The size of the planets is actually rendered correctly. They look small only because of our perspective (high altitude). The fact that it's difficult to get properly close to the planet with the current mechanics works to enforce the problem.
I once outfitted an inty to fly 11km/s and fly all the way to the surface of a planet, the horizon did nearly become a straight line, but it's difficult still to get a proper perspective as the planet develops a big hole in the middle as soon as you breach the surface. The ships need to properly interact with a planet! and not fly through as if they are an optical illusion. It's a HUGE immersion breaker. How many times have you not read on these very forums, players showing the game to their friends, and the friends going "What?! Did you just fly straight through a planet??"
CCP need to come up with a workable solution to the warping and flying through planets, the background story they 'hacked' into place to explain it just doesn't work. Get a mathwiz to workout a formula for a curved warp path that will take the ship around planets and make them solid at the same time. It shouldn't be very taxing on cpu, such a formula should be fairly simple in computations if done correctly. ==================================================
I should really get a sig. |

Visuals and lag have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Everything visual is done locally by your own computer, not over the internet.
Some games do have that problem, but that's usually because the developers are too lazy to include abstract collision detection.

That would be why CCP recommend that everyone turn effects off during large fleet fights.

keep in mind that in space, the majority of the planets are going to dead ugly rocks. however i do agree that we need nice beautiful planets to look at. i have only seen a few nice looking ones and there could be a better variety of them.
actually this could go for a lot of things. it would be nice to see more structures and signs of life around space.

Originally by: nails Ya see, they need to bring all of the other planets in EVE up to date, not just w-space planets. Right now the plantes are big sacks of bland, everything is low res, overly gassy, and overly cloudy. I remember the Planets that looked like Jupiter, then they removed them and replaced them with these colorless slacks of bland. EVE graphics are not up to date till they replace all of the current planet textures high res planet textures, that actually look epic!!!

I'm still waiting for them to scale everything up so I can get the sense of awe when I see stations/gates/capitals/etc.

I think that would be difficult, as feeling a sense of 'scale' is neigh impossible with no point of reference. You'd have to have some way to define perspective first. Right now, most players are dealing with this. In that image, is the sun REALLY that small? Or does it simply look that small due to the way the shot is aligned?
Changing the camera angle might be a start. Simply adding a new camera which acts as sort of a 'first person' view. We're not talking ****pit/command deck, but where the camera is looking OUT from the ship, instead of in towards it. Same center of rotation, just different direction. This *might* help.
Ambulation could also go a long way, especially if players could get a better reference for just how big things are. If, by chance, you could have a regular old drone on display in your shop, and you find that the thing is nearly twice as tall as a human being? Well, that would also give you a little more sense of the size of things.
As far as planets go, we all seem to want images like this. Having flown into a planet before, the size is definitely far smaller than it should be. No doubt. But we'd also need to be able to work in closer to it.

There are back story reasons for that. I'm just too lazy to look it up. Similarly, the reason out ships act like they are in a liquid environment is because of the drag their warp engines make on the fabric of space around them.
Anyone know the story behind this stuff?

ok. take 1X20kms interceptor. warp to planet at 0 engage MWD and fly directly in direction of planet.
its freaky but i used to keep a couple of loot containers inside a planet

That is i think a complicated matter. Purely visually, whether you run at shader 2 or 3, low or high textures, it doesn't matter at all, that just comes down to what your PC can handle, and even then, it doesn't cause lag, it causes a low framerate. Something very different.
That specific issue is, i think, because with effects off the server doesn't have to send you the information about what other ships are doing. With effects off, the only updates the server needs to send you are when a ship explodes, or status updates about your fleet structure or locked targets. With effects on, the server has to send you all the data of when and where any given ship is firing. The resolution and graphics of the effects are of no consequence whatsoever, it's purely the direction and timing of the effect.
