So I finally got over my fear of trying curvy ships in papercraft and decided to make a Vexor. Sadly, this may be the last one I do for a while until I get access to another color printer.
Hope you enjoy it!

Exactly. It's a little too beautiful. The layering to get the raised details with the correct textures and the shiney varnish sheen are possible but would take some major artistic talent. Not to be an arse but could the op take a few shots of it with some ordinary objects to get a sense of scale?

That is my first impression too. It looks too detailed to be a paper model, not to mention the pure white background with a seemingly perfect shadow cast.
On closer inspection though, the white background looks grainy enough to be a real photo, and I noticed there is a stand at the bottom of the photo. If it IS real, that has to be one of the best pieces of art I have ever seen.

Well it was a birthday present for a friend of mine, It lives near LA now. I'll see if I can have him send me a pic of it with his cat perhaps if you want a scale comparison. :)

I was pondering how you did this.
I'm guessing OpenGL to get the textures and model, then you printed it on gloss photo paper (the shine effect), cut it out, folded/shaped it, and glued/taped?
I'm pretty new to EVE, maybe the models and textures are online somewhere. |

It's made of card stock. the shininess is from a spray glaze I apply afterward.

Thats a beautiful vexor. any reason why you didnt choose the Ishtar Skin ?
oh and thats a superb render. the spray you used really makes it authentic. and the curves just look perfect. any chance you could spry up the previous ships ?

My god.. simply fantastic! I was expecting something totally different when I clicked the thread... Your a genius!
Talk to CCP about selling build-your-own paper ships on the EVE store... you know with the "skin" already printed in high quality and a handbook on how to stick it together to make your own ship. Like for model planes and stuff. That way you'd only have to create the kit once and we can build them together ourselves... Like most of the table-top games.
Cheers

It's really great, do you have any pictures of half finished ships, different steps in construction?
Totally awesome, we want to see more!
What's that app you've been using to create the paper version shapes, there was a screenshot of a side part of the vexor inside, it just looks totally awesome too. Or do you use some ususal 3D app and make the cuts yourself? (looks like an incredible amount of work adding to the incredible amount of work that happens after printing)

Very nice! You have lots of patience.
Just so some of you know how it's done:
- He used Pepakura Designer to make the template. - He made a first cardboard model as a base. - He then applied a first layer of textures. - Then applied a second layer of texture cut to match armor to raise the armor. - He finally sprayed it wit a glossy finish.
I hope I got all the steps right. When I was in college we used to use an empty ballpoint pen to indent lines in cardboard models, and I thought at first you did something similar. But on closer inspection I saw that you used a 2 layer approach. It takes more time, but the results are stunning! Congrats.

For me: I print it out on 65lb card stock and use an X-Acto knife to cut.
I also use crafting glue you can find at any hobby craft store (Michael's) I use the Elmers brand clear crafting glue.
You will also want:
A straight edge metal ruler Some non-crimping pliers like the kind used in jewelery making some markers for any creases or areas where the print toner is worn off Some medical clamps or self-closing large tweezers to hold the pieces
Good luck!
