustrating communications with you guys are. If one gets burned you dont run to touch the stove real fast.
After all... you only got 40 bug reports... it must be a non-issue that you can just write off. Surely the large number of posts in the forums regarding these problems must be figments of the imagination... there couldn't possibly be any other reason why you get so few bug reports.... surely nothing like a system that's hard to work with and frustration with previous poor experiences re: the process

I don't know if this will help as a trouble shooting aid or not, but for what it's worth...
I've been trying to solve a really wretched socket-closed issue (I can't stay connected for more than a few minutes) and to that end I've been running PingPlotter in the background to try and track down the underlying fault. Maybe it's just me and my situation, but so long as PingPlotter is active, my connection to the game is rock solid. (One disconnect in something like 10 hours of play.) The moment I turn PingPlotter off, the disconnects immediately start again.

I've also noticed that having pingplotter running increases stability somewhat, but unfortunately no where near as much as it has for you. Ready to top myself...

Edited by: Danica Calisto on 12/04/2009 12:15:08 I am starting to wonder whether legal action based around "failure to comply with terms of paid subscription content" is a thing anyone is considering atm?
I for one have been researching into this problem for a while now, and the fault mainly seems to lay with poor quality traceroutes to CCP's servers... eg. a poor telcity, godaddy (most seem to be around hong kong, or london) server causing massive amounts of dropped packets from said servers (my personal packets lost was around the 70 - 80 percent mark at one stage), amounting to dropouts ranging from seconds, to minutes, to hours depending on the users traceroute path.
Most seem to be Vista, or service pack XP users, in southern Earth areas (a few northern hemisphere as well, it seems now), most of who are on particular high end ADSL or ADSL2+ connections.
I for one, being an Australian, pay upward of $25 AU a month to play EVE, and have been throwing my dollars down the drain since NOVEMBER 08 (Yes, count it CCP... that's 5 WHOLE months!) suffering this packet loss issue, with socket disconnections now ranging between 2 to 5 minutes of game time before crash to login.
You (CCP) were able to put your efforts into releasing another fine upgrade to your servers, and yet another fine expansion pack... with the same buggy issues included? People are still complaining about issues 5 months after they originally surfaced!
I certainly hope that CCP will be recompensating those players who reported the dropouts, in some manner. I have been playing EVE faithfully since 2003, and feel somewhat jaded that my 3 VERY lengthy petitions have so far been met with "we're working on it", "ask your ISP what their problem is" or "we can't help".
We have established that it's not our ISP's! We have established that it is not your faithful subscriber's machines!
We have all heard the run-around answers before!
What exactly are we paying you for CCP?
Edit: Just thought I would add that, while typing this forum post up, my eve connection dropped twice! And not once did I even get a second of dropped connection, nor even a slight crackle, in the Ventrilo alliance chat that I was talking in the whole time! |

I guess my post isn't much help but I had maybe 2-3 socket closed problems throughout the first 5 months or so of playing eve, and none since this patch. I do however get client errors that cause Eve to close maybe 2-3 times a day which doesn't bother me that much (usually when I click on assets or the market).

I use 2 computers, 1 with vista and 1 with xp. Problem happens with both. My pings are crap, about 220-240 ms. My problem seems to be so bad that when I open a second connection, it will shut my first one down with socket closed. It also does as others report, when jumping through a gate, or when pullin gup jita market orders.

yeah i've been getting socket closed for a couple days now. Some DP around my area prolly got fubared somehow and my internet is being crappy (can hardly access the isps DNS server, been using openDNS for a while...). Because of that I've been having about 30/40% packet loss while still keeping 8Mbit stable downloads (odd i know!). And though such packet loss usually sucks for online games, it mostly affects FPS games (being slow and jumpy) and EVE(not working)!! All other MMOs I've ever tried (lots during my eve playing time) don't react remotely like that (none have anywhere near 50k connections at any given time!).
So could be an assortment of factors, pushed to visibility by a high packet loss. Something server side isn't reacting well to it, something in the routing hubs can't handle losses with that many connections, something else or just a combination of all three.
It's like the need for speed initiative just went and said, "Well, unstable connections clog our network, so just screw them! ".

Eve working without any problems related to connection before patch - check No changes in provider / service since a year - check Every other software 'n games requiring constant connection - check (incl Guild wars for example, vent, skype, etc etc)
Lag problems after patch - check, this was considered as a regular issue (my third expansion since i joined eve) Connection problems AFTER apoc - check. First - random disconnects. Later on, till today - after launching EVE for the first time@ home, i need to reconnect 3-6 times, random moments, socket errors mixed up with application crash ('memory could not be read/written').
Memcheck - done Reinstallation of entire drivers set, system cleanup, reinstallation of eve client, emptying game cache - all check.
Sorry CCP, but it's not my fault, either not fault of internet provider. While everything else works fine I cannot blame anything but Eve after patch. Am I right? While it's not a big deal when mining/trading, i stopped making any missions. I got used to 'patch times', when we need to wait few weeks for You to stabilise everything, I know we play most complicated game on most sophisticated server... But patience is slowly going away...still slowly...but.. fun factor gets worse and worse. I just hope you will manage this. RGDS, Kara

Ok CCP i am 3 seconds from commiting murders. I have just setup EVE on a different computer, with a different version of windows, with a different router, with a different internet connection, with a different service provider, from a different location, AND GETTING EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM.
So in conclusion: NOT A CLIENT SIDE PROBLEM - ball in your court.
Interestingly it was god damn telecity again screwing me over, how bout getting a list of the problem locations and re-routing? It seems to be the same few.
Who else is getting telecity issues and where are u located? I'm east-coast Australia

Well for my part;
I was getting tons of random socket errors. I could play for 3 hrs and nothing, then all of the sudden I couldnÆt play more than 5 minutes with out getting disconnected 5 times in a row. Need less to say this drastically affected game play. I couldnÆt deploy drones, I always had to refit to perm run my tank ECT. Needless to say this was very annoying to corp mates as well.
So I decided to do some investigating of my own (client/network side). To make a technical and (to some) boring topic shorter, with the current build the network-client protocols seem to have been changed, with regard to latency. For most people this shouldnÆt be a problem.
HOWEVER; for the people using wireless routers in high EMI zones (Close to power lines ECT) this can be a serous problem. When a wireless router encounters high EMI interference then tend to ôburstö backlogged packets (some do more than others). In effect what you get is erratic connection loss. (Over very short periods of time)
Solution; in my case switching back to a hard line router for my gaming PC COMPLETELY ELEMINATED the problem. Since I seen the correlation of ôbursting packetsö and ôsocket errorsö, and switched back to a hard line router I have not had a SINGLE disconnect.
I canÆt promise this will fix other peoples problems. But if youÆre on a wireless router give it a try. And given other posts in this thread I strongly believe this is the root issue.
