I recommend Death Note, the one reason being it (almost) completely lacks the horrid stereotypes you see in other turds Japan squeezes out of it's cartoonists. Short series around 40 episodes but each one is excellent. One of my favorites out of all I've seen (and I've seen anywhere from good to crap, for almost all ages).
Egro Proxy as well, if you liked Blade Runner, Logan's Run that sort of thing. It starts out slow, each episode constantly begins in medias res but gets better as the series goes on. Shorter than Death note at around 20-30 episodes. Had to watch it twice to get/understand everything from it. I would count this as my #1 seen, but your mileage may vary.
And yes, Bleach had started very good but has caught the dreaded Dragonball Z disease.

Originally by: Dan Glebitts Listen to what these folks are saying. I'd stay away from Bleach myself. 218? episodes and there are a few awesomely epic fights but they are interspersed with some astoundingly bad runs of episodes.
Search for episode 217 to see what I mean.
It's good when it puts aside that horrible anime fight scene template which goes something like this.
[Talk, Fight, Talk, and now my power is unleashed, talk, ahh but I was hiding my true power, talk, ahh but I was actually secretly holding back, talk, talk, this is my ultimate form]
10 episodes later you feel like pulling your eyes out in frustration. That sort of writing is nauseating.
It's funny, I don't necessarily dislike Naruto and Bleach, however they are HORRIBLE at fillers, and it really scares me away from wanting to commit to these gigantic series. Compared to older series like Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z. Filler sets were 3 episodes long at most, and instead what they do is drag on the story with power ups and training during the actual manga storyline, instead of create season long "Garlic Jr" sagas for filler. The problem with all anime series that reach peak popularity is, the manga creators can't keep up with the storyline creation. So the studios have to find unique ways to keep the massive ratings intact while the manga creators pushes out more work.
Besides the overpopular mainstream stuff, a series I watched recently which was actually extremely good was all 3 seasons of Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha. It's kinda like Card Captor Sakura with a massive shot of epinephrine. Extremely entertaining, and pure story. The first two seasons are 12 eps each, and the 3rd season is 24 episodes. A theatrical movie is being released in late summer I believe.
If you are looking for comedy, the funniest anime series I've ever seen in my life is Gintama. It's kinda like Abenobashi, however there are no transendent story rules. For example, one episode the main character stops in the middle of a scene in the middle of the episode and says "omg we forgot to play the intro!", and they start playing the gintama intro in the middle of the episode. HAHA.. That's a tiny tiny example, but a guarentee you've never seen anything like it.

I would personally recommend this fine animated series. The stories are well written, the characters are robust yet beautifully flawed. Perfect in every way. ---------- This post brought to you by the worst PVP'er in Eve |

Edited by: Mr Reeth on 05/05/2009 18:33:44 90% of all anime sucks.
Only the best stuff ever makes it out of the country. And even that's mostly crap.
It's all horribly formulaic, just the same crap over and over again. There's no originality or creativity. There's no insights or anything to be gained from watching it. Most of it is filler. To save money the creators take a lot of shortcuts. Please watch for these shortcuts the next time you watch your favorite anime.
1) long theme song played at the beginning and end of the show. That's up to 6 minutes of air time they only have to animate once. 2) Characters sitting still, they may be thinking, brooding, looking cool or whatever, but still characters cost nothing. 3) Characters moving super fast, fast actions require much fewer drawings. That's why you almost never see slow motion animated. 4) repeated movements, most often seen while traveling, they just animate 1 second and repeat it for 1 minute. 5) flashbacks, just reused footage... very convenient, very cheap. 6) cheap camera work, you'll often see the the camera pan over an empty background or heavy use of establishing shots.
And as we all know the stories drag on forever... hurry up and do something damnit! I don't need a full series recap every episode.
While there are some that are worth watching and some that are indeed quite good, it is mostly crap.
Aside form the obvious money saving reasons anime is made to be crap because its mostly for kids. And if any Japaphiles reading this come to Japan hide your love for anime. It's just not cool to be into anime and old enough to grow body hair here.
All this anime bashing aside anything is better than American network sitcoms... worst garbage man has ever produced.
And as a special treat I'm gonna link what the kids in Japan are into these days. Its so popular marble statues of the main character dot the Japanese landscape and there is even a museum dedicated to the show. Enjoy!

Recommending Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I'll try out Gintama and Black Lagoon.

Blood+. Chobits. Code Geass / Code Geass R2 Cowboy Bebop. DearS. Deathnote. D.N.Angel. Elfen Lied. Fate / Stay Night. Fullmetal Alchemist. Fullmetal Panic. GAD Guard. Gungrave. Lucky Star. Neon Genesis Evangelion. Rozen Maiden. Saikano. The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya. Wolf's Rain.
Thats everything i have watched. I would recommend most, although it entirely depends on what anime you like. I like anything with a comedy element (Mostly Lucky Star, haruhi, Chobits, and Fullmetal panic), or Mecha (Quite a few of the above, i.e Geass, Genesis, Fullmetal Panic). Then the occasional mind**** (I.e Saikano, Deathnote, Elfen Lied). I think the only one in the above list that is really a RomCom alone is DearS. But thats really there because it came "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AAAA+" from my ex. Was a good laugh for the short length.
I download pretty much everything in MKV with dual audio + subs. I do not discriminate .
I'm currently obtaining Gunslinger Girl season 1, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (After much praise from these forums). And will prolly hit up some folk i know on their recommendations if i have not exhausted them yet ______________________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

I watched the first dozen or so episodes of Geass (since Bandai put the entire first season up on youtube), no idea why people recommend it. Started out strong, but quickly devolved into cliche anime on par with Blood+. Don't know why one would recommend that either. I'm ashamed to admit I watched every episode, partly out of boredom and partly out of loyalty to the original Blood movie.
As for Bleach: read the manga, stop where all that ban kai nonsense starts. As for One Piece: Don't bother.
One anime I never see people talking about is Burst Angel. Terrible show, shameless T&A fest, but it's cool with that. It's just like, sorry our show sucks, here's some boobies and giant robots. We cool bra? Yeah, we cool. Deff recommended. In before Ralara. |

I don't disagree but that goes for everything, from anywhere.
There's a few american TV shows I like. Maybe 2 or 3 airing at any given time. I'm always astonished by how many other, terrible shows there are though. I tend to go by what gets good reviews but there's a hojillion other shows that AV Club don't even bother to review.
Quote: shameless T&A fest

Try Berserk. It's Medieval Themed but pretty awesome. In the first episode like 15 people die and one guy gets shot in the face repeatedly with a crossbow.
Gungrave is pretty good too it's Mafia themed and you need to get past the first couple of episodes but it's fun to watch and unique for being a Mafia anime.
Also you might try the newest Appleseed. Set in the last city on Earth after an Apocalypse. Focuses around a legendary woman warrior. Best scene of the movie would have to be when she goes into a simulated fight with like 15-20 marines and starting with only a knife takes out all of them in like less than 10 minutes (She steals their weapons).

I probably have the largest collection of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli of everyone here, that I am not really ashamed to admit because Ghibli's material is just epic.
Unlike the rest, so indeed anime sucks. |
