How exactly does ore respawning work? If I pop a veld roid in a belt containing veld, scord, plag and jaspet roids, will it automatically respawn a veld roid replacement? Or will it be random, and possibly a jaspet?

Yes, afaik it will.
And NO, not popping roids has no effect on their regrowth at all. Originally by: Aneu Angellus Iv held back from posting on this thread for quite some time, but i think the time had come for me to come in and post.

Ive hard that popping rare roids is bad, cause they regrow to full much faster than they respawn(if they do at all).

1. All roids experience a refresh cycle during daily downtime. It is during this time that a roid gains some ore, and previously *poofed* roids get reborn. The type of ore in the newborn roid is exactly the same type that was in the roid that *poofed*.
2. Roids replenish at approx. the same rate each day up to a limit, at which point the ore content of the roid appears to cap.
3. If a roid is still present during the downtime refresh, it's visual appearance will increase by 1 size level. This visual appearance, however, has no effect on the actual content of the roid. (ie: A 100 radius roid may contain 4,000 units of ore, or it may contain 11,000 units of ore. Mileage may vary)
4. Except in a few rare circumstances involving some kind of bug, all roids will follow this pattern regardless of whether the roids were *poofed* or mined down to 1 unit. There is currently no 'miracle grow' formula or technique that will make roids replenish faster.
5. Rarely a 'leap spawn' will occur. A 'leap spawn' is a day in which roids do not replenish during downtime like they should have. This 'leap spawn' appears to be a random occurrance that is most likely tied to a bug that either rarely occurs, or was fixed during the last 'leap spawn'. I have only witnessed them twice in my Eve'ing carreer.

Thanks for the information. It's really helpful and sounds authoritative. Can I ask where you got it from? Was it from a dev blog? Rumors seem to run wild about ore spawn mechanics.
Example: Alliances seem intent on "farming" belts. Meaning, depleting/popping low-end roids to increase respawn/regrowth rate of high ends. Based on your information "farming" doesn't seem to help at all and regrowth rate is fixed no matter what you do.

i believe there's a theory (or maybe it's real ... dunno) that the limit on ore is for the whole belt and not on each roid
therefore if you keep popping the rares over and over again every day the common roids will keep growing ... eventualy filling the belt limit once the limit is reached the rare roids will have to spawn in a different belt
this pattern was used to explain the disappearance of Arkanor and Spodumain last year __________________________________________

I only just started playing again after a several month absence, so I don't know if this has changed recently, but rock spawns appear to be dynamic.
For the hell of it last night I decided to systematicly strip-mine a belt. I found a nice dense one where I could get fully a third of the belt within 10km of me. I started mining out the veldspar first, the plan being to work my way up one ore type at a time.
After a couple hours I'd eliminated every veld rock within 9km and was working on the last few between 9-10km out. One popped and I checked the scanner for a fresh victim.. only to find half a dozen veld rocks sitting less than 7km from my ship. They were only 500-600m across vs. the 2-3km rocks I'd been seeing, and they popped fairly quickly, so they didn't contain much ore.

The truth is the equation for ore regrow is something connected with a % of current rock units, so not popping roids is very important.
I dont know from where all those pilots that say popping is unimportant take their knowledge.Make a simple test observe ore regrow on a 1000 unit and a 20 unit rock.
Keeping rocks at certain level to make regrow much much faster is critical for any alliance, all have rules for this.

Poping roids is in reality not a problem, the problem is you have to tend to the whole field in order to maximize its worth.
If you constantly pop high end roids and leave scordite and veld alone it seems the latter will take over more and more of the fields, if not in the way of less good ore spawning then in the way that you cant reasonably get to the good ore due to gigantic slabs in the way.
There is talk of a 4 roid belt system with a station on another thread, aparently the ark roids respawn there with a good amount of ark in them every day despite the stones being popped all the time.
As there are many miners active there and as there are only 4 belts I would guess that thise belts are more or less completely mined every day, this could account for its rapid and profitable regrowth (especially the fact that all the belts get wiped).
In 0.0 there is a problem, not many people wish to haul low yield ore the long distance from the field to the station thus the low end roids are allowed to grow out of controle and thus poping the good ones could be hampering.
It would be very interesting if some corp with large mining crews did some field testing, pick a system with few belts, chew ALL the roids every day for a week and see if the profitability of the roids increase.
I would do it myself but alas Im just one person and not very profitient at mining.
Lastly then, my above post is pure speculation added together with perls of wisdom comming out of Devs moths, it may very possible be that I have made assumptions on no ground whatsoever :)
Have fun.

It works a % of belt space to respawn rate.
a empty belt has 100% frespace. a belt has a set limit % for each ore type it contains.
so: veld has a 75% scord 60% omber 40% ark with a 10%
the rate of respawn is like
veld will spawn 40% its max % each respawn scord 35% omber 19% ark 0.5%
But the rate of refill is veld 55% scord 45% omber 28% ark 2.4%
this means to respawn ark in 0.4 u would need to mine veld and scord out of the belt each respawn but leave anything more rare.
this is why alliances in 0.0 punish rare ore poper.

From my experience i have found that if you only mine half of any type of ore at a particular belt then that ore should refresh itself to full within 24hrs. The problem with this system is that it only works if: a)you only mine 1 or 2 type of ore. b)no one else is mining the field.
If you have a system out of the way and to yourself then these problems should not arise.

Another theory to add to this one...
Click
To say the truth, nobody knows exactly how it works. Even during beta this was asked many times, but devs were evasive on the subject
From my very own experience, letting not one but 400/500 units in each roid works. I don't know why, but they grow faster. Mining a roid to death won't make it reappear after downtime each time, but this wasn't pointed out as a bug, but as a roid cycle within the Eve's universe, making roid appearing elsewhere in the universe instead than in the belt.
Just keep in mind that on the long run, roid farming works. The problem is not everybody mines using a survey scanner and in 0.0 we regularly find our usual belts completly destroyed.
This is one of the reason some alliance (a lot in fact) close their space, or at least the richest part of it, to avoid other miners to kill their profit because of ignorance.

I can say from experience that roid "farming" does NOT work. I've experimented with it and can say from my findings that the roids DO NOT grow any faster nor do they grow in different types. The only thing that happens differently when you "farm" a roid is the visible size of the roid appears to get larger than the amount of ore in contains would justify. What a lot of people don't seem to understand (and can verify with only a few days in a secluded belt) is that the visible size of an asteroid means absolutely nothing compared to how much ore it really contains. I'm sorry if others have tried to mislead you with notions of magical roid properties but what I stated above I have seen with my own eyeballs (and a residual survey scanner). I will only believe otherwise if a dev pops in here and tells me it's not true. Otherwise I'm sticking with what I see happening.

Edited by: Helison on 25/08/2004 13:15:03 I donŠt know excactly, how roid respawning works, except that only popped roids reappear, nothing else (no other ore types...). I know for sure, that the radius of a roid is linked to its containing ore. But there is one problem: The radius is only updated in the downtime. If someone has mined this roid since the last DT, the radius is too big. The radius of very large roids (Veldspar...) is also often too big. |

Hrmmm. there's a few differing points of experience / view. Could any Dev's reading this p'raps throw up a quick note explaining how the roid respawn works? That would be greatly appreciated and help not only the players but perhaps lessen the amount of "WTF are there only Veld and Scord roids in my system anymore? this game is SO bugged.. Haven't mined in awhile, but the last time we did any kind of systematic test (ore scanners before and after, used a deep space system no one else was mining) our results were much like what Earthan is saying, rocks with 100 units left regenerated a lot more ore than rocks left with 5 or 10 units.
I suspect roid regrowth operates like capacitor and shield regen. In those cases, empty and almost full both regen very slowly, whereas 1/4 to 3/4 full regen faster. So yeah, folks who ban cutting high-end roids below 50 units are being smart from what I can see. (and no, our alliance has never bothered as we don't have high demand ore like Ark or in-system Bist)

lol - everyone has their own theroy, its like the JFK conspiracy
We dont pop rare roids as leaving them at 100, seems to make them regrow quicker (have never really done any controled experiments though), plus we BM them for easier mining. I think the devs are reading all this right now and LTAO - the roid re-spawn system probably works completely differently to what any of us have suggested

We dont pop rare roids as leaving them at 100, seems to make them regrow quicker (have never really done any controled experiments though), plus we BM them for easier mining. I think the devs are reading all this right now and LTAO - the roid re-spawn system probably works completely differently to what any of us have suggested

Originally by: Par'Nabuk I can say from experience that roid "farming" does NOT work.
No dev misleaded us in anything. These hypothesis of better growth of roid has to be linked with the global one, saying the more material is done and kept buy players, the less roid will regrowth. Farming also doesn't work each time. This is why you didn't noticed it. Some areas seems to have a better regrowth for some times (from some days to many months). But even these areas after a while do not allow roid farming anymore. It seems to be something like a random paramater that is scheduled to last a random time, in a random area.
This is why some people say "yes it works" or "no, no way". I imagine that like the "wrecking hits" you can get every X shots. It also seems, like somebody else said, to work like the capacitor of your ship. It replenishes faster while being at more or less 1/3. I've seen areas where regrowth was working for 3 days, and then won't for month, and back again for 1 month... I've also some areas where it seems still to work, and it started months ago.
But don't expect any dev to give us such a secret. Whe can only make hypothesies, and from my very own experience, and the one of my m8, we have come to the preceding conclusion and also set rules... - every mining operation (in 0.0) needs at least 1 survey scanner - scan has to be done regularly, depending on the numbers of ship mining (a general mining amount is calculated adding all the mining capabilities of all present ships) - when a bistot or crokite roid only got 400/500 units, it is left alone and everybody has to stop mining and concentrate on another
We of course use this method on rare roids, above pyro. Jaspet being quite rare in our areas (in empire) we do apply this technique too. (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

I'm a mining freak and I've mined in systems from 1.0 to 0.0 since the beginning of Eve and have not yet seen a demonstrable difference in roid regeneration using the "mine it till it pops" and "leave some and move on" methods.
They seem (from my scans) to have no effect on roid regeneration (besides perhaps visual appearance of the roids).
With all the other things on CCP's plate, it is more likely there is NOT some magical formula for regen but rather just an "across the board" bumping up of the ore ammounts on some schedule. This is just my opinion and I may be wrong.

I don't know who's right or wrong. We even do not agree on the figures. But better regrowth has been spotted in many areas. Maybe there is some occult data dev's have hidden.
As I told, no dev posted a clear mechanic on the respawn system... Maybe they don't know how it works (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

I just got another theory
This is still based on the build items/avalaible mineral in the roids.
Let's say that in a system we have 10 crokite roids holding 1500 units. That's 15000 units
Let's mine them till they reach 500. We have now 10000 in our cargo and 5000 in belts.
What I think now is : -The crokite roid will regrowth after downtime, as all the others do, based on a common percentage. -Other factors can enter in these growth
For instance, these percentage will be highter if it mets the following conditions : -The roid hold between 5 and 10% of its maximum size -The ore mined has been moved to another system/constellation/region -A hight number of NPCs and PC ships where destroyed in the area -System holds less than X% of the total constellation roids value, X being the percentage equivalent of the number of systems in constellation (for instance, in a 5 systems constellation, X is 20%)
Of course this is a theory...But it sounds nice ^^ It's anyway very hard to get exact figures as you will need to close an entire constellation for some times and scan all the roids of each belt in each system to get a view... I think the thumbrule, mine a rare roid till it's at i.e 1000 is only there to prevent shortage. So in reality, it only prevents a total lack of ore from a 0.0 system.
I know that in OR, there are only 3 systems containing Crok close to stations, so keeping a policy is needed unless you want to do long hauls.

I'm finding lots of belts that are completely empty in deep 0.0 space. I assumed they had been stripped, but if they respawn nightly this isn't the case. I thought hidden belts were all fixed? What's going on?
any idea? -- Jump Drive Operation / Rank 5 / SP: 1280000 of 1280000
