Hi guys,
I'm on a trip soon and realised I've been, erm, "affected" by the loss of the classic client - the premium client tells me my Acer Aspire One doesn't support shader model 2.
Which is a bit of a problem.
Has anyone out there got Eve running under Wine/Linux on a netbook? I don't mind buying newer hardware, but has this option been kicked out of the market by the shader model 2 requirement ??
I don't care about performance - it's purely so that I can check and update market orders and deal with POS management.
[As a by-the-by, it gets really confusing as the intel 945GME chip in the Acer does support Shader 2, but I guess this is only under windows... or is it ? Can't find much comprehensible info on the winehq website]
Any and all help appreciated.

Good Luck.
Btw, if you find out, I'm interested in that too (GMA950).
I think it's actually not possible unless you put your hands in the Wine code and write a specific patch. But yeah, you are obviously interested in my post because you're now reading my signature. |

Thanks...
To help out other people trying to Google/Eve-Search this :-
1. I've tried using 3d-analyzer, which is a Windows utility for tricking D3D programmes on the actual capabilities of the hardware, and can't even get a debug log file under WINE to see why it doesn't work. Actually, in the unlikely event that anyone from CCP visits this desert of a forum, one of the sticking points might be the insistence of ExeFile.Exe that any foreign files in CCP/EVE/bin are evil and should immediately stop the client running.
2. I've also taken a brief look at Swiftshader, but I've been unable to find how to hook this into either WINE or Eve under Linux.
3. Apart from all that, apparently the premium client has a minimum res of 1024 x 768 - so any little widescreen netbooks at 1024 x 600 will be SOL from the start.
Speaking personally, and I know there has been a lot of whining about the whole shader model 2 thing - I think CCP has missed a trick if point (3) above is true. Even if you sold your soul and got a netbook with XP on it, if the minimum res requirements stop you running EVE.... well, I'd like to have been in that meeting.
Particularly frustrating as this time last year I was running quite happily on an Asus Eee 701 as a portable solution and my expectations haven't changed. It's not always about maximum performance graphics for PVP operations.
Yours,
having a bad Eve day,
Mike'P

Hi guys,
More info for the Google warriors blazing this trail behind me (sic)...
VNC/Remote Desktop won't work either. I had this brilliant idea of leaving my bulky Ubuntu laptop at home running Eve, and then remote desktop into it on my travels.
This works perfectly for all the other apps I've got, but doesn't work with Eve. You can see the splashscreen, then nothing.
If anyone can tell me that I've missed a magic switch in the configuration, I'm open to ideas.
Yours,
Still having a bad Eve day,
Mike'P.

From my experience:
The client itself runs nice even with 1024x600 but some buttons get ugly small and the station window gets to big and the buttons for corp hanger, office etcpp are barelly visible but still usable.
Performance is a pain on a netbook with five to eight FPS, even with the ultraoptimized/hacked Asus-Drivers under windows. The linux drivers usually are a lot slower (*1) so I didn't tried them at all and stopped playing EVE on my netbook (read: play a lot less EVE at all)
(*1) Urban Terror ut4_eagle under windows 40fps, under linux 25fps

I've not tried this, but I would bet that your best chance of getting VNC to work (and it'd be for skill planning only, not actual gameplay) would be to run eve under compiz, then eve would be encapsulated in somthing that does work with the built in remote access in Gnome...

To solve the shader problems :
Create anywhere you want a file eve.reg, then, copy past :
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D] "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "UseGLSL"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="xxx"
Which xxx is the size of the memory on your graphic card, then, open rededit.exe in wine, and import this file, start the game, then enjoyed =)

Doesn't work for me with wine-1.1.20. Does it work for anyone else with a gma-945?

I had a similar problem. eve mentioned my grafics card did not support SM2.0. I installed the latest linux nvidia driver. 180.51 after that it worked with winw 1.1.20.
The GMA-945 gfxcard does not support shadermodel 2.0. Even wine can not do some winetricks to install it ... sorry to say that. But i read that transgaming has a new software: Swiftshader. A Software implementation of gfx shaders. Maybe that is something for you. Is it integrated in the cedega client? I dont know ...

The above is not true. The GMA 945/950 supports Vertex Shader 3.0 and Pixel Shader 2.0, which allows you to crank all setting up to high on windows.
Swiftshader: runs on windows, renders eve totally in software, gives 4 fps on an athlon 3300+
Unfortunately i want to run it with linux and the intel drivers for linux seem to be the problem here.

Wasnt there a hack for wine around which simply made it report Shader 3.0 being available no matter what? Might be something to try, tho i doubt it will look pretty :)

this also isn't entirely true, the GMA945/950 has no in hardware support for transform and lighting ops (vertex shader included). It's "Vertex Shader 3.0" support is entirely in the driver and executed on the system CPU. I'm not sure how much of the pixel shader work it does on board.
The intel driver under linux does have the proper support for SM2 calls, not sure what the issue is with wine.
cheers

Bit of a necro I know, but I was wondering if this has been solved as yet, or what has happened so far if anything....
Thanks for your time.
