Turnout was a little lower than usual because of the ekonomeh and we have like 10 people who're simultaneously moving house, haha.
We usually have 25-30 Navy megas, 3-5 more rattlers, a few more navy apocs and fleet tempests and the odd pirate battleship thrown in.

TBH fitting 5 plates to get 100+ k armor is kinda silly unless youre baiting. 
With the state of pvp in eve (and some screenshots here are a good indication of what I'm talking about) you are better off doing more dmg than having more tank, because once your target's buddies come you're dead anyway.
But yeah, 100k armor is cool. You can get the same on just about any faction BS with such trivial approach ofc.

When you consider that buying a Navy Mega is just like buying two regular Megas (and a little more), you realize that a lot of people will pay that for the extra low slot.

not particularly; the 100k armor navythron is also pretty good for solo vs small gang pvp, especially when you consider that even at 25% armor you have about 80k ehp left for them to chew through. without that much armor it's difficult to de-agro in a buffer setup
and no, it's difficult to get the same on any other faction bs, because it's not just about raw armor hp. with a faction or better eanm and deadspace anp, you actually get pretty decent resists in addition to a stupid amount of hp, so you really need all 8 lows for that setup to work

Thing with mega is that it can have nice buffer with very good damage, something navy apoc with identical slot layout can't. Armor tanked fleet pest is rather crappy in both ways, and still only mediocre in ways of damage even with shield tank and 3 gyros, while navy raven is awesome but obviously too different to compare directly.
So my point is that navy megathron is an awesome ship that allows for very good damage and tank at the same time, probably best mix as far as close range is concerned from any other navy BS, with possible exception of raven. Because of this I'd fly it if I had the skills - I can't really make apoc or pest do the same. I COULD achieve silly amount of buffer on both of these if I wanted, but since I don't see practical use of that in 9 out of 10 situations that I usually run into (except baiting), I'm unwilling to do it. You can accuse me of being EFT warrior here since I never flew a mega, but every time so far my eftish theorycrafting proved quite accurate when tested in "real". This is probably the reason for it's popularity over navy pests and apocs, which are rarely seen in pvp.
Also, abaddon is better for straightforward tanking especially with RRing involved, had several instances where entire numerically superior gangs were wiped out and I was still alive, being first to be shot at. So using a 450-500 mil ship for same or similar role seems like a waste to me, although it would obviously do good there as well, but so would others.
Anyway I like to talk a lot when fits and theory are in question so I'll stop now, as too late as it might be. 
P.S. darknesss should be told 2nd eanm > 5th plate.

It's not particularly clear what you meant, but if its the 5 plate navy mega, his last loss has 5 plates, eanm, dc and mag stabs in lows. If it's something else please feel free to explain it to me so I understand it better. I'm quite new and inexperienced in the field of fighting other players so I might need help from one as experienced as yourself.

Now check the last one. Reading what I said might help. Than again it's hard being a fanboy, I know from personal experience.
So argument here is following: I say navy mega is great ship, you say so too. I say it's because of good dmg and tank potential, you say it's because you can fit 5 plates and get 100k armor with HG slaves. You can get 92k armor using same aproach on normal megathron. But you'll never get 250k ehp on it with 3 mag stabs. Do you understand me now?

no, putting 3 mag stabs on a thron means you have to sacrifice something
i never fly a bs without a dcu, and a thron without 2 eanms isn't really a thron, so then you have one slot left for a rep or a plate neither of which makes a solid tank

Exactly. And navy mega has 8th low slot right? So... 2 plates, 2 faction eanms, dc, 3 mag stabs + slaves + gang armor amount bonus equals very large buffer + 1300 dps. My point you see. In that way navy mega is vastly superior to similarly fitted normal one, that will remain much thinner even when dropping down to 2 mag stabs.
You can of course go for monster tank, but in that case you won't get much more than you'd get from normal mega, since using more slots for same effect, such as slapping plates or eanms, has diminishing influence on ship's performance due to the fact each plate will increase HP by fixed amount over ever bigger base and eanms are stacking penalized. You'll get about 30-40% more tank and equal dmg, while in gank case you'll get double the tank, bit more or less depending on if the plain mega we're comparing to has 2 or 3 mag stabs. If it has 2 you'll also get 10ish % more dps.
I'd go for the second option any day tbh. Monster tank will always have it's uses but for every day work I prefer melting stuff.

no, i was gonna post a rebuttal but then i figured you'd probably just reply to it with a lot of tildes and some wannabe goon troll attempt so i skipped a step
dcu2 and 2x eanm2 -> 102 cpu
dcu2, eanm2, deadspace anp -> 62 cpu
iffa, 2x eanm2 -> 89 cpu
so, smartass comments aside, replacing an eanm2 with a deadspace anp is a better cpu savings than replacing a dcu2 with an iffa and you lose less resists aswell so i guess you didn't want to win this imaginary internet spaceships argument anyway
