Hi everyone
Been playing the game for about a month now and really really enjoying it. After mistakingly rushing my way up to battle cruisers i've realised the error of my ways and slowed down. I've got most my learning skills, and in just over a week will finish all the skills I need for my pvp rifter. I've decided frigates are the way to go -- zooming around the battlefield in a small fast ship is much more appealing to me than sitting in the back with the big guns.
After looking at all the ship classes that two that look most appealing to me are assault frigates and interceptors, however I can't find much in depth analysis on their roles that I can actually understand yet (Eve is hard!!!). What are the strengths of each of these ships? Are interceptors too niched for playing the game at this early a time? (eg, I want to play both the pve and pvp aspects of the game)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, or even a link to somewhere that deals with this =)
Ps/ Either way I go, it will probably be gallente, though minmatar is an option as well I guess.

Inties are mostly for PvP as high speed tacklers, though in recent patches they've been a bit outshone by heavy interdictors. They're very flimsy so they're not very good for PvE.
Assault ships are great for PvE but are a bit crappy for PvP. Unless working with a group of inties ironically. Roaming wolfpacks of inties and assault frigs are very cool.
Gallente assault ships are full of awesome for PvE. The Ishkur in particular is excellent for long term ratting in 0.0. I'm not too clued up on gallente inties, but I hear the Taranis is very good.
Both ships handle quite differently, so there's no real "logical progression" from one to the other. Personally I'd reccomend you go with assault frigs first before inties.

Welcome to Eve!
The above reply contains everything really, the only thing I would add is that I've seen the Ishkur used for solo pvp and it did quite well, not sure if it was the pilot or the ship.

An AF can eat a T1 frig for breakfast, and inties and most T1 cruisers also, but it will not be able to catch inties. A couple of AFs with an inty or two is very bad news for practically anything. I love the Taranis, but it is very much a do or die ship. You will need to get up to point blank range to get that DPS out and any other inty will manage to stay out of range and kill you. Any other T1 frig or cruiser you can do a lot of DPS (for a frig) if you manage to kill their drones. Just watch out for drone carriers like Vexors or Arbitrators, they will kill you with the 2nd wave. Finally, someone should make a really cool sig for me. |

I used to PvP in AF's until I realised that I can get the same results using t1 cruisers at a greatly reduced price tag, and when one loses ships at the rate I do, saving ISK is important. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

The 2point scram turning off MWDs was a big boost to AFs. Greedy cepters that get to close soon find that they are unable to get away.
Same goes for MWDing Cruisers for that matter.

I have many good memories of pvping in Jags.
Assault frigs are decent tacklers and decent fighters, but they are out performed in those specific roles by other ship types. However, if you are looking for something that still has decent speed but can take more hits and punch a bit harder then an inty, maybe assault frigs are for you.
oh and the Jaguar is an amazing AF. But I believe gallente interceptors are a bit better then minmatar.

Thanks for the replys everyone! It seems to me like assault frigates are the safer choice, and i've heard many wonderful things about the ishkur, so i'm going to train for that.

Ishkur is a very good ship. Make sure you train for T2 Drones before you start with it. It's quite possible, (if you pack a full set of warriors) to scare off some, if not all Interceptors. Hobs are Very Nice on Paper, but can be kited and popped by most Interceptors. In addition to this, you can mount a Mean Passive Shield Tank for PvE.

Eve is best this way:
1. Find out all skills / mods needed for use of a ship.
2. Train for those mods / skills.
3. Train for the ship
4. Use the ship.

You forgot:
5. Whine about how the ships you've trained for need buffs.
6. Whine about how other ships are better and try to get them nerfed.

If you want a real advice. Forget AF / inties.
Stick with T1 cruisers. If you are aiming for PvP (but they are good for PvE also) go with : Rupture / Vexor / Thorax / Caracal.
All are very good ships and they give you natural advance to BC. Also you will need 4-5 month of basic trainings at least to make them work correctly. But ultimately you will have Cruiser that is around 20-40 mill with 350-500 dps and around 20-30000 EHP and you will love it.
Also you will have almost all support skills trained for BC/BS which will leave you only with untrained DPS for them.
Also keep in mind, while all this progress of training is on going, cruiser costs 5-6 mil (insurable!), and AF costs 15-25 mil (not-insurable !)
My 5 cents

In general, this.
But, AFs have sex appeal that T1 cruisers just don't. Besides, I like flying around in my retribution; it's a nice little nugget of firepower and tank. |

One thing you all left out about PVP and PVE is that preparation is as important as choice of ship. A nice AF with the wrong mids and lows will get eaten alive by the T1 cruiser or dessie you run into. You have to plan ahead and know what your opponent is flying prior to going out. Kit up your ship to take advantage of his weaknesses and minimize your own weaknesses and once the fun starts it will all go your way.
Example, if you're caracal hunting you need to think, in normal configuration it will have a very strong shield tank and be loaded with medium sized missiles. It's armor and capacitor are relatively vulnerable.
To attack one you'd like a nos or two in the highs to foul up his shield tanking. Once the capacitor is gone there goes the shield booster. An AF not a cruiser will be able to avoid his medium missiles better. The medium and large missiles get a big penalty when engaging frigate sized targets. A sensor damp and/or an ECM burst will spoil the lazy missilers day when he looses his lock and can't reacquire it quickly. orbit at 500 - 1000m with AB on and you wont get hit very hard when he gets you locked.
Load EM or Thermal ammo to take down the shield tank faster. Explosive/Kenetic drones will suppliment damage once you're into his armor. An Ishkur will obliterate a Caracal in this scenerio. However the same setup running into a Thorax and using the same tactic will cost you your Ishkur and all it's shiny drones. The T-rax is an armor tank and a blaster boat. You take this Ishkur up close to the Rax and you soon see that you have the wrong ammo, wrong mids and wrong lows.
PVP is a little bit of guess work and preparation. PVE has the advantage of knowing in advance what faction you're up against, read the journal carefully and kit up appropriately and you can PVE level 3 and some level 4s with any AF easilly.
Now anyone who PVPs for a living in EVE soon learns to use some non-standard configurations in order to turn the tables on attackers who have kitted up for an easy kill. PVP can seem like rock-scissors-paper at times, what worked great today will fail miserably tomorrow.
