Has anyone gotten into the anime show's One Piece or Bleach? I was thinking about checking them out as they both have over 200 episodes so I figured they might be worth watching.
Also for those of you that are into anime Code Geass and Black Lagoon are both really worth watching.

One piece is really campy and for kids so I wouldnt recomend it. Bleach is more mature when compared to One Piece but is aimed for the 16+ age group.
Code Geass is pretty good. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

so wrong, true the first 40 eps are abit childish but stick with it, it starts getting really good around the arlong park arc(unless you're watching the horrible horrible 4kids dub). as for bleach i almost cant be bothered with it anymore considering 50% of it is filler and bad filler at that but then thats more a complaint of someone who reads the manga.
honestly as a long time watcher of both shows one piece>>>>>bleach.

Bleach gets crap after the second arc, so if you start watching be prepared to eventually get to an "OH GOD WHY" moment and stop watching again.
As is the end result with all 'ongoing' series. -

Edited by: Celinthis on 08/04/2009 08:09:04 If you want to watch some of the longer, good anime series that don't take ages to get into try: - Hajime no ippo- about boxing, even if you dislike sports in general it's awesome strangely enough - Initial D - About street racing in Japan, long before it got popular here - GTO (Great teacher Onizuka) - About a pervy no-good who becomes a teacher, one of the best series ever!
Start with those, that'll be one more Japanophile :D Moohahahahaaa!
Edit: Oh and I won't be held responsible for you losing 60 pounds, starting to live healthy and learn boxing after Hajime no Ippo... Like I did...

This is particularly good if you have seen shounen like Bleach before, as it follows exactly (exactly) the same formula, but with a street-racing night life instead of a supernatural alter ego, cars/racing techniques instead of magical powers, and races instead of fights. Lulz ensue when you see scenes you have seen many times before, but this time with cars. -

Well, the manga doesn't have all the filler, so it isn't as bad story wise. However, I have never understood the appeal of reading the manga of a series whose real appeal is the action scenes.

Go with one piece, but not the kiddy version of it. I saw some examples of it where blood was replaced with water and the dub was horrible as usual.
One piece takes a while to get really started, but it grows on you. The author really lets his imagination run wild with the people and stories he comes up with. He also uses those characters better then in most animes. Without spoiling anything, some of those characters play important roles in the series even after you think the story has moved away from them and they rarely get killed, but the author still manages to tell very good and dramatic stories with a sense of danger.
Bleach on the other hand got really boring a few years ago. I've been keeping my eye on the manga, but story wise it hasn't really progressed much since then. The fights are entertaining enough though. The bleach anime has a huge ass filler arc(about 50 episodes) at one point, so be warned.

One Piece is pretty campy, my mate likes it though so you may like it. Bleach started off pretty well, then it just entered generic emo anime mode and I stopped watching it.
That said, I support Jacob in saying, go watch Code Geass.

Also, in quality, japanese cartoons range from "freaking weird" to "****ing disgusting".

A guy dancing around with a flamingo on his head. Nuff said.
Yeah the Bleach fillers, that arc lasted so long is beyond me (why did it have to be about "vampires....) but according to the wiki pages episode listing only one more episode before it gets back to the episodes that follow the canon. Hopefully the quality will pick up enough for it to be watchable again. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Jago is late to this thread. He should be in here already, frothing at the mouth with rage.
I've watched Bleach up to Episode 41. Then my DVDs ran out. It's a shame because it was quite good.
They were just about to rescue what's-her-face from the what's-it-called tower, and the talking cat has turned into a woman and is about to kick some Soul Society ass. Ichigo has already defeated the strongest soul reaper the Soul Society have, so I doubt the guy he was facing in ep 41 is going to be too much trouble for him.
____________________

I very much enjoyed Code Geass. It really keeps you always questioning whether the hero is indeed a hero and not a villian. Same thing goes for characters on the "evil side" though it really pulls you back and forth as to which side is really good or evil.
Amazing anime.

Why is it always Naruto, Bleach and One Piece? Are these airing english dubbed on american tv somewhere?
It would be interesting to see someone come in here and say: "I was thinking of getting into Gintama, or Macross 7, or Mahou Yuugi..."

Yes they are airing in the usa, and available.
I'm probably one of a few that watches shows the day they air, either streaming or I get the raw within 2 hours of airing. (raw = untranslated TV footage, made into file, usually mkv or avi, stuck on internet)
I'm watching mostly crap atm, with a few entertaining series thrown in. Link to list of what I'm watching |

Haven't checked into One Piece but I couldn't really get on with Bleach - just seems like they rushed the initial episodes just to get into the monster slaying. Which is fine but... Meh.
Confirming that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is probably as epic as you can get.

Listen to what these folks are saying. I'd stay away from Bleach myself. 218? episodes and there are a few awesomely epic fights but they are interspersed with some astoundingly bad runs of episodes.
Search for episode 217 to see what I mean.
It's good when it puts aside that horrible anime fight scene template which goes something like this.
[Talk, Fight, Talk, and now my power is unleashed, talk, ahh but I was hiding my true power, talk, ahh but I was actually secretly holding back, talk, talk, this is my ultimate form]
10 episodes later you feel like pulling your eyes out in frustration. That sort of writing is nauseating.
