Quote: Shield tanking dont suck either. Active shield tanking is FAR superior than active armor tanking. on top of that every ship passively shield tank to some degree( all ships regen shield passively to some degree but since the shield is the tank on caldari you can add the passive regen + active regen= total ship tank and on armor if its not be repped its not regening) Comparing active tanking mods and im not even going to be fair and use the largest non cap reppers cause i would make armor tanking look like epic fail. Large shield booster T2(w/o skills) CPU 115 PG 165 rep 240 every 4s( 60 dps repped) Large Armor repper t2 CPU 55 PG 2300 ( trying sticking this puppy on your t2 cruiser) Rep 800 every 15 (53.3 dps repped) ALL level 5: REPs 800 every 11.25 (71.1dps) Lets compare the BS armor repper to a BS Shield booster XL shield booster t2 CPU 230 PG 550 Rep: 600 every 5s (120 DPS) for the lovely fee of 55 cpu and 1 PG and a mid slot i can increase my shield rep by 36% or on the t2 XL ( 163dps repped). i havent even added in my passive regen that i get to add since it applies to my tank. with my skills on a drake with no fittings this would be 14.65 dps. this would make a large shield booster 4 dps less effective than a large armor repper at twice the cpu the same cap consumption and 1/10 of the PG. Why is armor tanking perferred then? it frees up mids for ewar/tackle/cap stuff Which is better? it depends on the race your flying and what your using it for. Tank v tank, shields will smoke armor tanks in all aspects.
Have a seat Thorian, so I can explain to you why most also prefer armor tanking.
It's called "Effective Cap Usage". Shield tanking has always been known as the "short burst" regen, however, armor tanks are able to much more effectively out last an active shield tank due to a more stable cap use. Now because of this, active armor tanks also have a better chance against nos/neuts as the player can time the neut/nos cycles with his rep cycles and conserve the charges. This is a little harder to do with shield boosters, as you find it harder to fit a cap booster with a proper tank. This makes active shield tankers much more susceptible to ships designed to remove cap. Hence why most ships that do well with active shield tanks tend to be ships with a boost bonus, and most players fit a booster a size smaller along with a pithi boost amp or the like. That's why your hawk does so well, is due to that bonus. Ships without the bonus find it harder. You could say the same applies to armor but in reality it doesn't, thanks in part to the time it requires to armor rep, you can balance cap out, along side how much easier it is to fit a cap booster along side it. __________________________________________________
