Basicly i can fly every Caldari ship apart from interceptors and command ships. My allience is currently at war and i want a cheap ship and setup for a decent small fleet/solo ship. I use missiles and have e-war skills.

the onyx and cerb arn't bad either tbh. Crow isn't bad but you cant fly ceptors, so no go there, drake is pretty decent and cheap.

Spend a week and you can use ceptors.
You obviously then also cant use dictors. But what kind of gangs do you want it for? If you fly with snipers a ferox can also be decent enough. ---------------------------------------------

You can use HAMs on a Cerb, but it's a pain to fit well due to powergrid restrictions. HML Cerbs make absolutely wonderful long-range anti-support while still sporting a decent tank; they make nice gang ships but they rarely do top DPS.
That last statement (nice gang ships, rarely top DPS) pretty much applies to all Caldari ships. Not many Caldari ships can 'do-it-all' very well, but if you distribute things like tackling and EWar between gang members they become really nice performers.
Some other tips:
Cruise Ravens can fill the same role as a HML Cerb, but they're not nearly as mobile so they tend to only get used in larger gangs.
Torp Ravens are pretty capable of taking apart other battleships in short order, but have a harder time with smaller ships. Think Blaster Mega with a 30km range.
Scorpions make very nice large-gang EWar ships because of their battleship-class buffer, low pricetag (compared to Caldari Recons), and (newly) long range ECM.
The Harpy and Eagle are both favorites of mine; they tend to not be very popular with a lot of pilots because of their limted DPS, but in a gang with close-range DPS/tackle support that large engagement envelope is quite an asset. Also, Harpy/Eagle + multiple scan-res scripted sensor boosters = wonderful gatecamp killmail *****s. Some pilots prefer these ships with blasters fit, but I'm a sniper at heart. Eagles also tend to be fairly survivable not because of their resist bonus or fits, but because of what I call 'The Ferox Effect' (i.e. who the heck primaries an Eagle?)
Interceptors are a very short train and are pretty much always useful because of their speed and tackling abilities. Flying Caldari in PvP while not being able to fly a Crow is borderline blasphemous. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

0.0 Combat is usually calling for Long Range HACs. - Get the Cerberus, Falcons/ Rooks, and Eagles. None of which are cheap and affordable, but provide over 100km range for combat.
HAM Drakes? Stupid, the more range you have, the more things you can shoot at, always use Heavy Missiles, not assaults, the light assault launchers are cool if you chose to focus on killing interceptors, but using Warrior IIs vs Interceptors is more effective while you lob Heavy Missiles at your larger targetes. Drake range is only about 70km w/o rigs, so it's not long range enough.
The 'cheapest' most effective ship will be the Cerberus - because it can survive, has long range, and is about as expensive as a battleship - 100million or so. The Eagle has no tank like Falcons and Rooks, so will die more and get primaried.
If you have nothing but the drake, do the passive tank setups, but try to use rigs that increase the range and speed of your missiles to get longer range.

Ferox is great fun in a small gang. Double sensor boosters, long range, decent alpha. Definitely train rails over missiles, instant damage hurts. cud either fit a tank, or a MWD, or some ewar really. Check it out. screw you guys, im goin home |

If your corp doesnt care much that your ship alligns a bit slower, you can just get a ferox to snipe with the hacs. And especially cheap since no one will primary a ferox when there are sniper hacs. ---------------------------------------------

Crow, Raptor, Flycatcher, Onyx, Cerberus, Zealot, (probably) Failcon/Rook.

Edited by: Cade Morrigan on 16/04/2009 18:41:54 Edited by: Cade Morrigan on 16/04/2009 18:38:37 I'm pretty sure he asked for "cheap" ships... not seeing the Cerb or Onyx as "cheap" but then again i'm a penny pincher :)
/edit: so yeah, OP, a cheap-ish pvp ship for solo would be the Drake although many will say there is no such thing as a good Caldari solo pvp ship. For even more cheapness play around with the Caracal in EFT, you can come up with some pretty fun stuff.
/edit: /edit: You mentioned ewar... Blackbird is fun too, and cheap. |
