Hello everyone,
I've decided to purchase a POS for our mining / manufacturing corp which has only recently moved out into 0.0. It is our first POS and we plan to use it to moon mine and refine, but as it is out first i want to run past a spec to see what the community thinks. The setup is:
Tower:
Weapons / Defences:
- 1x Large Railgun
3x Medium Railguns 2x Small Rainguns 1x Web Battery 1x Warp Disruptor 2x Shield Hardeners (EM and Explosive)
Moon Mining:
- 1x Moon Harvester
1x Coupler 1x Silo
Other:
- 1x Refining Array
1x Corp Hanger 1x Ship Maintenance Bay
Hopefully, all that will come to about 400-500mil (not done a price check yet) but i wondered if it was sufficient. Does it need more defences? If so i need to take something else off the tower (probably ship maintenance).
Also, stupid question, but the guns just say then require hybrid charges. Is that just standard t1 charges you would use on ships or some special charges for towers?
Your thoughts and Surgestions are welcome provided they are constructive. -Ballistic Gold

To me, and this is just my opinion, 0.0 seems a little risky for your first POS setup. Are you part of an alliance? Do you have or have access to Capital pilots? Who else is in the system you are looking to set up in? If you are not part of an alliance, or have anyone dedicated to defense (cap pilots and POS gunners) this seems like a small POS and will easily be picked off (costing you 1/2 a billion isk). I would think about .4 or .3 space first, and then go from there. If you are dead set on 0.0, think about going with a large tower, and lots of Autocannon/Artillery (as they don't use CPU). Best of luck to you.

We have joined an alliance out in 0.0 but as of yet i am unsure of their capabilities but i am sure they have cap pilots.
How much would we be talking for a typical 0.0 POS setup with a large tower with the reletive defences and equipment cost? About a bil? |

I have read here in the forums a lot of ideas on what to do with POSs. I unfortunately dont have any direct links to help you. Contact me directly and I will find and send them to you.
I presume you surveyed your moon before you dropped a POS there. :) Useless to moon mine a moon with nothing in it.
From what I've read and understand your setup doesnt need a ship maintenance bay.
Refining arrays have a penalty to materials but if your system has an npc refinery, best to use that.
If you are a manufacturing corp, I dont see any assembly arrays here.

Not sure as to the monthly cost, but here is a link for a POS calculator. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=557482 Monthly cost can vary widely depending on how much Ice mining you plan on doing.

That is a great point, in my haste i seem to have left that out.
Originally by: Seth Lorethian a large tower will cost your corp about 200M/month in fuel and maintenance costs
That is alittle out of our range at the moment to jump right in at that expence (infact, i dont know if thats expencive to these guys, im just the pvper/defence guy with the isk lol), unless the minerals mined from it make that much. We are planing on ice mining the materials to run the POS however. |

As for charges for guns, it is the standard charges, with one difference. Large guns require ex-large ammo (charges), Medium guns requires Large ammo (charges), Small guns-Medium ammo (charges). Cost of the POS, might run close to a billion, but if you are in industry, you should be able to recoup that using a Large POS.

Once you add in assembly arrays, your medium tower will likely run out of cpu and/or power by my calculations.
Ice harvesting only provides the isotopes, strontium, liquid ozone, and heavy water. You still need to get the other control tower fuel from somewhere.

replace the hardeners and coupler with guns Use faction ammo in the guns I expect you will be disapointed by the refining yield Medium towers need about 20 mil a week of fuel, usually the hard part is hauling fuel to the tower

1. Refining arrays are useless for anything but ice, the yeild says 35%, that means at MAX skills you'll only get 35% of the ore you put in back. You LOOSE 65%. 2. Unless you have people with Starbase Defense Management AND you have a large tower, you'd want to just use hardeners to the max to just prolong the POS attack. Unless you focus fire and have enough large guns to kill a dread guns are useless in 0.0. Hardeners are the way to go. 3. Use Railguns & Artillery guns, navy EMP ammo and CN Antimatter for the ammo (faction) if you do use guns 4. web batteries are useless, dreads won't be moving, and if you have anything smaller then a large you won't be able to fit enough guns to kill one. 5. You don't need a coupler, just connect the moon miner directly to a silo.

You'd only get 35% if you had absolutely no skills at all. Apparently someone forgets that there are skills which increase refining yield.

No, I think you're overlooking something, Arrow. On the refinery arrays, there is a hard cap. If you have Refining V, Refinery Efficiency V, and XXX Processing V, you'd still only get 35% of the minerals back from that low-end refinery array. The cap doesn't apply to ice, so I understand, so you can get 100% refine of ice. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

With all due respect I think you really need to bone up on starbase defense management before setting up in nullsec. Lord Fitz has a definitive guide to this sort of thing that can be found here.
