hello Krazee, 
I currently fly a BB and simply love it. It is perhaps the most underated cruiser type around as well as been left on the shelf since the agility of the ship was nurfed a couple patches back. But I will insist that this does not make the ship any for the worse. The BB was my first cruiser and I have use of all Minmitar and Caldari cruisers. Though Caracal is by far probably the fastest killer of ANY cruiser, BB rates still an awsome preformer and a fun ship to fly as well as easy to outfit with low level engineering, electuical and navigation skills. Here is my set for low-mid level pilots, and I hope this helps. 
High Slots.
3 Heavy Launchers (named if you can use Malkuth being lowest XR-3200 highest)
1 250mm Rail. (Alpha or compressed being the best) Use Iridium.
NOTE: I do not use defenders as there is no need.. know your range and use your Velocity indicator (option in scanner set up)in scanner. Rail gun primarily used to "pull" as well as hamper mobs repair rate. Mobs will stop short and hold now days.
Mid Slots.
3 Cap 1 rechargers
1 Medium Shield booster (preferebly named if you can)
1 10Mn Afterburner (preferebly named)
1 10Mn MWD
NOTE:.. Set AB to repeat and MWD to auto. Use velocity indicator on scanner to "pulse" your MWD when the mob pulses thiers. This keeps range as well as saves cap power. Make sure to set your Shield booster to manual as well. Shield boosters main focus is to heal you if by some slim chance something like a Mortifier or Erasure gets too close.. :)
Low slots.
1 Power Diagnostics 1
1 Ballistics Control Unit (nice if you get dread ballistics)..lol
And thats it!. Ive used hardeners, Ive used armor tanking, Ive used shield recharge/tanking.. Ive used bla bla bla.. The set up above has been the most rewarding and enjoyable.
Flying a BB is a rare breed it seems anymore but I think that you will respect its abilities more once you outfit as above. It even gets much nicer when your skills get up and you find those named I spoke of.

well. YOU want to be the pirate. Nevermind the set above as this would probably get you mangled.
