How exactly does ore respawning work? If I pop a veld roid in a belt containing veld, scord, plag and jaspet roids, will it automatically respawn a veld roid replacement? Or will it be random, and possibly a jaspet?

Yes, afaik it will.
And NO, not popping roids has no effect on their regrowth at all. Originally by: Aneu Angellus Iv held back from posting on this thread for quite some time, but i think the time had come for me to come in and post.

Ive hard that popping rare roids is bad, cause they regrow to full much faster than they respawn(if they do at all).

1. All roids experience a refresh cycle during daily downtime. It is during this time that a roid gains some ore, and previously *poofed* roids get reborn. The type of ore in the newborn roid is exactly the same type that was in the roid that *poofed*.
2. Roids replenish at approx. the same rate each day up to a limit, at which point the ore content of the roid appears to cap.
3. If a roid is still present during the downtime refresh, it's visual appearance will increase by 1 size level. This visual appearance, however, has no effect on the actual content of the roid. (ie: A 100 radius roid may contain 4,000 units of ore, or it may contain 11,000 units of ore. Mileage may vary)
4. Except in a few rare circumstances involving some kind of bug, all roids will follow this pattern regardless of whether the roids were *poofed* or mined down to 1 unit. There is currently no 'miracle grow' formula or technique that will make roids replenish faster.
5. Rarely a 'leap spawn' will occur. A 'leap spawn' is a day in which roids do not replenish during downtime like they should have. This 'leap spawn' appears to be a random occurrance that is most likely tied to a bug that either rarely occurs, or was fixed during the last 'leap spawn'. I have only witnessed them twice in my Eve'ing carreer.

Thanks for the information. It's really helpful and sounds authoritative. Can I ask where you got it from? Was it from a dev blog? Rumors seem to run wild about ore spawn mechanics.
Example: Alliances seem intent on "farming" belts. Meaning, depleting/popping low-end roids to increase respawn/regrowth rate of high ends. Based on your information "farming" doesn't seem to help at all and regrowth rate is fixed no matter what you do.

i believe there's a theory (or maybe it's real ... dunno) that the limit on ore is for the whole belt and not on each roid
therefore if you keep popping the rares over and over again every day the common roids will keep growing ... eventualy filling the belt limit once the limit is reached the rare roids will have to spawn in a different belt
this pattern was used to explain the disappearance of Arkanor and Spodumain last year __________________________________________

I only just started playing again after a several month absence, so I don't know if this has changed recently, but rock spawns appear to be dynamic.
For the hell of it last night I decided to systematicly strip-mine a belt. I found a nice dense one where I could get fully a third of the belt within 10km of me. I started mining out the veldspar first, the plan being to work my way up one ore type at a time.
After a couple hours I'd eliminated every veld rock within 9km and was working on the last few between 9-10km out. One popped and I checked the scanner for a fresh victim.. only to find half a dozen veld rocks sitting less than 7km from my ship. They were only 500-600m across vs. the 2-3km rocks I'd been seeing, and they popped fairly quickly, so they didn't contain much ore.

The truth is the equation for ore regrow is something connected with a % of current rock units, so not popping roids is very important.
I dont know from where all those pilots that say popping is unimportant take their knowledge.Make a simple test observe ore regrow on a 1000 unit and a 20 unit rock.
Keeping rocks at certain level to make regrow much much faster is critical for any alliance, all have rules for this.

Poping roids is in reality not a problem, the problem is you have to tend to the whole field in order to maximize its worth.
If you constantly pop high end roids and leave scordite and veld alone it seems the latter will take over more and more of the fields, if not in the way of less good ore spawning then in the way that you cant reasonably get to the good ore due to gigantic slabs in the way.
There is talk of a 4 roid belt system with a station on another thread, aparently the ark roids respawn there with a good amount of ark in them every day despite the stones being popped all the time.
As there are many miners active there and as there are only 4 belts I would guess that thise belts are more or less completely mined every day, this could account for its rapid and profitable regrowth (especially the fact that all the belts get wiped).
In 0.0 there is a problem, not many people wish to haul low yield ore the long distance from the field to the station thus the low end roids are allowed to grow out of controle and thus poping the good ones could be hampering.
It would be very interesting if some corp with large mining crews did some field testing, pick a system with few belts, chew ALL the roids every day for a week and see if the profitability of the roids increase.
I would do it myself but alas Im just one person and not very profitient at mining.
Lastly then, my above post is pure speculation added together with perls of wisdom comming out of Devs moths, it may very possible be that I have made assumptions on no ground whatsoever :)
Have fun.

It works a % of belt space to respawn rate.
a empty belt has 100% frespace. a belt has a set limit % for each ore type it contains.
so: veld has a 75% scord 60% omber 40% ark with a 10%
the rate of respawn is like
veld will spawn 40% its max % each respawn scord 35% omber 19% ark 0.5%
But the rate of refill is veld 55% scord 45% omber 28% ark 2.4%
this means to respawn ark in 0.4 u would need to mine veld and scord out of the belt each respawn but leave anything more rare.
this is why alliances in 0.0 punish rare ore poper.

From my experience i have found that if you only mine half of any type of ore at a particular belt then that ore should refresh itself to full within 24hrs. The problem with this system is that it only works if: a)you only mine 1 or 2 type of ore. b)no one else is mining the field.
If you have a system out of the way and to yourself then these problems should not arise.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

Are any of these figures related to respawn corroborated with anything handed down by the devs in an interview somewhere, or are all these anecdotal, trial and error?

My information is based on what I've observed when working my circle of systems over the past few months. I don't think CCP has ever revealed the secrets to their resource management code.
