Every mmo has special attacks. why not eve?
The skill books required for these could either be manufactured, or dropped from npcs and then be traded, or not be traded anywhere at all. In the latter case they would have to be obtained by each player by themselves through playing the game (maybe by finding and working through special exploration sites)
To not make those special attacks imbalanced and not require alot of micromanagement either, they would only add a slight bonus for a rather short amount of time, when being used.
(maybe 5% to missile dmg for 5 minutes)
and they would come with a cool down timer.
would also make missioning and ratting a tad more interesting, since fighting npcs can be dull at times. (just activate your modules and let them run until npc is dead).
The skills needed for the special attacks would also reduce the cooldown timer or slightly increase the effect.

Ugh, I recall playing Age of Conan for 14 days and I also recall playing Wow for 12 days. What a bore imo, when special attacks has to be used all the time, constantly.
Besides, I feel confident that a substantial amount of players would concider quitting eve for good if special attacks were to be implemented. I mean throwing your computer out the window. Becoming a buddhist and maybe walk around in some cloth and a stick. Turn gay. Turn straight. Meet whoever youlike and not asking about their sexual preferance later on.

could you please read through my thread and not only the headline or is this to much asked for...
if i had written "combat buffs" instead of "special attacks" in the headline, im pretty sure you would have come up with a similar derail

What kind of rate of fire did you have in mind? 1min 10min 60min?
And I hope you realise, the faster ROF it has, my initial concern seem valid, and if the ROF is long it undermines imo your intention of making combat a tad more interesting.
Finally, what importance is "a tad more interesting" for you?.

Please give an example of a 'special attack', and why you think it would improve the game.
Personally, I think this sounds like a terrible idea. What would these special attacks actually represent?

stop the special attack thingy. Just use a better ship... or even better, you want challenge for your mission, use something less powerful. You'll find it less boring.

maybe a 20 mins reuse timer? it wouldnt be to much micromanagement that way i would think. But still would allow that one or the other extra bonus you could unleash during combat every now and then.

ok heres an example:
"Advanced Weaponry Control", when activated, increases the damage of your weapons by 5% for two minutes.
It has a reactivation timer of 15 minutes, which is visible somewhere on the edge of the UI, so that you know when you can use it again.
You need to train the Skill "Advanced Weaponry Power Burst" in order to use this special attack.
The Skill "Advanced Weaponry Power Burst" of course would have the one or the other prerequisite before you can even learn it.

no its not. its an additional feature, on top of overloading.
the difference is:
Overloading has no reuse timer, but damages your modules.
my proposed idea would not have any disadvantages, but you could only uses it after the reuse timer has run its course.

Are you searching for combat boosters?
Seriously, check what exists. Boosters gives you a bonus to something and comes with a penalty, if you choose the right one, the penalty will be neglectable compared to the bonus you get. -- Fanfest memories (the middle line might be inaccurate) : I looked in your eyes And I found the galaxy Now I'm stuck in eve.

I click a button and I get a bonus!
Oh that's so different from boosters...
Also, if this comes without counterpart, that's not inline with everything that exists unless considering it for more skills just for more skills to get the bonus.
Another misconception in your idea is the "they would have to be obtained by each player by themselves through playing the game". Eve has nothing like 'linked items to players' which is what you offer there. It may become another activity in exploration to go get the books, but in no way everyone would have to do it himself. -- Fanfest memories (the middle line might be inaccurate) : I looked in your eyes And I found the galaxy Now I'm stuck in eve.

When you make a recommendation that makes the game seem more like "every other MMO" you should be sure to put on your flame suit and get ready for the heat.
EVE players are very proud of the fact that EVE is not just another MMO.
To a fault sometimes... but in this case I happen to agree. I fail to see how "special attacks" would improve gameplay. Please elaborate.

Edited by: Sturdy Girl on 20/04/2009 16:22:18 No, actually, an unneeded idea has been discussed and dismissed. Not derailed. Derailed assumes that the idea was actually going somewhere in the first place.
Nerds? Well, maybe, but we are people who have played the game a lot, who understand the what is possible, what is needed, and what will or will not work. The regulars here generally have some level of insight into the likely outcomes of changes made, and I believe people have analysed your idea and pointed out its flaws (eg, it isn't needed as boosters already exist to do the kind of thing that you want).
You still haven't explained what this idea actually represents, however. What IS a special attack (not what is the gameplay mechanic going to be) but what is it supposed to BE?
EG, We can assume (thermodynamics aside) that all characters fire at the maximum rate they are capable, and do as much damage as they are able. Boosters might increase that (eg, increasing the maximum performance available through drugs, with %chance of drawback), as might overloading (increasing maximum performance through higher voltage, with heat damage drawback)... but what is a special attack?
'Increasing performance at this moment because the POD pilot decides he needs the 110% performance that he wasn't capable of before'...
So if this is what the special attack represents, why wasn't the pilot performing at this level all the time (since there was no drawback to not doing it).
There... I have re-railed and re-de-railed your thread again.
Happy now?

Im afraid to say that your the pathetic nerd. I don't think you didn't think about your own post. First you say that we need more bonuses. my solution is use a more powerful ship. Then you say its boring, well, use a less powerful ship. For example, use a cruiser or a battlecruiser t1 and go do level 4. <-- thats just 1 example.

then this one (the same pathetic troll again, this time hes expressing some overall negativity for whatever reason, without even trying to be constructive; and i bet if you look through his posting history, youll find alot more troll posts):

Yeah, but ignoring all the non-constructive comments, I've been quite reasonable in my criticism, no?
(Ok, I was a bit flippant with the Forumslap thing)
Basically dude, its not actually a terrible idea, but it needs more substance. Eg, it needs some drawback (overloading has its head damage, boosters have their %chance of some other drawback), or it would unbalance the game.
As an example: If it was combined with some sort of fatigue system, whereby you can up your performance for a period of time (like your 2 minutes), but fatigue starts to accumulate. Then, every time you activate (or re-activate) a module there is some a %chance of small delay (proportional to the fatigue), as the tiredness slows down your ability to process the situation.
Now, stop getting so upset dude. Its an internet forum where people get all militant about the slightest thing. This is doubly so of EVE. You just need to be a little less sensitive about it.

Entertaining.
You know the best policy with trolls is generally to ignore them. Don't dignify it, just respond to the real criticms... because you lose sight of them when they actually come along.
I would suggest you reread Sturdy Girl's post that you quoted... and didn't respond to... and work to flesh out your idea more. Should save you some white hair and deprive some silly goon in his mother's basement the sexual pleasure he gets from watching someone get flamed.

WOOOT thanks for your constructive input . Its actually the first constructive input in this thread, and i like it. Come on, why not implement such a system, including the described fatigue?
What kind of harm could it ever do to the game? Or could there be a slight chance, that it would open new possibilities for players and the game maybe? (such as farming for new items, new production activities, maybe involving new materials, or new expendeables that are needed to activate those "special attacks", much like the nanite paste)
