I'm not very good on fitting, but teh case is that i use a Badger for mining (so the high turret is used for a miner, and the badger has no room for drones) - how can i defend myself?
(as it is, i warp away when attacked by rats)

Industrial for mining is a bad idea. You make, what, 1-2 mil ISK after 2-5 hours of (I just hope AFK) mining ? If you're lucky enough for the 'roid you're mining to not pop before ? That's pathetic !
Basically, you're looking at 400k-500k ISK per hour. At best, if you're lucky, and fairly high-skilled (mining/astrogeo 4, T2 miner). You can make much more money with an industrial by simply hauling stuff from one place to another (like, say, just about any minerals from a remote location to a market hub). Or running L1/L2 courier missions.

Mine in 0.9 or 1.0, and there won't be any rats to bother you.
Alternatively, this should be able to handle hisec rats... [Badger Mark II, Miner] Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II
Medium Shield Extender II Medium Shield Extender II Medium Shield Extender II Shield Recharger II Shield Recharger II Shield Recharger II
Miner II [empty high slot]

Edited by: Alpha Foo on 05/04/2009 16:29:04 Swap one of the Mining Laser Upgrade II's for an Expanded Cargohold II and that will increase your mining time from roughly 50 minutes with max skills to almost 70 minutes. That's assuming that the goal is AFK mining and you can find an asteroid that will last that long.
Now why you'd spend 7.3M ISK (at Jita prices) to be able to AFK mine more efficiently is beyond me. For that kind of money, you could buy a Retriever and mine the same amount in a lot less time.
*edit* If you're not planning in training into mining barges, then you should look at the Osprey cruiser. It can mount 3 mining lasers and gets a 20% per cruiser level bonus to mining amount. In effect it gives you 6 mining lasers at cruiser V. Find an out of the way place to mine, some missions have lots of asteroids in them. Fill a Jetcan with ore and come back in the Badger to pick it up. Doesn't work so well AFK but you'll make ISK faster.

Or train mining drones to maximum, train to fly an Orca, fit a single LSE and have more tank than the badger :)
And you can set one drone on each of the five closest, biggest asteroids, and come back a couple of hours later to find that you've mined far more than the Badger in the same time.
The badger will max out when it either fills its hold, or the asteroid runs dry. The Orca has five times as many asteroids it can suck up, and with 5 mining drone ii you'll be mining at about the same speed as the badger.
You'll also be prime suicide-gank bait, but who's really going to suicide gank an Orca?

The process by which you now mine's masochistic I'd like to propose a process more realistic! I think what you seek is to mine with more safety (Probably because you're incredibly lazy)
What the Doctor prescribes, with a second opinion, is a miner with drones set to take all aggression. a ship like a covetor, a mackinaw, or hulk have immense cargo bays with which to take the bulk. They're not long to train, if mining's your profession and I guarantee that you'll make more for each session
The rule for each ship with which mining is done: You don't pack mining drones, you load up drone guns! Stick with hammerheads, Warriors, or hobgoblins hobgoblins And know Hulks shield tank with very few problems
But if you don't do as suggested, please do consider upgrading to a badger II. With twice the high slots, more CPU, Grid, and a larger hold and a couple more mids, it could defend itself better, perhaps fit a gun And the low slots could fit more expanders per run.

lol - masochistic. It's the AFK mining i was interested in, but i do see that the asteroids "popping" quite often.
Now i bought a bantam (costs next to nothing)and will try my hand at jetcanning. (those other ones you mention i wil try my hand at later - i only have two million isk)

If you are actively playing - then by all means use at least a mining frigate. Bantams are fine. Put a combat drone on it and you can kill the rats that bother you.
Train Salvaging and you can put a Salvager on your Industrial and harvest the rat wrecks when you come to empty the jet can.
If you want to mine semi-afk while you watch TV or eat dinner or something - just put the Industrial in a .9 or 1.0 system where you don't have to worry about rats and all that tanking.
Train Astrogeology up to V, put as many mining upgrades on as you can and a Miner II. That and put a ore scanner in your mids so you can pick a big rock. That isn't worth doing unless you're going to do that on a regular basis - but if you're going to be a miner - then you want Astrogeology trained up anyway.
You an also train Industrial V to get as much cargo space as you can.
You want to have two Industrials.
Fit one as above to be your AFK Miner.
Fit the other as your Hauler with Expanded Cargo Holds and put Giant Secure Containers in it's hold to increase it's capacity. A GSC is a Planck container - what that means in the game is that it takes up 3000m3 of space in your hold - BUT - it holds 3900m3 worth of stuff. Use this one to empty that jet can.
Also, remember to mine in quiet systems. The map is your friend. Set the filters to show Pilots in Space and look for a spot in High Sec Space where there aren't any.
Alternatively - run missions and mine your mission space. Many missions have asteroids in them.
Of course, the best way to do it - is with a buddy or an alternate account. One guy mines the other guy hauls. Drag a bookmark from your people and places into your hold then jettison it to create the jet can. Move the ore into it from one ship and take it out with the other. Name the can with the time you created it as it will last 2 hours and then pop. Be advised - all jet can's will pop in 2 hours. So keep that in mind if you are solo jet canning - as if you keep putting ore into that jet can for two hours without retrieving it - you will lose it all when it pops.

Nope.
Unless you wanted a ratting badger, you're going to have to stick a miner on the one turret hardpoint a Badger Mk II has. -- "Like sending messages in bottles. Bottles with superior firepower." |
