Is it?
I mine with a Retriever with 2 Modulated Strip Miner IIs (with Veldspar crystals). Will the Mining Drone IIs increase yield substantially? There's 2 weeks training for them.

The short answer is no only thing that skill is good for is a certificate. Mining drones are rarely used except in guarded mining ops where you wouldnt need to use combat drones on the barges.
As a miner I would reccomend training astrogeology/mining barge to increase your mining yield as well as to make your way up to the Exhumers.
If you have a friend who mines with you or even an alt consider training the mining foreman skill for even more yield.
As for mining drones if you do find yourself with no need of combat drones then just use Harvesters
edit: sorry ignore my comment on the harvester drones. Back when I last used them drone bandwidth never existed due to their velocity and lower bandwidth mining drone I's are better

a full deck of mining drones is equivalent to one stripminer... and, are ore agnostic; therefore, you could have a hulk set up with crystals for basic ores and send the drones after the rarer rocks.
ofcource, you can s*** crystals, but nothing says AAGGAGAGA VELDSPAR EVERYWHERE like three t2 strips with t2 crystals... im pritty sure you can see the asteroids crying. :D
drones can really speed up large multy-hulk, tanked ops, but if your our on your own it will get expensive quickley.

Don't use mining drones with anything below a Covetor or a Hulk. Use Combat Drones unless you are in 1.0 or .9 space.
Hulks and Covetors can carry 10 drones. So you can have 5 of each.
You will get farther faster by developing your mining skills than by developing your drone skills - so - get some combat drones, then get your mining skills pretty much topped out - then worry about mining drones.
Of course - it's not that clear cut. Drones V and Drone Interfacing V will really make your combat drones much more effective.
Mining Drone II's are a good way to increase the output of an already maxed out ship. They also increase it's reach as they have more range than the mining lasers (though you have to choose here between reach and ore production as travel time is a real factor).
In short:
- Combat Drones are very important because they're the only weapon you have.
- Mining Drones are a nice to have that will contribute to your ore take.
You could mix your drones on a Retriver but that would just cut down on your combat power and not help your mining much. For myself, I prefer to kill the rats as quickly as I can so I can salvage them from my industrial, get that over with and go back to the business of hauling rocks.
If I were you - I'd put those two weeks into helping to get myself into a Covetor before I'd worry about getting better mining drones for my Retriever.
