Since it is extremely profitable everyone started spamming locals with 999 scam contracts. As for today this scam gives around 5 bil/day with 23/7 automated posting bot. People are so dumb and never learn.

Scamming is not out of control, stupidity is.
If players paid attention to the contracts when accepting them? But do NOT feel bad for idiots. It doesn't do our society any good.

You know what the funny part is? That bot scammed ISK is sold through RMT, the idiots that got scammed buy the ISK (again) and end up with money out, ISK out and possibly a ban once the GMs clean up the RMT network. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Well, it is annoying when local is completely unreadable. I like chatting in local, but now it is almost impossible and block list does not help.

Agreed. But then again, I find the spam no more annoying than the morons bragging about killboard statistics or calling each other cowards.

The dude spamming .999 contracts or the dude telling the rest it was a scam.
Solution: I stopped watching local.

Pretty much this. If I were to bother with local, I'd just have to block the spammers, but this inevitably means blocking the scam-whiners as well since they use up as much — or more — "local bandwith" as the spammers.
It's sad to see that stupidity is so rampant that these blatantly obvious scams are worth spamming, and it's even more sad to see that the only counter some people can come up with is to spam as much themselves (but without the humorous content), rather than using the mechanics provided to deal with the original spam… ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Agreed. The only reason to watch local is to see if war targets or pirates are in or coming into a system. Else it's a complete waste of time and intelligence.

I don't get how those 999 scams succeed. Wouldn't anybody who has billions of ISK in their wallet have learned by then to read contracts carefully? I'm guessing they just bought the ISK, and if that's the case I don't have a lot of sympathy for them...
I very much like the idea of clever con men going around scamming people out of their ISK. That's a fun element of the game I think. But, that said, the 999 "scam" barely deserves the dignity of being called a scam... I wouldn't be opposed to changes that forced scammers to be a bit more creative. More complex scams are a lot more interesting than just preying on lazy readers.

I dunno. I almost fell for it once because it does mess with your eyes for a second. If you have a habit of clicking "accept" as soon as the contract you want opens then I can totally see how you may get scammed with it once. Luckily for me I do read contracts and I do not now nor have I ever had 999,999,999+ ISK in my wallet.

At certain times of the day, several public channels become very difficult to hold conversation in.
Such as the Empire channels - Amarr, Gallente, Minmitar, Caldari.
Full of people spamming their scam contracts. Lots of them doing that 999 trick, and several doing it at such regular intervals, it looks like a bot.
Now, you can use the block list, but that ends up so full, that if you accidentally click the tab, it takes forever to load, because there;s no way to empty the block list. You have to do it one name at a time.
So, what's needed, is a better block list.

Last time I tried, I could just select all and rclick→remove. Takes a while to process, though, if the list is long. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

People & places? or via the Evemail block list?
Cos people&places, I can select multiple, but right click doesn't offer the "unblock" option while Evemail block list, I can select multiple, and right click "remove selected", but FOR SOME REASON, the right click only selects one character, so you STILL have to do it one at a time.

You are both right. The number of really really stupid scammers rises also everyday.
I would like an option to block all contracts and URL from local.

THAT would be nice. Allow us to block links in a channel.
On a side note, I would be really happy if we could send instant messages, hahaha. /Tell. Mail is nice, but the mail mechanics are pretty boned. Channel communications are great, but we can't merge channels, and sometimes you just want to talk privately. Instead of opening yet ... another ... window, we could just send a one-way message.

Wierd. It was quite a while since I did this to clean out all the SAK isk spammers, and back then it was certainly possible to mass-unblock people (or I'd still be doing it to this day). There's still a work-around though, albeit a messy one.
Select all in your block list and drag them over to the Buddies tag. By adding them to your adress book, you remove them from your block list, and you can then go into the buddy list and finally remove them from there. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

While I do agree that it's easy to avoid by simply looking at what you buy, I do get how some do fall for it, as I have years ago bought overpriced stuff from the market because I didn't pay attention.
While maybe a 10,000,000 ISK shuttle isn't in the same category as a 1 billion faction hardener, it is easy to miss out on the gui sometimes for various reasons.
But it is indeed very annoying with the constant posting, but I just discovered that 'block' option and it works out nicely until hopefully CCP fixes the spam issue - or the GUI issue with contracts.
Until then I have my two ways of avoiding ending up losing ISK. 1) Block the constant spammers and 2) Shift off my ISK to another wallet division or alt. Hard to buy something for 1B when there's not that much ISK in the wallet (when playing drunk obviously).
Altho, I did see a pilot ask in local why he couldn't accept the contract, he clearly knew he had the 2 million ISK the seller asked for that hardener... but the contract still wouldn't be accepted - so not having 2 billion ISK in the wallet have been proven to work

How about forcing some GMs to monitor trade hub locals and trade channels and make them ban isk seller at least? Would clean a bit of the spam...
I still don't find it amusing that CCP supports scams - it ruins the social interaction of the game

Maybe only 1 post every 60 seconds in trade hubs... and the block feature needs to be expanded... if more than 50% of the folks in local have you blocked... you are perma blocked in that System.. FOREVER!
