It occurs to me that CCP might be missing a trick.
Billboards currently are fairly irrelevant, every once in a while someone will look at someone's bounty on it just cos it's shiny, once in a while people use it to read the news or perhaps watch the latest quafe advert. Player ads have been talked about for years but never materialized.
So...
What if CCP were to sell billboards as advertising space to real world companies in the same way that ads are making their way into the world of console gaming? Now I know advertising is the product of satan's loins...however; more money for ccp means more resources devoted to eve which is surely a good thing for all of us.
The only objection I see, beyond the moral one, is one of roleplay. For example, you wouldn't think pod pilots in the future we play in would be too interested in Mr. Muscle or Lloyds TSB: but what about those trillions of ficticious people living comparatively mundane existences on the planets in eve that we read new articles about?
To sum up my idea: sell advertising space on billboards to real world companies to increase revenue for CCP, which in turn increases the resources available for development of eve. There's a crapload of money to be had in advertising.

I wouldn't mind advertising on billboards.
But that is a far as I would want to see it going. I don't want Coca-Cola branded Megathrons.
Oh and I want the revenue to go towards reducing the sub fee.

Personally I'd be against this idea, manly because I feel it would really spoil the atmosphere in the eve universe if you bring in adds from RL.
However I do feel the billboards could be used a but more, say with maybe alliance adds or industry adds....applying that now might be hard but if you tie it in with walking in stations I think it could work, I'd quite like to see adds for Bars on the Billboards when I jump in system.

They should at least be advertising the products from the Eve-Store.

A while ago they stated that the billboards possessed some strange antiquated code in order for them to do what they do, furthermore the person who wrote the code had long left CCP. This is why if you warp to the location of one of the "need for speed" removed gates, you can find a solitary billboard floating in space doing nothing. I dont know if its changed since then, but it definitely explain why the content on the boards hasn't changed in forever.
Edit: as for additional billboard deliciousness, it would be nice to allow corporations to extend their corp advertisements so that they can show up on the billboards.
