Dig around a little. Sansha was, simply put, insane. Spikes may have the secondary function of sensor arrays and whatnot, but Sansha was mostly going for the "Oh-God-I'm gonna-die" reaction from his targets, that is to say, intimidating factor. And there are few ships as intimidating as Sansha ships.

Sansha was mad, but it was more insane as in "thinking in a manner that's decidedly disturbing for regular humans".
For example...
Originally by: Phantasm Ship description As with other Sansha ships, not much is known about the origin of this design. Its form -- while harshly alien in shape -- bears the mark of extremely advanced physics research, lines and corners coalescing to form a shape whose resilience and structural integrity are hard to match. Coupled with advanced hardpoint technology and an extremely efficient powercore, the Phantasm's legendary status is well-deserved.

I always liked the Phantasm description for that reason. Even though it describes a physical, tangible thing, it hints at a broader conceptual point; that eerie, not-quite-human feeling you mention.
Still, I don't think the aesthetic effect can be discounted. Staring into the tangle of spikes and blinding floodlights that is the Nightmare is inevitably a bit...

Disconcerting.

I don't doubt that intimidation plays a part in Sansha design but I do reject the idea that he was insane. He was driven by an unstoppable purpose and self belief, the combination of which produced some of the most powerful vessels ever produced outside of the Jove Empire.
Insane? No. People do not recognise the incredible and terrifying force that is true determination. |
