Hi
I am currently doing lvl 3 missions, and using Heavy Missiles(HML).
It is necesary or recommended to use a Target Painter in order to achieve better shots to frigate/cruiser ships?
Thanks in advance

For heavies, no. For Torps and T2 cruise yes.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

Edited by: Emerhyz on 14/04/2009 13:19:21 Yes, with target painters, cruiser sizes get to perfection when you strike'm with Heavy Missiles. As for frigates, it helps lots.
Another interesting tactic that I use with TP's is that, you have more range with TP's for drawing in the really annoying 60+km ships. Paint them, once they agro you, take the paint off and they'll appoarch you.
Edit: If you are using a drake for level 3's...losing a mid slot for TP is fine - Your tank should be enough already.

Skills that will help are Target Navigation Prediction and Guided Missile Precision.
Target painters have a max effective range of around 30km, plus a falloff range of about 30km, depending on the quality of TP you use. They are effective, altho more effective with Cruise Missiles since the missile nerf, as cruises are slower and thus can use all the help they can get on smaller than BS targets.
If you've trained your skills up, you may not notice a large difference with the TP, but if your skills are low, the TP may be just the ticket for you.

That's 42+78km with L4 skills, 45+90km with L5.

I use a TP for my heavies, and when shooting frigs it's like having an extra launcher, so it does help. It also helps my drones, and I can also use it to pull a new group of rats while I'm still shooting the current ones to speed missions up. Very, very useful. On bigger ships, TPs are basically a necessity, and on a Golem I have 2 of them.

I run L4 missions with my Drake and I've run a bunch of tests and find a Target painter isn't worth it for Heavy Missiles.
I tested it on Cruisers and BCs and found no significant DPS increase. Heck in some cases the blob damage remained identical. I had a T2 Target Painter. I'd post numbers if I had them but I'm currently at work.
I never need to shoot at Frigates (I use T2 Hobs) so I didn't test it on them, and I already 1-hit kill Destroyers.

Tp's do help but as stated already, mainly for cruise & torps.
They're also a god send for Large guns as well as they'll balloon up a frig/cruiser sig quite nicely thus making it easier for your guns to track/hit ______________________________________

My perspective is from doing Level 4's with a Cruise Raven.
I have TNP and GMP 4 and a PWNAGE significantly increases DPS versus all targets. Surprisingly even BS go down much faster with a painter. I don't undock without it.
Using T1 drones, I've noticed that they kill most frigates much faster if I paint them. Medium drones actually become viable versus most frigates when painted.

Funny show info on my target painter II in the even client shows 42km with an 84km falloff...
Also if target painter range is what you said it was, how are the usefull for cruise setups? cruise is long range, if you are fighting in 30km range you should be running torps.
Anyways your information is wrong.
(and i am well aware that a PWNAGE is better then a Tech 2 but i dont have cap/fitting issues on my golem so run the cheaper unit. i run 0 cap mods and am fine so its really not an issue)

TP are effective, and long range 42+78km Meta 4 is better than T2 as it uses less cap.

PWNAGE amd Painter II have identical ranges; base is 30 km optimal plus 60 km falloff. The skill Long Distance Jamming adds 10% per level to optimal, and the skill Frequency Modulation adds 10% per level to falloff. With level 4 in each, that takes it up to 42 km optimal and 84 km falloff. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |
