there is no hard and fast set of rules for ransoming, basically the idea is you want to make it financially worth their while to pay you instead of losing their ship.
ps what cyclone are you killing that drops 10m in loot?
and lastly, page 2. lol.

Better to ransom high and hope they are well fit and will pay, than ransom low and let a big payout get past.
Anyway, I prefer killmails to the ransom.

This is a simplification. You're also selling them on the idea that it's financially worth their while even if it may not be. You want to intimidate them, you want to rush them.

I may or may not have gotten away with 35mill ransoms for 170mill drakes once or twice. This is unconfirmed.
I will not be wandering around black rise anymore, for sure.

Always worth a shot to over ransom.. I mean, for 10M I'd prefer the killmail but for 80M..... (Actually, I'd still prefer the killmail..)

People only pay ransoms until someone kills you anyway. Which just happened to me. The bad part is I had insurance and didn't even know it, so the ransom wasn't worth it to begin with.
I've paid ransoms lots of times before, happily. I will never pay a ransom again, people just don't keep their word anymore.
*Edit* I'm on the wrong char here, my Exlorn char got blown. I'm not trying to hide it.

Don't kid yourself, there doesn't need to be a reward for people to gang up on someone else. Just ****ing them off is reason enough. I'm old school I guess. I always thought there was a code and if the ransom was paid you could go. They get to keep some of your loot and mods, so if the option is no ransom they are going to blow you. I've paid plenty of ransoms. Not anymore though.

A couple of points:
1. Yes, over-priced ransoms are a bit silly, but then some folks will just pay without thinking.
2. Dishonouring a ransom is pretty lame, but also a very effective way of poisoning a competitor's fishing grounds. Just spend a few weeks there, taking the money and getting the killmail and the neighbourhood gets a bad reputation - the local pirates who normally honour their ransoms don't get as many as victims become accustomed to getting blown up anyway.

Surely its better to start high and find a good medium though.
I have had plenty of situations where people have paid way over the price of purchasing and refitting a new ship.
Maybe sentimentality comes into it, particularly in the case of a carebear ratter in his first shiny ship. It could also be laziness in terms of the hassle of buying a new ship, plus mods etc.
Ship scanners are a must for determining a price though, especially as the chance of one nice faction mod dropping could be worth the risk vs the little payout for the ship.

Ransoms are still paid by people, at least for real pirates. Only pirates wannabes deshonor ransoms and they are easily spotted... unclear SS, not in pirate corp, or just for 2 days or the like...

Originally by: Teamosil Edited by: Teamosil on 15/04/2009 02:45:39 As I understand it, for a ship ransom price to be viable it needs to be lower than the cost of replacing the ship, buying new insurance, and replacing it's modules minus the insurance payout, and it needs to be higher than the value of the loot the pirate would get from blowing up the ship. If it's over the price of replacing the ship, the victim won't pay and if it's under the value of the loot, the pirate wouldn't offer it. Right?
For example, if I'm flying around in a cyclone, the cost of replacing it after insurance is about $25m and the loot would be worth about $10m. So the range where a deal could potentially be struck would be $10m to $25m. Probably at the lower end if the victim has no reason to trust that the pirate will honor it and probably at the higher end if they do. Anything outside of that range would be a losing proposition for one party or the other and would be rejected.
But in actuality it seems like people consistently ask for a ransom somewhere between 2 and 10 times the cost of replacing the ship... Which is why nobody ever pays ransoms... Am I missing something? Is ransom just being used as a means to sucker nubs with bad math skills? Or do pirates figure every ship is loaded up with t2 rigs or something?
Pod ransom is a different animal because you have no idea what implants the person has or how much of a pita it will be for them to be sent back to wherever their clone is. So that ends up just being some kind of guessing game based on how old the player is and whatnot, but I imagine that most times the pod is worth less to the player than the ship. People with expensive implants typically don't wear them in situations where they might get blown up.
Unrealistic randsoms is an indicator that your deal with an immature pirate who has no clue what he is doing.
First, a pirate never blows up a paying customer.
Second, a good pirate never makes unrealistic demands. After all, he wants to get paid!
Third, after payment is received a good pirate will fulfill his end of the bargain and let his client go. After all, he wants future targets to be paying customers!
If a pirate is unrealistic or blows up his paying clients then he will not be a successful pirate since no one will trust him on his word and they all will then refuse to pay, period! If he is going to kill you why pay him to do it? Just let him take the ship and use the money to buy another ship.
I have a friend who was ganked by 7 pirates at a low sec gate camp in his Hurricane. They blew up his ship and held his pod for a 20 million random. He basically told them to take a hike. They already blew up his ship. He said he would have gladly paid the randsom if they hadnt blew up his ship.
Simple as that.

No humble pie here. I know a bit about piracy. If you took the time to read the link I posted you would see exactly what I have said being restated by an EVE experienced pirate.

You know a bit about piracy do you. Really? Your resume seems to be lacking in details.
This is a discussion about Piracy in Eve and not Piracy in Hello Kitty. So unless you have experience concerning piracy in Eve and how it is done by the big boys all that is going to happen is that we get to make fun of you.
The link you gave is nothing but a link for PvP in Eve. And you need to modify your statement "being restated by an EVE experienced pirate" to "being restated by, who in my opinion is, an EVE experienced pirate".
