Reading a guide tells me the smart way to mine is to go 15km PAST the asteroid, keeping it between you and the station, THEN setting a bookmark.
Sounds like a good plan, but how the hell do I do that? I can't manually control the ship, so how exactly do I give it an order to go 15km beyond something in a particular direction??

Point the nose of your ship in the rocks direction and double click your mouse right above it.. this will start you moving forward.. and then you just stop when you get where you want to be.. bookmark that spot and warp to it..
It is generally a good idea to scout you out a nice spot in a belt where you can reach lots of rocks from that spot whitout having to move too much.
15k out from the rocks is too far.. you want to be a maximum of about 12 due to inconsistancies in the intitial warp in and the odd number that doesnt show during the travel.. this will ensure you are within range without getting you too close to the rocks.
Also make sure you park a fair distance away from the belt warp in point so that anyone trying to jack yo stuff has to at least travel to you, giving yyou time to close it down and leave.
Hope this helps..

As a new player your mining lasers have a range of 10k, not 15. The 15 is for the Advaced mining Lasers that will also require a advaced mining ship. If you do not have this yet you will have to stay closer then 10k.

Edited by: Kessiaan on 10/04/2009 14:58:41 Back when I was big into mining, I'd start at one end of the belt, then move so I was just barely in range of the last rock in the belt and had the maximum number of rocks in range without missing any, then mine them all out, then repeat until the whole belt was gone. Incidently, this is the only time I've ever used the tactical display for anything useful.
As the Hulk is a very slow ship, having to stop mining to reposition = lost ISK. I really don't know what the advantage of putting the rock between you and the station would be, other than making you have to move around a lot.

I think your reading an old guide from before the warp to zero. Long ago you had to make bookmarks about 15km past what you wanted to warp to in order to land on top of it. If your using a small hold mining ship, you'll do several warps to station as your hold fills up before the roid pops. With the state of the game today, just right click on the roid and select make bookmark, then when you warp back, you can warp to 0 on the roid and continue mining. A recent trick I've found is to make a bookmark 200km from the asteriod belt. Then warp there, then warp to the roid you want from the overview....lets you select ANY roid in the belt from a single bookmark.

You are reading a guide that is YEARS out of date...
There used to be no warping to 0, the closest you could warp was 15km to anything, so using that technique you are setting up a bookmark directly on the asteroid...
Please stop using that guide, as I am fairly certain everything in it is WRONG.

Apparently veldspar can be compressed? Can I do this to fit more in the Badger for the run to sell it?
Also cos it's going to take DAYS to train for a cruiser!
I am however managing to concentrate on uni work slightly more now I'm not being jumped every 20 mins

This is the guide you want:
Halada's The Complete Miner's Guide
If you look at the top thread in the New Citizen's Forum (the one you are in now) - this guide and others can be found there.

Edited by: Kaisen Hayato on 10/04/2009 17:35:14 Another thing, all the guides say mount two miners on the frigate, but then what do you do when you get jumped every half hour? Just tried it and lost my bantam, was trying to take them on with the railgun on my badger.

Yup 2 or 3 rats jump in about every 20-40 mins...
But do you get dense veldspar in .8? This is barely lucrative as it is!
Also just had my Miner II stolen from my bantam wreck, so that's another 400k ISK for a new one :(

If the 4 days or so required to get into a cruiser is a big problem for you, maybe you should look for a different game with faster results...
EVE is a very long term game, if you want to succeed you need to be patient.
That aside, you can find veldspar in all systems, the difference between the named and the base is at most 10%, and with the miniscule amount you are mining right now that is not going to make much of a difference especially if you are constantly losing ships. Find a 8.0+ system and mine there.
Mineral compression is only possible using the industrial capital ship (rorqual), so is not something a newbie is going to have access to. Your best bet is to do some market research and just set up sell orders in your station, if the price is right people WILL buy it.

I laugh when advanced players stop their ships at 15km. It must be cause show info says that "optimal range" is 15km, they should think they get more yield or something LMAO
I approach all that I can to the roids on the middle of belt. This is the best way to get as much asteroids as possible on range.

Best way I do it is
-I move my camera to look straight down on my ship and zoom out a bit -turn on tactical overlay -scroll mouse over mining laser/strip miner to show the range -move the ship on a course that will cover the most asteroids in the range circle -while moving as soon as any rocks come into range start mining -once in position, save then lock most valuable rocks the put on Pinky & the Brain on 2nd monitor

my tactic:
if more then a third of the belt is more then 15k away, your doing it wrong. cource in 0.0 the belts are flippin wierd shapes, somtimes its best to get 30 mates and steamroal from one end of the belt to another.

Also just had my Miner II stolen from my bantam wreck, so that's another 400k ISK for a new one :(
I fit my Bantams and Navitas' like this:
Highs - 2 best named Lasers I've got laying around Med - One after burner, One Shield booster Lows - 2 Cargo Hold Expander I's. Drones - 1 Hobgoblin
Drones I and Scout Drones I (which takes maybe twenty minutes to skill) will let you cary a light drone. That drone will kill the rats while the shield booster keeps you from popping.
For my Industrials
Highs - 1 Salvager and a Miner or Tractor Beam Med - Various Shield Tanking fits depending on the ship Lows - as many Expanded Cargo Hold II's as I can Hold - as many GSC's as it will hold.
The drone is more than capable of defeating any threat you face in high sec. All you need to do - is to be able to tank the rats long enough for the drone to kill them.
It is important that you don't just SIT THERE and let the rats shoot at you. Turn on that afterburner and orbit your industrial. A moving frigate with an afterburner on is much harder to hit than one sitting still. Train up Shield Compensation and the Shield Booster will use less of your capacitor.
All mining frigates and barges are Shield Tankers. So are all Industrials. That is because they use their low slots for Cargo Hold Expanders or Mining Laser Upgrades or something to augment their CPU or PG.
If you are having trouble tanking them then you need to develop you support skills. Of course - developing your drone skills (especially Drone Interfacing) will do wonders for the drones performance.
As a miner - your weapon is - your drones. Do NOT carry mining drones until you get into a Covetor or a Hulk - which can carry both 5 combat drones and 5 mining drones.
Fitting a weapon on an Industrial is largely a waste of time. It takes to long for them to loc and the ship is to sluggish. If you put a rail gun on it, the rats can close and orbit you faster than the rail gun can traverse - and you won't hit them. Rail guns work great on missions and ratting where you have a frigate or destroyer with a good after burner so that you can kite the rats along behind you and kill them from outside their range - but an Industrial isn't going to kite anything.
One of the best ores you can mine right now is Veldspar. There is plenty of Veldspar in 1.0 and .9 systems where there are no rats. Mine in those systems until you feel bold enough to go out into lower systems again - then see how well your drone and tank do against the .8 rats. If you're doing fine - then you can go down into the .7 systems etc.
Don't fit or fly anything you can't afford to lose. Thus - if you can't afford to lose Miner II's - then don't use them. If your Mining frigate can't fit the tank and the Miner II's - then dump the Miner II's. Better that than losing your ship AND the Miner II's.
I have killed Destroyers in .4 space with the single Hobgoblin I carried on my Tormentor. So you shouldn't have any trouble with anything in High Sec. once you get your skills up some.
Also - the idea that you can't make enough money in .8 space is absurd. Your mining Lasers don't go through rocks fast enough for that to really matter. The rocks in 1.0 and .9 are big enough. Once you start using Strip Miners ... then it might begin to matter - but even then you can mine in 1.0 and .9 profitably - and not have to deal with the aggravation for rats if you don't want to.
You get Dense Veldspar in 1.0. Not that it's that big a deal. Concentrated Veldspar has 5% more Tritanium in it than plain Veldspar and Dense Veldspar has 10% more. So it's not like it really makes all that much difference.
When I was new and didn't know any better, I'd run around and only mine Massive Scordite. If I'd spent more time mining and less running around I'd be richer.

Prior to mining a system for the first time, scout it out with a fast ship, a frigate or even better, a shuttle. Keep a bookmark in your hold to jettison. Warp in, use the tactical overlay to move into position on one end, targeting the last rock in the belt, and then start moving towards the other end of the belt. One you are 13km or so from that rock, stop, jettison the bookmark, and bookmark the can. Rename it, I use - <System Name - Belt #> with a, b, c, added for additional warp in points. Pick up the bookmark in your jetcan, target the closest rock, and move away again until you are 13km or so again. Repeat the process until you have several warp points to maximize efficiency. If in a slow ship like a mining barge or exhumer, I'd also scout a secondary point about 200km away to warp to, then warp back to the next mining position. If you spend an hour or so, you can scout positions for several belts in a system, saving time once you clear the belt or if somebody else is mining there already.
