And in the end, they'll realize that they won't make more money with or without torrents. Movies and music was traded all over the world even before there was internet. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Meh. They can throw lawsuits around like candy if they want.
Fact is, Torrents are just links until they're downloaded. Hell - if CCP ran the world, this would be the same as Salvage. Its not copyright material until its downloaded. Thus, the site is never at fault.
Still, its not torrent sites that are overly bad. What about the huge file sharing sites like megaupload? You can find damn near anything on that if its popular. Now that IS hosting copyrighted material.

So now we're going to be forced to have tape-swaping parties again? Jesus, these companies are gonna throw us back into the stone age. Cripes, next thing you know I'll be pulling stuff off the radio onto 8-tracks and calling my buddies for copies of shareware games.

The difference is they usually act on takedown notices, whereas torrent sites usually don't. Like tpb's legal section. __________________

Most of what I torrent isn't actually available to buy. I've yet to see a DVD of Gurren Lagann or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei down my local blockbusters. And what about stuff that is broadcast anyway, giving everyone the opportunity to record it?
For example, a new episode of Lost airs in America, and Sky show it several days later. Why should I have to wait to watch it when I've already paid my Sky subscription? Why should I wait to watch a new Episode of Heroes on BBC2 when I've paid my TV license? The only difference between torrenting and taping is the timing. If I tape the whole series, I still wouldn't buy the DVD, I would still be able to watch it again at leisure, only this time, for reasons known only to copyright lawyers, it's not illegal. WTF? ____________________

Anyone who's ever had to live in a foreign country where the main language isn't English will appreciate torrents. If there's a TV show I want to watch my choices are to wait over a year after it's aired then watch it in badly dubbed German or torrent it. It's not a hard choice.

All this will do is cause the sites to become less public. Everybody who needs to find them will.
But thats actually good. The problem today is that everybody downloads stuff. It wasnt a problem when only a few computer geeks was doing it 5-10 years ago. Now it has exploded and become too large to be ignored. So it will go back to being small again, by making it difficult for "ordinary" non-geek people to find downloads.
I remember when I called a phone number and ordered games on 3.5" floppy disks. Those were the times. :)
I think the new technology after torrents will be file sharing through truly anonymous servers. Like Tor today, but with a much larger usage.
