My mining laser has a 3 min. cycle time. So, the miner will stay running even if the asteroid runs out. I have seen smaller returns when this happens. Let's use veldspar for an example:
I had a rock that was 325 m and the info on that rock said the radius was 162.6. Since veldspar has a .15 volume, is there a way to calculate how much ore you will get before the rock is consumed and in a way that you can time it to shut off the miner and mine some other rock.
Hope this makes sense.
Thank you in advance.

you need to use an survey scanner, radius doesn't have an exact correlation to volume remaining. _______________ <Q> QUANT Hegemony QUANT is rebuilding, EVE-Mail me for recruitment info. Item Database |

You need to fit a survey scanner. It will tell you what quantity of ore is in each asteroid it scans.
Experience will tell you what quantity of ore you bring in per cycle. When the quantity in the targeted rock is less than the quantity in a full cycle you estimate what percentage of a cycle that is and short-cycle your laser accordingly.
For example, I'm mining veld right now and getting almost 11.8K/laser/cycle.
If I see that a rock is down to 9K or so I'll try a 3/4 cycle. If 5-6K its a half-cycle.
But, while I will short-cycle to mop up after large rocks that have given me many cycles I won't even start mining in a belt that has nothing but 1-cycle and 3/4 cycle rocks (though I may invite a corp mate who uses Miner II's to come and enjoy).
Hope that helped.

Or you could calculate it precisely. Each ore type has a different volume pr unit. And each miner module has a m3 pr. cycle.
But yeah, fit a survey scanner.

...
True.
But since you'd be looking at the green circle on the laser and guessing when the correct fraction of time is up anyway, using empirical figures obtained from actual mining works well enough. :)
