Hello ! What do you think the cigarette tax is. My problem is with the amount
I spend 40 pounds on cigarettes a week guess how much of that is taxation - roughly about 80% so every month i pay an extra ú128 pounds extra on tax !!!!
Now a average gold Private health plan in the UK will set you back 100 pounds a month.
And let me tell you private health care in the UK is WAY WAY better then the state owned NHS. waiting lists are near non existent compared to months on the NHS . Hell at one time the doctor was worried that I had testicular cancer I waited 8 months to get a scan. The doctor operating the scan actually apologised tyelling me he was only one of TWO people n scotland opering under the NHS and the waiting queues were extremely long for everyone because all the specialist radiologist doctors had went private. I had a wart infection under my eyelid under the NHS i waited 9 months to get innefective treatment I went private and was seen to within a WEEK instant operation and problem never came back.on NHS i got a bottle of cleaning water by a doctor that didn't even use a eye scanner to investigate the problem.
So I propose screw government health care let all smoking tax go to a shared smoking private healthplan and let the non smokers take NHS help and die waiting for government help
Also take a look across Europe at which countries tax cigarettes and alcohol highly and which don't with One exception (Greece) countries that do have a NHS tax cigarettes highly countries that don't cant flipping AFFORD it now this is the entire healthcare for smokers and non smokers alike.
Also Phillip Morris presented a detailed economic report years ago to Poland basically showing what everyone else knew already Smokers die younger = less pensions to pay out + elderly care = overall enormous benefit for countries with high smoking %. Sure it was biased but the figures were simple and straightforward
So don't give me that Bullcrap about smokers cost the country money they don't they are a huge NET benefit. proven again and again by simple facts and figures. IF you don't believe me check out your countries income from Cigarette Taxation versus health care expenditure for smoke related diseases.

However, it's expensive, smelly, reduced my lung capacity, shortened my life and made me less attractive to the opposite sex.
The drawbacks far, far outweigh the positives.
It is expensive and whose fault is that ? It does reduce lung capacity, so does lack of excercise i am much fitter then all my non smoking friends then again they're fat lazy freaks and I am a cycling fanatic. shortens your life well I take a look at elderly care across the world and you know what?. Less attractive to opposite sex - Well since smoking ban and everyone smoking outside clubs I've got laid more then I ever did before, simply because it's such a mutually exclusive event for smokers girls and guys alike.
these things are all a matter of opinion however and debatable what isn't is the fact that my life is MINE ! I decide how I live it as long as I don't actively hurt anyone around me that don't agree with being hurt. then my life is freaking Mine and I abhor you and your kind that want to think you know better then me how I should live and use democracy to pressure how I live it by arbitrary law.
this is my third language so all you anglo-nasiz out there please excuse spelling and grammar.

Yes cuz that's just what I want
What I think would be beneficial is some sort of class is schools which teaches people to mind their own friggin business instead of preaching to others how they should live based on their own limited views. oh that's right they do in the west it's called Christianity or Religios Education. a quote comes to mind " He who cast the first stone"

personal choice, thats a nice cop out.
smoking courses cancer and passive smoking is proved to have health risk on the people around you so NYC officials should pass law that gives then the right to take action to protect them selves from your smoke, say alow them to tazzer you for smoking around them.
after all your personal choice is more important than the health of the pepole around you
Personal Choice is a nice cop out damn here I thought it was a civil right
Fair enough about the second hand smoke, I didn't like the ban in the UK but I can see how letting the markets ort out non smoking and smoking locales wouldn't have worked well for pub workers.
However on your extreme comment about NYC tazing people that smoke and you breathe it in.
NYC and the US in general has produced by far the majority of the pollution which is now turning this planet into a ****heap, perhaps the rest of the world should pass a law to nuke the states. sounds silly ? hope so it's about as stupid as your argument just a case point to show that the whole stone throwing mentality your kind likes to adopt really doesn't last long in the face of reason.
I agree about passive smoking it's not right, what I am doing is pointing out how much the media and public looooves to have scapegoats whom they can blame or feel superior too. It's like an extreme version of what ****** used the jews for.
people simply need to feel like they know better then others how they should live their life which by default also gives them a feeling of superiority.
it's a dangerous slope that society is heading on the "do-Gooders" have more and more power to the point of ridiolousness. In my office it is now sackable offence to walk down the stairs not holding the hand rail for safety reasons. We have nearly daily inspections to see if we have locked our lap tops and are abiding by the no coat on chairs policy. there are people hired simply to enforce this while others are being laid off due to bad economy with their colleagues having to pick up the slack.
something is very wrong with society and the type of people in the anti-smoking brigade that try so damn hard to enforce their life style choice on others are the exact type of people i hold responsible.

Originally by: Omaku Toba That the best you can do? The issue at hand is that if you choose to smoke you not only do damage to youself but those around you. In public the best solution to this is to ban it so those that don't want to have put up with the above don't have too. The ban on smoking in certain public places didn't go too far. It should have been a complete ban in all public places and if you smoke in your house around children you should get charged with child abuse.
Everybody procreating should be charged with murder by proxy, considering they are ensuring the death of a person. Also they are responsible for everything this person does or has happening to it.
Procreation is the source of all the death and misery of the world and should be outlawed!
You're just being silly now. Dying is a simple fact of life but the manner in which you die can be partly determined by yourself and those around you. Dying of smoking related illnesses is rarely pleasant and by what right do you have to inflict that on those around you? Also not all those illnesses are fatal but serve to reduce your quality of life.
If you want to go around smoking and have your cloths and breath reek of smoke then go somewhere far away and don't force your nasty habit on everyone else. Its no different to those dirty bastards who don't wash or use deodrant yet still insist on using public transport much to the disguist of everyone around them.
Show a bit of consideration to those around you for once.
As far as the economics argument you pulled out if you read the thread you would have seen that that argument is bullcrap, smokers pay enough tax on their cigarettes to not only cover their own added cost to health service but actually add money into the budget over and above , add to that the fact that 50% of smokers won't be claiming years of pensions and your argument just falls to pieces.
as to the rest of it, what kinda car do you drive how much electricity do you use how much **** do you throw away are you obese ?should you be allowed to procreate and rear children when you allow yourself to fling supposed facts out without researching them breeding ignorance and stupidity is a form of abuse imo especially in modern Britain.
smoking is a personal choice of mine as I'm sure your faults are yours ( or are you goign to claim you are a faultless in which case i wont bother replying to any further posts from you not sure why i did with this one tbh

Exactly !
I am Norwegian but have stayed in Scotland for about 10 years.
Recently I saw this announcement from the government "talk of increasing the price of alcohol in the belief that higher costs will disuade people from buying it"
Westminster pointed at how effective this had been in Norway when they made it public on the news.
I was astonished ! Our drinking problem has became increasingly worse, every time the government has tried to curtail it.
They cut back last orders to about 12 1 hour before the pubs closed years ago. the result was that people started buying buckets of beer just before closing time and predominantly buying a lot more then they would have before because they were afraid of running out before the pub closed.
They increased the price to the point where the Russian Mafia moved in and started selling illegally distilled 96% alcohol on the Street in ltr bottles as a drug for 100kr(ú10) The result was that in some years we have had more deaths from Moonshine containing Methanol then any other street drug combined.
Every curtailing action they take has the exact opposite effect and sometimes quite terrible ones.
As far as the effectiveness of these type of adverts on smoking the problem I find is that either they make it seem cool for the hard kids to smoke, The man says we shouldn't so we will is the most basic rebellion instinct kids have. Or they simply work to eventually desensitize and push away smokers by demonising them. You smoke so you don't love your children WTF !
As far as the effectiveness of these adverts coupled with the price hikes. The NHS reported 2007 as having the least smokers ever, not sure how they collate these statistics but i suspect cigarette sales has alot to do with it a a poll would have to include everyone in the country as smoking tends to be focused in certain social groups and areas a lot more then others.
If they collate it by cigarette sales then it's interesting to note that Customs and Excise reports a enourmous increase in illegal imports of cigarettes which they are desperatly trying to clamp down on due to the lost tax revenue.
