Check battleclinic for Apoc Sniper builds (since you are amarr) and see what they fit. Plug that into EFT and it will tell you the skills to train. Off the top of my head
Amarr BS III min (I am at V myself) Large Energy Weapons V Large Beam Energy Weapons Hull Upgrades Targeting Long Range Targeting All Cap Skills (can't recall them right now)

Well the Apocalypse is the best Amarr sniper when it comes to range but it needs T2 large Beam lasers, a bit of a long train not to mention a ton of support skills!
A Zealot with beam lasers (tracking enhancers and tracking computers to increase range) with Aurora ammo gets around 130km, but requires T2 medium lasers and the ship itself adds yet more time.
With all that in mind, the best ship to begin with would be a Retribution in my opinion. You can get about 40+km, it's nimble and it starts you on the way to the larger T2 lasers needed. Not strictly a sniper but the T2 small mediums aren't too hard to train, and the other support skills to fly Assault Frigates are needed later on anyway (Need Assault Frigate IV to train for the Zealot).
Dig around for some fittings for the snipe Zealot or the Beam retribution and start enabling the use of T2 in the modules. Till then though get a pulse punisher on the go, great fun and cheap to setup. The PvP experience will be invaluable and you might find yourself changing your mind about what to train.
As for a fitting, could try something like this:
Retribution
Hi-slots: Dual Light Beam Laser II (Aurora S) Dual Light Beam Laser II (Aurora S) (eventually an offlined module for overheating) Dual Light Beam Laser II (Aurora S) Dual Light Beam Laser II (Aurora S)
Mid-slot: 1mn Microwarpdrive II (you want to keep range to snipe)
Low-slots: Mixture of Heat Sink IIs and Tracking Enhancers Whatever tank you can fit
Problem with Amarr is it shines with T2 guns thanks to Aurora and Scorch ammo. Be prepared for some lengthy training that's all!

The best thing you can do is target a ship type and go from there. The gunnery skills will help you shoot further and more accurately but the key to long range shooting is in the ships and the fits.
Ammar is a good race to go with for shooting since laser turrets are hands down some of the best overall guns in the game (There well rounded weapon systems).
Your young if your only 18 days but its good to look to the future in this game. I would target a set of weapons and ships you would want to use.
T2 Beams is a must for long range shooting and the Apocalypse is the only ammar ship with a real weapons range increase, There is also the zealot.
If your more into the idea of distance and not necessarily race, your better option is caldari since rail guns have the longest range in the game, even more so when fitted to caldari ships with range bonus such as the Moa/Eagle/Rokh.
Overall T2/High gun skills will take you a good distance in eve.

Most people I know (or rather, everyone I know) do not take snipers on missions since you usually end up warping into deadspace and can't control the distance well. Snipers are for PVP fleet ops and gate camps.

You'll be more efficient at killing shield tanked ships, obviously. But tachyon IIs do a hell of a lot of base damage to start with...

Edited by: Fellet on 20/04/2009 11:19:50 Please keep in mind when training amarr snipers :
You need good cap skills else you'll be out of the battle in a minute. Your gunnery support skills also need to be up scratch (atleast IV and ofcourse V for sharpshooter and controlled bursts) Also train weapon upgrades to V and advanced weapon upgrades to atleast III Train enginering mechanic hullupgrades to V ASAP there really important for your fitting. Electronic upgrades to V to to fit reactor control unit II's (apocs can be tight on pg)
Get some decent drone skill to atleast use medium armor bots , you will help your fleet members alot. Also train signature analysis to V for faster locking time Get some navigation skills so you can atleast use a 100mn microwarpdrive
As said before in this thread , work you way up through ship classes to get the feeling of sniping.
Harbinger: is a great medium range sniper with heavy beams and aurora Retribution: is alot of fun to learn to and there not to overly expensive zealot: quite an expensive ship for new player but worth every penny awesome sniping ship
