My recommendation, screw the guides. Download evemon, toss in what looks good and whats fun. This game is very very very open. Unlike other MMO's where it is "min/max or die", eve allows you to do what you want to do. Granted, certain things tend to work better than others, but there is no problem with having a little fun.
The best thing to do, is find what role you want to play, and then skill for it. The only "neccesary" skills are ones like engineering, electronics, capcitor skills, stuff like that. Don't get yourself tied down by some big long plan that someone else came up with.
For example. Right now, I am trying to learn to fly a carrier. Now, first thing, I need to have at least the prerequistes to fly it. I already have battleship V, so next for me is Drone Interfacing V, followed by jump skills that I need, which let me jump really far. Next, I wanna make sure it can survive, so I learn capital armor repair. Next, I wanna make sure my friends can survive, so I learn capital remote armor repair. Obviously , I want to use fighters, so I throw that in as well. And of course, I need the carrier skill itself. Now, I punch that into EVEMon, it spits out the efficient path, and I start training. In a few months I'll have my carrier.
So, lets drop it down in scale. You want to fly a drone ship. Lets say, a vexor, a good drone cruiser. Well, lets start off by throwing in the prerequistes, which is gallente cruiser. Now, you want to make your drones effective, drone durability, drone interfacing, and scout drone operation are good picks. It would be certainly worth it to get some T2 hammerheads. But, your ship isn't done yet, sure you have your drones, but what about the rest? You will wnat to beef up your tanking with armor repair skills and hull upgrade skills. But, what about the highslots? Maybe toss in some energy neutralizers, maybe some nos to boost your own cap a bit. Maybe you want to toss on turrets to add a little DPS, or maybe some drone link augmentors for a little more range. You decide. Do what suits you.
