I read a thread where people complaining about the probe system. It's useless for probing ships out fast.
I was also frustrated with the new system and agreed ... too early.
After playing a while with the gadgets I figured out a method to probe down a ship under 5 minutes. Approx time is round about 3 minutes.
You just need 4 probes and the trick is simple. Keep them together and move/scale mainly with SHIFT.
The initial scan doesn't need to hide probes. Just scale the whole group up and move it to the place where you expect the ship.
You need to redefine the filter for the ship you looking for. Eg. a HAC.
The first scan shows up a sphere within your scan spheres for that filtered HAC.
Now go to the top view and move each sphere JUST in X/Z and take care that the red sphere is within the cross-section. The spheres look a bit like a cross in top view. From side view they are ALWAYS on the same Y level.
Now the result shows up two or one red dot. Rarely a circle.
Resize the whole group with SHIFT and move it centered to the red spot/circle Move each sphere in X/Z only and take care again that the spots/circle are inside the cross-section.
Repeat that technique till you get yellow and finally a green spot.
Here we go.
I tested that now over 10 times and I never ended up in more than 4 minutes.
Hope that helps!

While I agree that the use of shift to resize and move probes does save you a few seconds that fact is that there is no way to probe down pilots that are checking the scanner for probes.
That said, there was no way to probe down a pilot that was checking the scanner before the changes.
Lastly 4min to find a ship still seems like quite a long time. I would say that its easy enough to do in less then 1min.

The similar problem you had with the former method. A scan took over on minute. If someone moves you had a hard time, too.
But I agree that the former system was far more simple and effective for combat purposes.

I does not save a few seconds only.
The whole method NOT to mess around with single spheres, just keep them at 4 and move them ONLY in x/z while adjusting the group at once in y is boosting the time extremely. My former test were ending up in over 10 minutes not beeing aware of the SHIFT method.
That was my personal experience.

4 min >>> the good old 27 seconds from pre-patch
Anyone with enough brain activity to click "scan" every 30 seconds is pretty much safe in W-space. Probing in 0.0 K-space is useless due to local. Tho, it is possible probe ships down ships within 30 seconds of uncloaking, but it requires lots of time bookmarking and warping around to get within 1 AU of your target. K-space ship probing is fubared, don't bother.

Previously, some vets apparently scanned ships down in under a minute.
Those vets are crying.
Poor them. ___________________________________________

Under 30 seconds actually, for any ship not in deadspace. Less than 30 seconds from pressing the scan button, and the gank fleet is warping in. This is why it was actually possible to break safespots under the old system, the probe would only appear on their directional scan for less than 30 seconds (you immediately destroy it once you get a scan result), giving you a fair shot of getting them without being spotted.
Now it's just impossible. 30 seconds was hard enough, but expecting them not to bother using the directional scan for several minutes? Pure wishful thinking. ==========
